At least two, perhaps even three of those points may well fit the behaviour of the US at this point in time. Are you saying that the US cannot produce scientific results?
As a developer for a few large corps, I sign a lot of NDAs. Since these NDAs (and the code of conduct within my won company) requires me to encrypt all data traffic (email, FTP, p2p, what have you) between myself and our customers, this provides a contradiction for me. On one hand, I could be branded a terrorist for not allowing the government access to my encryption keys. On the other hand, I could be fired and prosecuted for breach of contract by my company (or our customers) if I do.
I beg to differ. If you use XP or 2000 and say that "windows is stable", you've never really used windows for anything more serious than creating fancy powerpoint presentations.
Really? I have the opposite picture of Sweden in that regard. An example: As I recall, it was not long ago (~1 year) that it was a crime to even posses a short-range (10m) FM transmitter without authorisation from the government. You can still not modify/build FM transmitters to go beyond the 10m radius without authorisation. If you do, there may be a hefty fine waiting...
My guess is, European authorities are just as restrictive in allowing us to "do whatever we want with our own hardware" as the US is.
I still think we have more freedom than the US in other areas, but that's a different story...
My previous employer (one of the GC partners above) has been pushing open source to be used within the company. I joined this effort thinking it could bring more focus on open formats, but I saw a while ago that this attitude did not seem to apply to top management, so I left the company. I hope others join me in doing so.
Actually, I think that a lot of people around the world actually do hate the American people. After all, they voted the same people into government twice, so they must like what they do, right?
OTOH, I know a few americans, and they all voted against the current administration (and they all hate it, for the record). Too bad they're a minority.
The Government was running out of money. The Gov't is always out of money. Not just in the US. Wonder why that is...
The people had to pay up to a third of their money in taxes. Currently, my income tax alone is 32%. I do not live in the US. The sales tax in my country is 25% (we have lots of other funny taxes, like the alcohol tax which is >200% and the petrol tax which is about 150%). Quit whining!
The rich were given grants of money and land. This is probably true in many other countries besides the US.
There was not enough money to pay for the army. Again, this is true for more countries besides the US.
Well, at least the Vandals didn't fly a jet plane into the colosseum. Well, you certainly showed those pesky Iraqis never to do that again. Er...
We end up with a executive who doesn't represent the people. No executive ever represents the people.
Do I see parallels between the roman empire and the US? Yes, they were both big and intimidating (not much else). Do I think you're overreacting? Yes.

Too much work. Wouldn't it be easier to move to another country altogether?
Tell them to get bent, go to jail for a year as a symbol of government run rampant
Wouldn't this be like "Tell them to get bent, go to to be tortured for x number or years"?
I beg to differ. If you use XP or 2000 and say that "windows is stable", you've never really used windows for anything more serious than creating fancy powerpoint presentations.
Lets keep our own house in order so when we go to clean up someone elses house we don't look like fools.
It's a little late for that...
What went wrong with the USofA?
Bush?
Or, it could lead to easier and more reliable install techniques.
Perhaps now, someone in the US will actually catch an actual terrorist (not).
Hmmm. This sounds familiar. Anyone remember the Fast Ethernet vs. 100VG fight?
The Russians are saying the that the Americans did, the Americans are saying that the Russians did it.
Who quit the ABM treaty first? Besides, I've not seen the russians invade soverign countries lately...
I thought it said "OpenSolaris Will Change Linux" first. But then again, that may also be true.

Our propellers are more advanced than the other guy's.
They are.
You know this how exactly?
Better yet, I resigned from the company.

because hitting an innocent person is absolutely unacceptable
Unless, of course, you're referring to officers in the USofA...
I believe this is the same problem that came up when it was time to upgrade to XP and NT. Guess some people never learn...
England was a pretty advanced country at that time
Advanced in stupidity?
There is a saying in some countries: "Where they burn books, they soon burn people."
One more reason not to travel to Kansas City, I guess.
Of course it isn't!
The USA has the best legal system money can buy.

Most apps under windows can run on 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista!
Damn porn filter at work.
This seems a pretty useless question to ask on slashdot...
