I'd rather google just by generous enough to donate money to the Wiki project rather than buy them out. We all saw what happened when google bought youtube. Youtube sucks now. It's copyright infringement take down notice frenzy over there. Once there's money behind something... they start coming for you no matter what.
Think of all the wiki's about games or tv shows or whatever that have pictures etc. I just see it as a problem. Once there's money, some fucking lawyer from some fucking corporation is going to want to pressure wiki to do things as they see it, or else.
Google or someone else with money like BILL FUCKING GATES should donate money to wiki to keep them afloat. It's a nice public service created by the public with good intentions for all.
It would be a shame to see it go the way of corporate buy out or internet advertising and so forth.
Maybe Gates wont donate money cause Microsoft wants to do something similar.... Same for google... but inject ads all over the fucking place. See why Wiki needs to stay ad free? Remember the Do no evil Google statement? Youtube blows. They over censor, you can see violence but not tits, you can type "go suck my dick" in a comment, but you cant show it. You cant post anything as a public video that contains a clip from some tv shwo or anything without being taken down.
I just see it as a nightmare situation and another win for old corporate America if Wiki goes this route. In some respects, i'd rather see them just end Wiki rather than sell out to the sleeze.
Where the fuck do we get off, thinking our laws, or even our copyrights apply in other foreign countries? They are sovereign nations that have their own laws. The are not us, and we do not control them. STOP ACTING LIKE WE RUN THE FUCKIGN PLANET AMERICA.
Yeah but the problem is, every Jill and Joe American as you put it, is of no importance or value in our country anymore. They are consumers. They are not people worth listening to, or allowing to voice their opinions. They have no influence what so ever.
But Steve Jobs... Now there is an important human being of god like status. He has lots and lots of money and he's successful, so when he talks.. people listen.
When Jill and Joe American, talk... no one thinks their of any importance because what have they acheived in life? A modest home, maybe a child or two, living pay check to pay check without health care... What in the world would they have to say of any importance or relavance?
i'm the OP, and i'm also a CGI artist. (3d animator and director) It is certainly true that CGI is expensivo:) Most shops work from project to project and can barely afford the cost of all of the hardware that needs to be constantly upgraded along with software, and the large number of extremely talented artists...
There are very high costs in CGI because you're asking someone to always be at the forefront of technology and artistry. People change seats often because new talent have adapted to newer techniques while you were still finishing up your project. In other words, your team didnt have time to "learn" they had to work with what thye know... mean while new techniques are being developed...
Its a crazy cycle that costs lots and lots of money. Most cg shops close if they dont have their next project lined up. Its not a good buisness to go into unless you have lots of high profile clients, or are a very small team of artists. It's just so expensive to maintain a cg company.
The worst part is that clients still think you push a fucking button to make Jar Jar fart. It's still that bad:)
The problem with CGI is... the talent in these art departments is huge... FAR MORE TALENTED THAN MATT DAMON or BEN AFFLECK, OR ROBERT REDFORD... We're talking about people who can act, sculpt, paint, animate often those talents are found in a single artist at a cg shop. There are some extremely talented people out there making films successful, and they barely get a penny compared to the actors.
Its rather sad. The post production team is an actor these days.... except you have such a large number of people dividing up a budget. Look at the list of post production artists next time you see a film. From character animation down to wireremoval and color corrections.... EVEN DIGITAL MAKEUP RETOUCHING...
I mean its not cheap because of the workload they dump on you... which is always far more than the hassle is worth. You dont make a lot of money, no ones getting rich in the cgi world... and yet you often sleep at the office cause shot s36b-s6-w of spiderman 4000 has to be done by the morning.
Luckily people like doing the work... but shit.. pay up suckers. We make your films:) Or you could just go and have spiderman in a fucking spandex suit hanging from a wire;) Most cg artists love to make this stuff... it would be nice to see them really rewarded... Up keep costs are so fuckign high.
Well there is truth to the statement that a lot of good jobs are in the movie industry and that there are lots of people from construction, lighting, writing, catering etc that all benefit from film production.
The problem is.. Hollywood themselves do not support American film makers. Hollywood at any opportunity will move productions to Canada, and other foreign countries just to cut production costs (cheaper crews)
So Hollywoods own pr is bullshit in many respects. Theres definatly some truth to it though. I do think piracy hurts them... but not as much as they claim. For example I havent gone to the movies much at all this past year... It's not because i've been downloading dvds like a dope addict... cause i havent been. Its because they havent inspired me to get off my ass yet. Spiderman3 i'll go see, theres a few others i'm looking forward to, but overall the way they promote films turns me off. I dont want to really go see a film that i pretty got the story from the commercial. I want to explore films, find ones that are interesting, not be told that this is the funniest film of the year... and have it not be.
Consumers are smarter... thats all. They have more options when it comes to seeing a film and not paying for it... so they need to really be fair with consumers, lowering the ticket prices is a good start.
My friends girl, buys dvds constantly. I mean 200$ at a time. All legal of course. We think shes nuts.... "you can rent them and copy them we exclaim":) But she loves to buy them. I'm a movie nut myself and she outspends me, and i consider her a more casual consumer of films.... cause she buys lots of crap:)
DVD sales have slowed dramatically though. Most analysts will say that the dvd days are done. The sales are bottomed and they're hoping for HD and Bluray to spark that massive dvd like buying trend that took place with dvds.... I dont know if people are that willing to buy another entire library of films they already own... Sure some films... but thats asking a lot form a consumer in a format war.
Its possible that the saving grace to film sales, will be technology... a constant upgrade in technology.... Soon uncompressed 4000x3000 resolution laser displays! Freddy Got Fingered will have never looked better! (i love that movie.. its brillant... i know.. shut up)
Would you still say the same if a different amendment from the Bill of Rights were under attack, or is the second amendment somehow less important to you than the rest? If so, ask yourself why. Dont put words in my mouth, you know that wasnt my point. I'm all for owning firearms and self defence. Read my other responses where i mention that. Your statement is a bit unfair.
I specifically was speaking to gun nuts. Those that are absolutely set on abolishing gun control at the cost of other issues. I beleive every citizen has the right to own a gun, and if that were under attack... I would be worried. It is not. What is happening and has been in effect is gun control. The brady bill etc. There are assualt rifle bans etc. A gun owner/enthusiast is far more knowledgeable than i am on the specific laws... but we're not talking about banning guns.
I'm saying... It would be a shame for someone to base their vote, on the single issue of gun control vs many of the other issues that are more important to a lot more people. I would not support a ban on guns. I would be tolerant of gun control laws as long as they make sense and are fair. Remember laws arent perfect, they try to fix some things, and they break other things unfortunately. I dont want to see guns banned. Thats not the issue we're talking about.
They're not going to ban guns. One may be unhappy with gun control of any kind... but if that is more important than healthcare, education, social security, and economic issues to a person... i think they need to have better priorities
Its like voting for a candiate because he has a personal relationship with god... and does nothing godly in office.
We're going to have pick one of two parties... and chances are, we're not going to agree with atleast one of their policies... but we have to weight them all out, better for worse... even if that means more gun control... or continued gun control... especially if that means improved healthcare, education policies, immigration, world trade, economic policies.
intel and via would have a ways to go to develope hardware on the level of nvidia's and atis. Perhaps intel or via could just buy up the old 3dlabs?
i know its a pipe dream. I'm not a linux zealot, or a mac one actually. I'm just ready for a good change for the better. I'd atleast like to see these two major companies say "NO.. we will not deal with your drm scheme, it is too complex and its hurting us... remove it if you want us to support windows"
The people need some kind of leverage against DRM and the problems it creates for users as well as hardware manufactures... which ultimate is the users problem. Clearly these companies are having serious problems with vista.
i doubt doubt it one bit. I've had this fear that the system has become too complex to be flexible enough for developers. I suggest ATI and Nvidia just pull out of the vista market all together...
Stick with either XP until they force MS to remove the DRM paths and strict driver oversight... or simply push linux has a gaming platform and start developing not only drivers for linux, but also code to improve it as a desktop system.
Politics for now and the forseeable future is going to be best described as a choice of which party is going to do the least damage to society. And the sad part is, it's often hard to tell.
Two things are for certain, especially concerning the dems. The first is that everything they are promising now is extremely destructive and unsustainable were it to be implemented. The second is that they are lying through their teeth about everything they claim to stand for. Also, there's plenty of this crap to spread around to other parties. But you say that as if the Republicans havent screwed up this country... Which is it? Are you saying we should stick with the republicans? What evidence in the last 7 years is any reason to do so? I dont think so. This time, its the other sides chance. Crooked or not, they're not the current fuck up, do nothings that have had absolute power the past 7 years.
Destructive? Sure if it means destorying what the republicans have done, i'm all for it.
The border situation is crap. I dont see how we can realistically patrol the borders and stop the flow of illegals... but i do think we should try. Who will? The Dems or Republicans? I dont know. The Dems supposedly want the hispanic vote, but so do the republicans.... Neither really deal with the situation... so i dont suspect we'll see a mass rounding up of illegals anytime soon. Beleive me, I'd love nothing more than to round up the illegals in this country and ship them home because the damage to our economy is real. Slave labor is illegal in this country.... or so it says on paper. Yet somehow we let this continue because it benefits "small buisnesses" yeah right. So did enslaving blacks. It was wrong then and its wrong now. It's nice the illegals want to come here and work, and better themselves. I welcome them to do so, legally. I dont expect either party to really do anything about it because the truth is, we love slavery and we love exploiting people. I dont but.. well apparently the country does.:(
Its the donkeys or the elephants... We have to consider giving the dems a chance... after all, its really a one party system. There is very little diference between teh two. It's democrats turn... for good or bad.
Since i was the poster who was +5 modded up to... I think you make a good point. He did mention two issues and i picked mostly at the Gun issue, but i did talk about the economics statement to some extent. I put the gun issue up against the economics issue trying to pose the question "which is more important, a Gun or the redistributed economics?" The reason i did that is because the government, republican or not, ALWAYS redistributes our money in some form. We have stereotypical views as to how it gets distributed, the republicans give more to military spending, and the Dem's to social programs, education... We have these stereotypical views but ultimately the government taxes us and redistributes that money, reguardless of the party. So posed the single issue of gun control up against economics in hopes that Gun control wasnt the real issue behind his statement.
The original poster mentioned 2 issues important to him... I'm wrong to single him out as a single issue voter. You make much sense in this, and i would mod you +1 insightful cause i'm adult enough to admit when i'm wrong... besides We're just humans. I'm not perfect but do take what i said under consideration about the economics point. Our government, reguardless of the party in control, will redistribute our money... So i dont quite see his second issue as a "single sided issue" but more of a generalization that both parties do because thats what government does. If he were to mention a specific channel of where the money were going, then i would consider it another issue, but its more of a generalization, where as the gun control issue is more specific.
But i think you're right for pointing it out. And btw of course there is bias.... If there were no bias, we would have no thoughts. Bias is a tricky thing, its a political tool used to empower people against the other people, when in reality, we are all biased one way or the other. It is inhuman to expect unbiased opinions. OBJECTIVE opinions perhaps... but we will always have a bias, sometimes very strong, sometimes not so certain and just a tiny bit...
There is no doubt the Dems have done bad things as well. I just hope that we are not throwing them back out of blind party faith. I mean that sincerely as much as i can without being insulting. I just find it so hard to deal with that when one of us, says one thing, the other has to throw something back at them in their face as matter of fact. It is so true that the Dems are not perfect... This is true.
But we need some balance. Both the Dems and Republicans are corporatist. They represent big buisness before individual citizens. We all know this. The DMCA is proof of it.
The faults are certainly with both parties... You dont have to tell me. I voted for Nader twice. I'm willing to stand up and vote my heart. Michael Badnarick (libertarian party), and David Cobb (green) both had great ideas and i felt were sincere last election.
I'm not a democrat or a republican.... or a green, or a libertarian... I'm independent. Sure i tend to lean libertarian (not the quasi republican conservative slanting libertarian) I consider myself an independent because i dont trust any of them at all. Not one bit.
Never the less.. we have to vote.... The republicans have done a horrible job. The president is a criminal in my eyes, a heartless man, with an even colder vice president beside him. The republican congress has folded over for him these past 2 terms.
I have to give the democrats a chance, as crooked as they are, they werent in power at all the past 7 years. Maybe the horrible damage has fueled them to realize what is at stake? I doubt it but its the shit position we're in. Two choices.. Evil or Evil...
I have to give the Dems a chance because i can not take another 4 years with a republican president.
Now of course it depends on the individuals, that is what mostly counts... not the party, not the bullshit, but what they say and do. But how risky is that? I mean they say what they want, then do somethign else while in power...
This is why i voted for Ralph Nader. I trust the man... I trust that he works hard and cares. I wish it was as easy to just vote for a new party or an independent candidate like Ralph, and take the country back... but our democracy is deeply broken in many ways.
Looking back at the 2000 election. Everything Ralph ran on, that i felt passionate about, has become a major issue in this country. Corporate welfare, health care costs, corruption, privacy rights, media consolidation, first amendment issues, etc. Ralph had very specific descriptions of what is going with our country and things we could do to right them... Far more detailed than i can right 7 years later but I found it histerical that as the years passed... everything Ralph said became true... and the Dems started to adopt his platform, but only in generalizations and shallow political bullshit with no power to do anything if they wanted...
Well perhaps now they get their chance... I fear the Dems are just worthless as the republicans and nothing more than political bullshit...
In the end though... 1 or the other. Our broken democracy gives us 2 choices.
I'd vote for an independent presidential candidate again in a heartbeat.
Hillary defines the word Cunt. If you vote for Cunt... we're going to have a serious problem. She is a spineless weasel that will say anything and do anything but be honest.
She is not credible. Every time i hear her speak, I hear the mars attack "ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK!" She rises to a fake climax with her tone when giving a speech... she has a smile that reads "bullshit" across her teeth.
Dont make the Hillary mistake. She cant win anyways. Obama has a better chance because hes credible and sincere... so far.
Watch them all like a hawk and keep them on a leash.
Which is more important? Buying military grade weapons at walmart on a whim, or lowering health care costs and taking care of people's health, education and repaying the insane debt we're in thanks to the republicans?
When the results of global warming release natures fury, you can shoot at the ocean as it trespasses on your property in Texas.:)
I'm being a little silly but there are more important things than gun control. I hope no one basis their vote on that single issue. There is so much more at stake in our daily lives. If you live for guns and guns alone you have a problem. I beleive in the right to self defend yourself, own a gun etc... but there really are other important issues and we only get two fucking choices unfortunately. Hopefully no one actually does vote based on a single issue... but this country is certainly full of people that do.
Also check out http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html Its a program called Paint.net Its free and may suit your needs. Its a decent free photoediting/painting program.
Very very true... You would think New York of all places would be on red alert if it were a hoax bomb or bomb threat of any kind. Nope, New York didnt care one bit, and none of the other cities did either, except for Boston.
What is the reason now, that we can no longer afford Space exploration? In the past, we've done plenty of space exploration. Why now is it a problem? Why is it that we cant afford to now? The Dow is at its highest, certainly much higher than it ever was when we went to the moon...
Why now?
Where did we go wrong?
Arent we a rich nation? or are we a nation provides the home to a few rich people.
What happened? hmmm...
Nasa cant go to space, and we cant afford healthcare, education.... When we went to the moon, you could have a one job household and own a home...
What happened?
Is anyone even thinking about it? Does anyone really care anymore?
I'm not familiar enough with how many stations CBS owned in the Boston area, but CBS owning multiple stations in a single market is nothing new. In New York they own WFAN, WNEW, WXRK, 1010wins, News880, CBSFM just to name a few off the top of my head. I'm not sure how many they owned in Boston, or if at all what you say is true, because it is quite common for CBS to own almost an entire market of radio stations. Hell there's only CBS and Clearchannel, with a few exceptions.
There are buisness moves behind everything, especially when the Mayor is demanding to have you arrested and your license revoked. If anything, it gave CBS an answer to a tough decision... "which station do we can?" "how about these fucking idiots that just got us in trouble"
I would be as cynical if i had not known of previous Mayor Menino mind fuck events. He's known to be a complete moron who can not speak in public. Think President Bush. He's a very stupid person that panders quite heavily in press conferences... And like Bush jr, he manages to bumble fuck each word of his speach. Its Jibber Jabber with a baseball bat:) (oops thats peanut butter jelly)
Mayor Menio is not a mastermind of marketing... he's a jackass that keeps getting elected. He made a bigger deal of this, than the tunnel collapsing and killing that poor woman.
Lets start with the mayor, Mayor Menino. He's a fucking retard. A blowhole of political mumbo jumbo. Listen to some of his speeches.
Mayor Menino cant take a joke. This is well established, just ask Opie and Anthony on XM sat radio and cbs radio... Who both lost their jobs as a result of saying that the mayor had died on the air during an April fools show. He wanted them fired, arrested, and their stations broadcasting license revoked.
He's doing the same again. As we all know, he has gone as far as to call the Ignignot and Err "Light Bright" displays as "Hoax bombs". A hoax bomb is not a random item left on various buildings. People often leave things around such as backpacks by accident. Are these hoax bombs?
A hoax bomb is something that looks like a bomb. Perhaps toilet paper rolls painted red with a calculator crudely wired to them. That is a hoax bomb.
These were fucking "Light Brights" with artwork on them. No anonymous phone calls to the police saying "look out, we're the mooninites and we're gonna blow the fuck out of your city... we're everywhere!" That would be a hoax bomb situation.
These are billboards.... posters... fucking light brights.
2million isnt a bad deal, considering the histerical free press they received. 70's hair cuts... are so fucking bad ass.
I'm glad they did this. It makes the Mayor of Boston look like a fucking moron. It makes the press look like fucking morons. It makes Adult Swim look funny and politically wise. This country needs a little fucking with. Adult Swim is evidence of it, that many people not only want to create counter culture experiences, but also seek them out because of the current ass twisted state of our society. We need a good fucking with, for our own good.
They weren't hoax bombs... they were silly light brights... and i want one:)
Watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Adult Swim. It's funny and full of random nonsense. These guys are my heros. Not only was it a great idea, but when it became a big stinking "hoax bomb" situation in dumb fuck Boston... It became a good opportunity to make fun of the press and that stupid fucking Mayor Menino.
I'm not a linux naysayer. Infact i keep my eye on it regulary in hopes to escape microsoft. I wish the world would shift focus towards Linux or a new free open sourced OS that promotes the idea of privacy, security, civil rights, etc. I admire Linux for a lot... but I am a professional working in computer graphics and i can not make the switch due to the amount of software that is windows only. There are some programs that i use that are linux. Maya, Softimage XSI... but i can not make the switch because there are other complimenting programs that out number those 2 main apps.
And dont think i havent asked for Linux versions.
I would like the world to move away from MS and towards an OS that is made by the worlds people. I think that is a great and nobel cause. Some are fortunate to move to Linux and have it suit their application needs. Mainly those are people doing networking, or are at home emailing, watching videos, using gaim, and open officing. Linux is ready for those people... Although they are kind of alone in the world when it comes to hardware support, games etc. Linux is a great platform... but it will not win people over until we can get the some more professional apps over to it. It has started, but its such a slow movement unfortunately.
I'm not a linux naysayer or however you spell it:) I'm a realist that keeps tabs on the state of the computing world as it relates to my needs.

I agree. Perhaps the Canadians will stand up for us Americans whos dont have the balls to do so against our dictatorship democracy.
Canada... the real America.

Stick with either XP until they force MS to remove the DRM paths and strict driver oversight... or simply push linux has a gaming platform and start developing not only drivers for linux, but also code to improve it as a desktop system.
I dont but.. well apparently the country does.
:)
When the results of global warming release natures fury, you can shoot at the ocean as it trespasses on your property in Texas.
:)
AFRO party rock
43 year old woman jealous of a hot 30 year old :)
:)
There are buisness moves behind everything, especially when the Mayor is demanding to have you arrested and your license revoked. If anything, it gave CBS an answer to a tough decision... "which station do we can?" "how about these fucking idiots that just got us in trouble"
You fuck up in radio.. UP
I would be as cynical if i had not known of previous Mayor Menino mind fuck events. He's known to be a complete moron who can not speak in public. Think President Bush. He's a very stupid person that panders quite heavily in press conferences... And like Bush jr, he manages to bumble fuck each word of his speach. Its Jibber Jabber with a baseball bat :) (oops thats peanut butter jelly)
:)
They weren't hoax bombs... they were silly light brights... and i want one
Bravo... "and i'm doing this as hard as i can"
I'm not a linux naysayer.
:) I'm a realist that keeps tabs on the state of the computing world as it relates to my needs.
I'm not a linux naysayer or however you spell it
Does it interface with Itunes Store? Does it interface with the Ipod correctly?
Exactly. The wii cant handle Unreal 3's engine. That is why its not coming to Wii.
Ubuntu has very little real world applications such as video editing, graphics, design, print, games, itunes, etc.
I'd like to switch to linux.. but windows offers much more in software apps right now unfortunately.
