I am glad that this ruling came so quickly after the ruling that ISP's are not required by law to produce the names of people on their networks who are suspected filesharers.
A) Software is becoming more complex, just as hardware is becoming more complex. There will always be bottlenecks, and running bleeding edge software on emulated hardware wont offer the performance of running directly on the hardware.
B) The emulators would have to be written by someone with security in mind, and strict security on the emulators would stifle development. the SOFTWARE needs to be secure, not the platform... the platform is the coders canvas. Imagine if painters had to paint on canvasses that restricted where and how they could paint...
C) Java Virtual Machine is an emulator... a virtual machine is an emulator, and it hasnt solved security problems...
those ads on tv, and the phrase in the article "Stealing Satellite SIGNALS"... Now i may be way off base, but how the heck does one steal a satellite signal? They are beamed to everyone in north america/world... Basically the phrase stealing satellite signals could be applied to someone who has a dish on their roof, but no decoder, since they are collecting the satellite signals.... I mean really, its not stealing the signals, its illegally decoding the signal that the problem...
The cost of hardware may go down, but the VALUE of the hardware does not... The value of the product, to the consumer, increases dramatically as the price of the hardware goes down. This is because you can now afford a better piece of hardware for less money.
Because its always the idiot that gets the podium and the spotlight, and the intelligent people are left in the dark. The worlds greatest minds can write the best pieces of writing and they get mediocre attention at best, but every idiotic piece of poorly researched and presented writing has a better chance of gaining public attention.
Excessive consumption of fast food IS the enemy. It is easy to blame people health problems on fast food companies but when it comes down to it, the problem is really with the mental state of people today. We want everything right now, and we want LOTS of it.
If everyone ate fast food in moderation and got some exercise there wouldnt be any problem. The same goes with drinking, drugs, partying, eating OTHER food, sex, porn.. etc etc etc...
Its all too east to OVERindulge in something that has the perceived benefit of being fast, or makes you feel good. There is a healthy balance, and once people figure this out there wont be a problem anymore. But we dont have to worry about that happening anytime soon.
I personally think we should worry about cutting down on people smoking. More people die annually because of smoking then they do of obiesity. If we can get people to give up smoking, which people have been doing for ages, it should be easy enough to get people to realize the dangers of eating fast foor every day.
Night Vision goggles have built in safety mechanisms that prevent the user (and device) from being damaged by looking at bright light sources while they are turned on. Using an IR light to "blind" someone looking for pirates would only serve to draw attention to yourself and get you kicked out.
IBM is doing that, but indirectly, in supporting Novells development of Suse linux, who in turn supports the Ximian team who produce Ximian desktop which is a windows like Gnome desktop with all the "little"features like windows has
My universities email addresses are random numbers and letters and i get more spam in that account than i do in one based on my nickname... The spammers use randomized emails to send out their payloads, so everyone gets it...
Ive never used my uni email to sign up for anything either.
You need to reinstall whatever loader you use, as windows doesnt care if there was something on the boot sector when it was installed, it just writes over it.
I Did not know about the 10MB limit at the time i made the post, but it still makes little difference in what i said, if you upload a few 10 MB compressed files you will fill up your space more quickly.
Im not saying that the problem is going to be entirely Gmails problem, but alot of people are getting overly excited about using Gmails "1GB" of storage to do backups over email.
Because as i said in my post earlier, google is going to compress the emails, read my earlier post for details.
Also, google doesnt buy 50,000 dollar SAn's for storage, they buy COTS hard drives and stick a few of them into each machine they run, this gives them a ton of cheap, redundant storage.
Just a little follow up, Generally plain text files (Read: emails) will compress 50% or more, and sparse text files can compress up yo 95%. This means that gmail can basically store a users 1 Gb of "email" in between 50 and 500 Mb of raw disk space. Now while this is useful for emails, being plain text and all, you can see how this space will fill up pretty quick when people start duming mpegs and other compressed files onto it.
I Have a feeling everyone who is talking about using gmail for online storage is going to be out in the cold.
I think they may run into problems with the storage when people start emailing themselves huge compressed files in order to store them online. I recall reading that gmail doesnt give you 1Gb or 1Tb of disk space, but compresses your data so it feels like you have that much disk space, and because text compresses rather well, you can stick 1Gb of text into a relitively tiny space. Now compressed files, on the other hand, cant be compressed farther, and will most likely fill up your quota really quickly.
I can just hear people bitching and complaining when they send one 20 meg zip file and have gmail tell them they are out of storage space:P
They most likely use 64 megs of ram because, as mentioned earlier, it is probably the smallest (and cheapest) amount of ram that will work with their system. Also, they probably are using a kernel and software, as opposed to hardware to make the systems much more scaleable. A system with only hardware controls with no software would require the hardware itself to be replaced to change the functionality. Using software also allows them to use less expensive developers to develope the systems to be used. Who in their right mind would want to pay a company to develope BRAND NEW hardware when you can use an embedded linux kernel running on cheap and (for the most part ) COTS hardware.
I would suggest against the bootable CD unless you have a ton of ram. The maps are huge and the cd requires you to load parts of the OS and gamefiles to a ramdisk before launching them... this eats up a good chunk of ram even before the game is launched.

People are switching to X.org due to liscence incompatbilities of XFree86 with the GPL.
What are the differences between XFree86 and X.org, besides the liscences and names? I havnt really had any experiences with X.org

Wasnt a similar story posted a month or so ago about projectionists using NV gear to look for pirates video cameras in the audience?
This is true, but if his parents are paying the bills (and judging by the tone of his post) it isnt likely he has ever seen the contract.
How do you know if the terms of service and what not arent bad if your parents pay the bills?
