The installer didnt care if i used my linksys or dlink. Frankly my linksys WRT64GS couldnt handle the speed, so out it went. The D-Link does have custom firmware from verizon but its not locked to the service in any specific manner. You can use any router that can handle 30/5 service. My linksys could not. It was giving me about 15Mb down.
On broadbandreports there are plenty of people using various routers with FIOS. Verizon just uses the D-link as a standard installation feature because its easier to train the installers to use a single router's ui. And the D-link performs well. So i'm happy with it. My linksys let me down on the other hand:( (even with Open Sourced firmwares)
No the IP doesnt change when you open a new browser window. Its a PPPOE. The Ip stays the same for the most part. It hasnt changed on me much at all. Its the same as cable's dynamic IP. It's not as regular as cable because its PPPOE but its not going to change on while you're playing Half Life2:)
The reps arent exactly up to speed yet, nor are the installers. They dont even have a verizon FIOS home page for users yet. You have to log into their DSL home page. The tech that was at my house said everything is so new, and it keeps changing at Verizon. They've already updated their Fiber ONT's once already before the major roll outs. You asked for an example of ATI's bad opengl drivers. Softimage XSI and ATI (non firegl) have had some issues with opengl drivers. Things drawing completely odd. For example you select a polygon and it ends up selecting a polygons you didnt click on. ATI has fixed that issue but it took them a good deal of time.
I've done tests with ati and nvidia cards in opengl and the nvidias had faster performance in animation playback in viewports in the major 3 3d apps.
Compare ATI's direct 3D Support in 3dsmax, vs Opengl in 3d max and its a world of difference. Opengl crawls incomparison.
Nvidia doesnt seem to have serious issues with opengl.

Does anyone find the Vista UI at all attractive? Its pretty horrible from a color theory point of view. It just looks like a ugly graphics mixed together. It looks rather slopply for a ui.

Think about how lame XP is. How poorly designed it is. How old it is. The dumb html intergration menus which do nothing. The file explorer which is mind numbingly useless when it comes to real file management tasks. The insecure browser, the disrespect of admin/user rights work flows.
XP is terrible.
OSX looks like a fine peice of art and has some great functionality. It makes XP look like a hack job. (maybe thats because it is) Sounds like Vista will be as well.

I'm a 3d animator, and a lot of people i know use the high end gaming versions. The quadros firegls and wildcats etc are all nice but their performance gains are short lived when you factor in the price/performance compared to the highest end gaming card version.
You asked for an example of ATI's bad opengl drivers. Softimage XSI and ATI (non firegl) have had some issues with opengl drivers. Things drawing completely odd. For example you select a polygon and it ends up selecting a polygons you didnt click on. ATI has fixed that issue but it took them a good deal of time.
I've done tests with ati and nvidia cards in opengl and the nvidias had faster performance in animation playback in viewports in the major 3 3d apps.
Compare ATI's direct 3D Support in 3dsmax, vs Opengl in 3d max and its a world of difference. Opengl crawls incomparison.
Nvidia doesnt seem to have serious issues with opengl.
ATI's opengl drivers are flakey on their non firegl line of cards. Some suspect thats by design.
Graphic card makers should get with the program and stop releasing firegl's and quadros. Just release really kick ass 3d accelerators for all.
That way we can all have full opengl support and not the lame opengl game drivers by ATI. Nvidia's gaming card opengl drivers are better than ATIs
