I know I'll probably be modded down as flamebait for promoting alternative window managers in a KDE message thread, but I think it might be a good time for the every day user to take a look at how bearded terminal hackers are making things more efficient. Many "LINUX power users" are making their every day work more efficient by using and developing great window managers such as EvilWM,
I used to think like that and be religious about using icewm, eventhough I had a powerful machine.
Then one day I gave KDE a try. It only took me 10 min to set up my desktop, I got nicer results, and some nice frills.
It was one thing to starve stem cell research when it was just a possibility.
Now that there is something tangible that can make the lame walk again he is going to have to look paralyzed people, their loved ones, and their friends in the eye and tell them that he will not allow them to have that second chance
In the last month I did some work on my PC and since there was a Best Buy near my job I went there about 3 times looking for what I thought would be some boiler plate items.
All three times they didn't have any of them.
Of the parts they did have they had only one choice in brands.
The stuff mentioned in the article I am not sure how I feel about, but I know I will not be shopping at Best Buy again.
It has literally been a waste of my time to go there.
It seems like their merchandise is more befitting of a circuit city.
I'm looking for a computer/computer accessories/parts emporium.
Thankfully I live within a medium drive of microcenter
After reading comments that indicate that your installed extensions will show up as incompatible with RC1, I think I'll wait. Apparently the browser has to automatically consider extensions as incompatible until authors check them or something along those lines.
Ditto. I feel the same way
It is too much of a nuisance to trash your plugin set up everytime a decimal release comes out.
You spoke your mind - and some idiot marked you as a troll. Looks like some kiddies are getting modding points again.
The person who moderated me down may not have been a child.
The IT field has religion. A few people escape getting it, but most people have some, including me. Some have it worse then others. Some get it to the point where they become outwardly childish.
They deal with opinions they don't like by telling the other person "you're a bad man!" much the way a toddler would deal with a person they find threatening.......the adult and slashdot upgrade to this way of thinking is to call someone "a troll".
I'm sure the mod is a decent person otherwise.
Like I said, most of us have some IT religion, the difference is that others have more balance in their lives to keep things in perspective such that they don't get emotionally offended over a piece of software.
How do you deal with software updates if your line is too slow to get the source/binaries in the first place?
It isn't a problem.
If it is something like a browser, or a new jvm I just go have dinner.
Things become a problem with larger, less frequent ( hence no justification for a high speed connectiion ) issues like downloading an entire desktop or upgrading an entire installation.
Actually, it's just the install CD that is gnome only. Once installed, you can use apt to get and install KDE, XFCE, IceWm or whatever your fancy would be.
I'm on dialup so I am not really into the "download it yourself after install" path.
I would rather just make the arrangements to get what I need on CD at one time.
I wish the OS community stopped working on the assumption that everyone has a high speed connection. My only justification for getting one would be to download OS software. If I did that I would end up paying more money then just buying an operating system from the store.
Everytime a story is posted about Debian various slashdotter will:
- complain about how infrequent updates come
- how unfriendly the install process is
- how many ass holes are in the debian community.
All of these things are true, and I don't use Debian for these reasons, though I would like to for other reasons.
Debain is about stability above all else, they make the distro for their own tastes, and they are about using only free software.
To be fair, they live up to all of these things.
They don't pay many of their employees living wages either. Many of their employees subsist partially on some form of public assistance.....your tax dollars.
BTW, telling someone to learn a new skill is great, but what if your skill gets outsourced?
How many times does a person have to go back to school?
Who pays? Most individuals can't afford to.
Sooner or later the goverment would get involved and assuming that other externalities would allow someone to retrain everytime another profession gets outsourced you would end up with the situation of your tax dollars underwriting corporate profits.
Wow it isn't like the ethical concerns of stem cell research or cloning individually are tough enough.
Harvard researchers are combinign the ethical difficulties.
Who knows? Maybe if they can come up with a good process to clone stem cells it can shut both ethics debates down.
They can just grow all the stem cells they want negating the need for medical cloning or the need for getting embryos involved.
There are always companies whining about how they would make more stuff for linux but they are scared away by their being too many libraries, environments etc and not one standard to program to.
There should be one dominant linux desktop project with everyone throwing in their efforts to compete against proprietary desktops instead of competing against each other.

I'm sorry but I don't see why this is such a surprise. If you're a multinational company and you set-up office in the United Kingdom then you have to adhere to European and UK law and if you set-up office in Turkey you have to adhere to Turkish
law. So what's the problem with adhering to Chinese law if you set up office in China?
[/blockquote]
No offense to the original poster.
I think this illustrates an issue I have been seeing a lot.
People live to the letter of the law with freedom instead of living to the spirit of the law.
If someone says something they don't like or if it is too inconvenient they are happy to rationalize their actions/inactions by pointing out they are still inside of the lines.
As of the time I am reading this thread all of the score 5 postings are jokes about the AOL layoffs.
Being a programmer my reactions was "there but for the grace of whatever go I". Especially since I live in the DC Metro area.
Then one day I gave KDE a try. It only took me 10 min to set up my desktop, I got nicer results, and some nice frills.
I have been a KDE convertee since then.
Ditto.
It would be a wonderful thing for everyone at a technical level.
It would also be inspiring to see the cooperation adn the elimination of redundant work.
It would be cool if mozilla/firefox could be themed by the KDE, but I guess you pretty much get that with konqueror using gecko.
It was one thing to starve stem cell research when it was just a possibility.

...for distributing Microsoft Source Code.
That is one of the biggest causes of viruses and technical failures around. He is just spreading it!
I found the nicknames that Best Buy staff gives to customers quite degrading.
Anyone for coming up with nicknames for Best Buy and the type of staff they have there?
- the showroom guy who couldn't answer a tech question to save his life or answers them obviously wrong?
- the cashier who can barely speak English?
- the 300 low IQ twit who acts as their walmart greeter?
- the IT fuckup who can't get a real job?

Open Source Politics?
Really?
I thought the term "open source" was invented to get away from the political link from the "free software movement".
Interesting.
What the hell? There are two desktops for linux, why not two geek based political movements.
I love TB ( and FF ) but I will not upgrade until features are added that I absolutely must have.
It used to be that upgrading either of these wouldn't effect my plugins, but these days I have to redo all of my plugins after each install.
A major pain,... I will wait until a "must have" new feature comes out.
Steve
I already used my dot.com's business plan for toilet paper.

Single CD distros are not a problem for me.
I mostly use my PC at home as a desktop and the stuff they include takes care of my needs.
Everyone once in a while I want to check something out and that is where it becomes a pain.
If something is an ISO on a server it is not a problem as it is easy for me to have someone download and burn it for me.
However, when it is not in a convenient ISO it becomes much harder to ask people to lend me their time or their resources.
I would rather just make the arrangements to get what I need on CD at one time.

the said the distro was gnome only.
I recently converted to the KDE after being a die hard icewm user.
I've read so many comments on slashdot about what a pain in the ass Gnome is.
If I want to futz, I will go back to icewm.
from the distro that time forgot

Spoken like a person who probably has health care and a job were they are paid more then peanuts

If Walmart wins will that pass the savings on to the consumer or do something for their horribly treated workers like give them health care?
Probably neither, why should we care.
Just two big behemoths fighting over a scrap of plunder
It is a waste having two *nix desktops.

Wow, this measure will really help boost "sales" on linux!
:)
I had no idea the open source movement had insiders working for them at Microsoft.
How cool is that?
