  2. Finale is fine on Apple Unveils New Pro Products · · Score: 1

Finale is one of the few apps that I know very well. I was shocked once to find that some archane method I came up with of changing the note value/time signature relationship was the offical method listed in the manual. I guess I think like Finale is programmed.

Finale works fine. It gets the job done. I can work very quickly with it.

It's a little weird getting started, but the important thing is that there isn't anything Finale can't do, that you can't think of. You can do all sorts of weird modern notation, and it's all pretty quick and easy. By easy I mean - once you start to think like the program, you'll be fine.

You don't hear people bitching that After Effects is too complicated... so why all this Finale nonsense? Learn how to use the software, it works fine.

Apple is LOSING MY MONEY because of content resolution.

I would have been happy to support LOST by buying episodes through the iTMS - even though they're more expensive than the DVD and have no special features - but if and only if the they come in the same widescreen format and resolution that I can get from.. :cough: other sources.

I'm standing here waving my money in the air and - no one's selling what I want to buy.

The same situation goes for the music store - the new album by The Bad Plus is available, however it's only available in compressed AAC. I want the best quality - I actually want it in DVD-Audio. My other option is a copy protected "CD" that I refuse to purchase. Blah.

Combine an old school phone that does ONLY phone stuff (I suppose it techincally has games - I've never played them. the interface is clean and phone centric) with modern batteries and you have one very useful piece of tech.

The display is nice easy to read text.

It's great! Tracfone uses the cingular network so you should have good coverage.

This costs me far less than any other cell phone "plan."

  23. professional educator won't public school children on How Can Tech Help Fight Education Costs? · · Score: 1

I'm a professional educator. I give classes in public schools for a living.

But, I would never let someone I care about attend public schools in their current state.

    Why, you ask?

Because in public school, children do not get to make meaningful decisions. Sure, they can decide if they will follow the rules or not - but that is not really a meaningful decision. A meaningful decision is chosing how to spend your time. The world is so full of knowledge that it is impossible to know everything. So, some amount of specialization is important.

Allowing children to make meaningful choices (not just which test to take, the hard one or the easy one? or to do homework, or not?) takes some guts. You have to step back and let children make mistakes. This is hard. We want to "save them." But the power to choose leads to this self confidence, self reliance, self TRUST - that is impossible to gain any other way. It's not something you can make up for later in life.

People throw around the word "learning" like they throw around the word "technology." Technology is ANY TOOL - not just microchips. And learning is any experience, not just memorization. Factual knowledge is a commodity. Being happy with and trusting yourself, and helping other people are truely valuable skills.

Learning happens all the time in everything you do. People are naturally curious!

The problem with allowing children to choose how to spend their time is that they are growing up into a highly scheduled rat race of a society. This is a tough transition. But the challenge is worth it for happier, smarter people.

Home schooling isn't about sitting at home being lectured by parents. It's about experiencing the world around you, and taking advantage of all of life's opportunites. It's about letting children choose how to spend their time, and letting them make mistakes, and learn from them. Keyword: let.

    Just some of my thoughts...

  24. note taking in class? on The Future of Technology in Schools · · Score: 1

WHY are we still taking classes that are based around memorizing facts? (Music History - huge culprit!)

Factual knowledge is a commodity. The magic is in comprehension. Why did I pay some old guy over $100/hour to write things on the board which I then memorize, and write back to him on a test from memory?

Class needs to be about comprehension, about compromise, about learning how to solve problems and live with other people, and about living with unanswered problems.

Classes should be mostly project and discussion based, and sometimes lecture based. In all events, the class should be scripted for me (for $100/hour/student, it shouldn't be a big hardship) so that we all have a searchable record to refer to of our meetings.

I am very disappointed by what I found in what I thought was a good university. I have a feeling most universities aren't terribly different.

Powerpoint is just on a the surface of a much deeper problem.
