The IT jobs in America that we read about being lost are lost due to companies like MS and IBM outsourcing their IT positions to India.
However, Free(dom)/Open Source Software may truly be interfering with these companies by taking away market share in these developing countries.
In short, some obscenely rich CEOs/Corporate Types/Investors who put put 100's/1000's of American famlies out of work may make a few less shekels in their moutains of profits.
Cry me a river.......

Konqueror ( the web browser for the K Desktop Environment (KDE) for Gnu/Linux ) is integrated into the desktop....which is not as severe as being surgically grafted into the operating system, as is with microsoft windows.
However, I wonder if having Konqueror sewn into the KDE opens up Konqueror/The KDE to similar issues as ms windows/Internet Explorer have being joined at the hip?
1. Shoot Rick Berman in the face with a nuke cannon.
2. Bring back Gates McFadden. Irish people rock.
3. Bring back Patrick Stewart. Bald english people rock.
4. Bring back Jeri Ryan. Walking plot-elements rock, occasionally.
5. Bring back Leonard Nimoy. It's only logical.
6. Bring back whoever the hell played Kira in DS9. We need aggresive people who dont mind kicking ass.
7. Bring back whoever played Worf. Same thing as Kira.
8. Elimate time travel. Blame Q. Then elimate Q as well, blame time travel.
9. Make the Borg kick ass again.
10. More action. If I wanted advice on parenting, decisions, whatever, I'd visit my mother. Stop talking and kill those idiots.
11. Bring Garibaldi and Marcus Cole from B5 into the series. They are awesome. Ivanova would be nice too, but she and Kira would likely kill eachother within five minutes.
12. Leave the script to Mel Brooks.
Draft #2
1. Fallout is bad. Murder is unethical. Whip Berman in public in Beverly Hills as an example to other producers. Don't stop until his back is raw. Then fire him. Then make him knock on the door of every true sci-fi fan in Norther America and beg for their forgiveness.
2. Leave Gates McFaden at home. She was a boring, her character was boring.
3. Bring back Patric Stewart, but lets be honest and make him a British Starship Captain. Do the usual contrived plot to undo the thing stupid thing of his character french when belize fries are more french then he will ever be.
4. Jeri Ryan....approved.
5. Leanord Nimoy....approved
6. Agreed. Bring back Kira, but the evil one from the alternate universe. Looked good in spandex and had a lot more personality.
7. Michael Dorn.....approved.
8. Losing time travel as a plot element....approved.
9. Borg.....approved.
10. More action.......approved.
11. I like pizza, I like ice cream, but not together. Leave B-5 & Mel Brooks out.
12. Forever ban the use of the holodeck as a story line.
13. Forever ban the use of "Earth like" planets as a story line.
14. Forget dream sequences too.
15. All new alien races/cultures must have more creativity used in forming them beyond putting some silly putty on an actors nose or forehead.
16. No proselytizing. It is didactic and dull. Stop trying to teach morals through Star Trek. Declare a 5 year moratorium on mentioning the prime directive. Let the characters be human, the way DS-9 & Enterprise were when they first started.
The Matrix had two sequels. The first one was mostly alright and would have been redeemed as completely alright if the second sequel wasn't such a bomb.
If anybody's actually read this far, I'd add that my goal in this column was to try to assess these three releases not as a Linux expert might find them, but as somebody moving from Windows might find them. I.e., the vast bulk of the potential user base.
A point that a large sector of the *nix community refuses to accept, even to the point of not seeing it at all.
While we slashdotters might enjoy futzing, most users do not.
The usual reply to this idea is to "sour grape" the user base as having something wrong with them.
However the fact is everyone who builds software is gratified to hear that people use and like their software.
The comments that you read over and over again about Debian are:
1. It is the slowest distro to crank out new releases.
2. It is the slowest distro to crank out new releases because of an emphasis on quality.
#2 is GREAT and is all the justification that is needed, but it does it have to be that way?
If the Debian project had more eyes/bodies could they crank out releases faster?
Could they crank releases less slowly if they reorganized the way did things?
Could they crank out releases faster by find a way to sacrafice a trivial degree of qualtiy for a significant improvement in speeding up their release cycles?
If Michael Moore hadn't used his brains to outwit the film industry this film wouldn't have been seen by anyone in the general public to begin with.
Now they are whining about downloads cutting into business when the film made back all of the costs in the first few and Michael Moore himself approves of people downloading it?
I don't mean this as a flame, but whenever I have come to like software with the MS label on it I end up learning that MS bought it and integrated it rather then developing it on their own.
After reading the book BREAKING WINDOWS a few years back I came to the conclusion that a lack of really nice software actually developed at MS was a result of business personnel hamstringing the developers.
To be fair, business people also contribute to the quality of software as some of them are closer to the people and can prevent the developers from making decisions for the software that will render it hideous for the user.
Its off topic, politically incorrect, and potentially offensive, but Ximian Gnome really needs a new label.
The current logo looks like some sort creature out of christian mythology getting in postion to prep himself for some "alternative romatic activities".
I think the reverse dirt art idea is great, but in this case I am on the side of the "no votes".
He used his new art form to put up free spam/advertisements.....and.....for liquor companies.
If a site tells you that you cannot use firefox to access their site try:
http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/userag en tswitcher/
Then send an email to the site, politely informing them of the existence of: http://www.w3.org/
Lastly, if you are a paying customer, politely remind them of that. Tell them that their organization using non standard technology and excluding you does not build customer confidence.
"However, what I haven't seen was coverage on Slashdot, about the movie's opening day."
You didn't see the opening day of Fahrenheit 911 covered on Slashdot because the topics of Slashdot are IT, engineering, and science,...not politics.
Please do not get me wrong. I saw the film on opening day and I thought it was a fantastic film. I plan to vote against Bush in November.
However, I have been disgusted with the deterioration of the quality of moderation on this site.
The job of a moderator is to help make sure that messages posted to Slashdot are on topic, polite, and not intentionally incendiary.
Instead the moderators are rewarding messages that agree with their biases and marking down/rejecting messages that offend their personal prejudices without regard to the other criteria for moderating messages.
I mean no offense to anyone but I see doing that as immature and narrow minded.
It also threatens the quality of the content on Slashdot, which if the current trend in moderation continues will only be marginally better then quality of the content in usenet.
Like a popular joke, the common ad hominem criticisms of someone else's spelling/grammar/writing mistakes are getting old and over used.
It may have been funny at one point.
It may have even been a cheap way for the critic to make himself or herself look scholarly at one point.
Now, such criticisms are just old and boring.
If anything they make the critic look like s/he doesn't have anything intelligent to say about the content of the message at the best and at the worst it makes them look mean/adolescent.
If a person does not have anything to say about the meaning of a message or if they desire to make themselves appear to be more intelligent they would be better served by reading something on the topic of the message rather than dissing someone else with some cheap tactic.
No offense to anyone and I am not addressing anyone in particular
This book came out in the late 50's/early 60's. Its brief, its effective and every time management book since then has been a nod to it.
Of course as someone else mentioned no time management method works unless you stick with it, but this book even has a few chapters of advice in that area for the willing.
Once you got the method and motivation the medium is not all that relevant.
Recycled Dilbert calendars will do as much for as the most luxurious pda or expensive software.
I am a big Gnu/Linux/X windows (GLX) fan.
However, it is not a revoloution until their market share breaks double digits.
Steve
FWIW
Mephis/KDE is about as refined and as easy as a Gnu/Linux/X windows __desktop___ focused distro gets:

Just be braced for some assholes in their support forums.

It can act as a means of disposal for the mob.
Have you been to your local corporate bookstore lately( ie Barnes & Noble, Borders... )?
They resemble the multiplexes.
Steep prices for what was originally a cheap venue.
Just as Hollywood ony has about 4 different movies that they recycle into "new" movies every season so it seems with these bookstores.
You see many of the "same" books reappearing again and again.

The Star Trek franchise : movies, spinoffs etc has been beaten to death.
I was, I am, a fan, but I enough is enough.
Unless the critics **RAVE** about this film I think I will wait for it to come out on DVD.
Steve
New "Groups" ( mailing lists) made for "Google Groups" ( now usenet + their home grown exclusive mailing lists ) supplanting usenet groups?
It doesn't sound likely.
Steve
Cmr Taco, we work for the entertainment industry.
We have read your sarcasm and we are putting your name down in our permannet record.
You better watch out.

Sounds like a juicy target for terrorists.
Engineering problems may go away, but terrorism as a form of warfare may not.

Now the truly paranoid can come home from work and relax by taking their foil hats off - unless - the material used to make the wall paper is fault.
Heh, this whole story is probably fictitious. A plot from the government to get citizens who are on to them to let down their good.
Phew, almost got suckered in.
