Furthermore.......when you bother to mention something this if you make a typo people will focus on making fun of you about that instead of being effected by what you said about the issues.

Natural forest fires since there were forests and the planet has remained full of forests.
However in under 2 centures with industrialzation & consumerism many forests have vanished( & vanishing ) from people wanting things "that only take a little bit of the wood".
A religious movie comes out where the producer makes up scenes that inspire bigotry and the movie is about two hours of nothing about a man being beaten to a pulp.
CVS airs the superbowl, refuses to take a commercial asking people to vote for someone other then bush, but they gladly take pro bush commercials.
No one complains.......hardly
The majority of the 6 plus billion people on this planet have breasts and those who don't have seen them.
A woman's nipple is exposed on television and the earth in the United States is shaken!
- 40 lbs of junk snail mail ( about the equivalent
of a box of computer printer paper ) for every
man, woman, and child are thrown away each year
- movie theaters are now showing television
commercials
- google is going to read email to target
advertising
- all sorts of businesses AND US governments
redistributing personal information without
permission.
Now this, where does it stop?
When does the right of a business to make the maximum possible profit ( not stated in the constitution ) __stop__ and the rights of citizens to their privacy ( stated in the constitution ) begin?
The SciFi channel - canceled Farscape despite high ratings
- canceled The Invisible Man despite high ratings
- got rid of just about every original sci-fi show
they did
- stopped rerunning very old, interesting sci-fi
reruns they could have rerun
- did not rerun many sci-fi movies when I had
cable
- reran a bunch of stuff that had nothing to do
with science fiction
In short the sci-fi channel stopped being the sci-fi channel and stopped caring what their viewers wanted.
I wonder if the bill to let cable users pay by channel has inspired the Sci-Fi channel to consider what their viewers ( now *their* __customers ) want.
The vi vs emacs question is irrelevant to everyone but developers, and then only a small group of developers. For simple system editing you don't need to have either on your system:

Since the concerns of these goverments are for everyday users their concerns will be for ease of use and so far KDE is ahead if for nothing else its similarity to windows.
Agreed. How do you expect to change that though? Debian is, by nature, a very open project, and as such places like debian-user and #debian are relatively unmoderated. Do you want to close off the lists somehow? Do you want to moderate them? Who do you propose to do the job? And by what guidelines? And by what mechanism? These are serious questions, and they don't have easy answers. "Fixing" a community isn't easy
Every group has leaders that everyone respects, event the cranks.
If these people visibly made the point that the Debian community is not about being rude to people the cranks would follow.
That is not to say that everyone would be perfect all of the time, but the problem would be reduced.
C++ is probably out as a choice to migrate gnome into.
A desktop written in C++? What would be the point, KDE is already doing it.
Steve
I have a really stupid question to ask. Are the people who control Gnome even considering moving it to a new language? Steve
A lot of people have already made the EXCELLENT point how it would be smarter to choose a language already known by many people.
I agree.
Legislating an offical language will not make people learn that language.
Look at GNU. They made Scheme the "official scripting language" for GNU/free(dom) software.
How many people do you see falling over themselves to learn LISP?
Learning a language......and keeping it learned...takes a significant investment in time.
Many of us have day jobs, famlies, lives etc.
Why not do GNU/Gnome and the developers they want to attract a favor?
Make the official language something would be developers can reap a double return on their educational/time investments?
Make it a language they can take back with them to their jobs.
Steve
Thanks for mentioning the STL. I had a friend say a few things about it as well.
When I finally get back to my C/C++ roots I will check it out.
One thing that does concern me is that I always here this comment that the GNU compiler is "optimized" for C.
What does that mean and why don't they support C++ ?
Steve
Computers may be the center of our world, but it isn't that way for the majority of people.
The way to get ordinary people to care is to give them software that they love.
They might write letters to their US Representatives on behalf of free(dom) software if something like Gaim or Firbird is threatened.
They will not write letters to their US Representatives on behalf of free(dom) software if something like emacs or mutt is threatened.
Steve

A disease of warped priorities

The forrests of the world have been and are being further depleted.
Do we really need cosmetic veneers for PCs made out of exotic woods?

They haven't been able to kill downloadable music by direct means, maybe this is their method.
Price it out of the market so their business goes down, whine about "pirates destroying the music industry", and get sympathy for more draconian laws
Steve
Raise the price to download a song to be $2.49,
Produce crappy sterile corporate "art" no one wants,
Blame pirates when your business plummets from lack of sales

I have heard and read several high profile tax experts voice the opinion that the flat tax is a pipe dream
In a nutshell: members of the house and senate ( & even the president ) use tax distribution as leverage in election years.
Besides think of all the foriegners who H&R block outsource too who will be out of work if doing tax returns becomes simple.
don't choose "firebird" I think they will be okay
You aren't supposed to mod articles where you participate in the commentary for those articles.
I loved this series, but I had to admit, that towards the end the show seemed to be running out of gas.
:)
Maybe it is better staying canceled, especially after the long amount of time that has passed.
Can the actors, writer, producers recreate the feel, look, atmosphere of the characters/show etc after all of this time?
I have seen to many failed revivals ( battlestar galactica comes to mind ).
I would rather let it sit, as is, as a work of art then bring it back to malign it.
OTOH, I also hope they try. I don't watch television anymore, but if the miniseries is half way decent I would pay to pick it up on DVD
Interesting.

Yes, someone will make the comment that competition is good for improving quality.
This is true.
However if the KDE & Gnome projects could pool their resources they could compete against the ms windows desktop instead of with each other.
Steve
There is already Lindows.....which must have an XP and then there is the KDE.
