because if their fine was higher, they would close up shop and go into some other business. it's the only way they will keep on "serving" their customers.
Exactly. They REALLY like being able to watch everybody, automatically, from their desk. And that everybody else can't tell what they are doing.
You'll think they will go back to the 'old' ways they used to find terrorists. But no, they won't, because it 's not cool. Instead, they will go for hacking everyone's personal computers. Worldwide.
except you still have to live surrounded by a whole bunch of destitute people, and perhaps also lose your job, and the money you have saved also gets devalued.
when the economy crashes, it takes everyone connected to it along for the ride.
so you are either working really hard right now to try to prevent/delay the crash, or working really hard to separate yourself from the economy.
They are investing in this because the last upgrade cycle is over [HD flatscreens and blu-ray players]. Now sales are down because people are mainly just buying replacement units when they break, not new units into homes that don't already have one.
They want to try to move back to the early-adopter stage of sales for 4k.
..except for say, renting the information to "partners" for linking with offline purchases, or if you switch browsers or somehow the cookie gets removed or you switch to a private browser window...
Google doesn't only derive value from the information they gather about you by displaying you targeted online ads.
There are reasons why every ad network offering an 'opt-out' only stop displaying you targeted ads while it is in effect. And none of them are for your benefit.
Reading Google's opt-out page at https://support.google.com/ads/answer/2662922?hl=en, it only talks about opting out of "interest-based ads". As in, google still tracks you, only they don't apply the tracking information when presenting ads to you. Which is EXACTLY what I said.
And note, the google page completely ignores the entire idea of not tracking the user. That is simply not an option they will ever consider permitting the user to choose.
Yes. Unfortunately, you and the one other person in the US that are doing this, are easily distinguished [and thus, tracked] from everybody else by doing this.
Everybody else who doesn't have buckets of time trying to avoid being tracked [and still failing] are tracked in the more conventional fashion.
Sorry, that doesn't help anything. Google [heh] 'browser fingerprinting' and 'supercookies'. You pretty much have to throw your computer and cell phone away and move to another house, and you MIGHT manage to be disassociated from your existing tracking information. At least until the first time you log into gmail or facebook.
They also have representatives available 24/7/365 at the municipal, state and federal levels with both the political and police arms of the government to help with any problems they may have with the riff raff.
The primary change with Windows 10 seems to be that Microsoft has finally agreed with Apple that a desktop UI must be different from a tablet UI [as in, desktop mode and tablet mode].
Or maybe the idea that developers can create a single executable that can work equally poorly across a wide variety of device sizes [been there, done that, vast majority of developers either do the UI so it works well for one specific device size and crappy on all others, or so-of-ok across most device sizes]. Nothing about Microsoft's announcement indicates this time it will be different.
Yeah. GMO v2 has DRM...doesn't matter if you keep the seeds for next years crop, you still need to buy our "fertilizer" for it to work...and you'll still have to pay for the seeds again.
well, stop using my channels. I'm using channels 1-16 to stream 4k video from my computer to the TV next to it.

Yeah. If you post on Slashdot you get picked up by men in white coats instead of black helicopters.

I always looked through the skymall mag just for the crazy products.
Like the hotdog cooker [two holes for the hot dogs, two slots hotdog buns, appeared to work like a toaster].

No. Just like now with the various ad-networks "opt-out" setups.
You CAN'T opt-out of being tracked. This is not and never will be on the table.
You MAY be able to opt-out of being made aware of how much they are tracking about you.
Just like WinPhone 7.5. "We'll reskin the homescreen UI so it looks like you have WinPhone 8. That's good enough, right?"
Yes, the politics of fear is known to work very well.
What?

No, the total fine for all the calls will be closer to $57 than $0.912 billion. I will be surprised if the fine exceeds $1m.

Actual penalty: $57.00
They know they are really in the money, because it always costs more to change somebody's mind than it does to hold their original opinion...
