Keep in mind that Enlightenment is not really intended to be used with gnome anymore. It still works fine with gnome, of course and this compatability will remain. DR17, the next version is a complete rewrite. Not only will it be extremely faster, but it will include it's own file manager, EFM. It is quite amazing and certainly looks much better than all of the windows explorer ripoffs of other desktop environments. Also, we have a new binary config file format which will speed up the window manager startup considerably. There are tons of other features but the most important is of course this hardware accelerated eye candy.
I've always thought that flames were usually negative, profane, cruel, etc. For example, those possibly thousands of emails recieved by Microsoft and Mindcraft back during the "Mindcraft Fiasco." Many of these were really uncalled for as they probably only suceeded in giving linux users an image of profane cracker teenagers. I suppose flame makes it's point but I personally feel that a nicely worded comment would be more effective than essentially mail-bombing someone with very negative comments.
At $300 to $700, it will certainly not replace the household phone. You can get boxes for $200 or so and less if you sign up for some special internet service. And why such a fast processor? It would probably work fine with an early pentium. Or am I wrong?

Historically, the makers of game consoles lose a lot of money at first as the hardware is often more expensive then they charge for it. Console companies usually make their money in the following years selling games. The PlayStation 2 is theoretically more powerful than the SGI workstations that created the original Toy Story! The custom chip in the console costs about $260 alone, and the console is expected to retail at $300 or so. They would likely have to sell it for $400 or even $500 to break even! So, it seems a bit weird that they would risk everything when they know that they were going to lose money. Or am I stupid and wrong?

They said to keep your linux cd so you can reinstall it later... Apparently they have no faith that people who have used linux will keep NT longer than until they realize that there is solitaire on linux too.
could be interesting if wordperfect is open-sourced... it used to be one of the *major* word processors in the age of dos. I think that the linux version of it now sucks, but with a little bit of work and perhaps a cute, talking stapler that pops up at all the right moments to aid you in all of your word processing needs, and you have a spifftacular word processor to kill MS Office with!

perhaps if mozilla hurry's and gets stable, it and opera can duke it out while PC Magazine writes little articles about it in all of which they say: "Linux, an alternative to Windows invented by Finnish developer, Linus Torvalds and is now maintained by a team of hackers around the globe..." Die resource-sucking Netscape!!!

It boils down to censorship... *they* don't want the people to know anything and are breeding mindless, tv can't lie, the gov't is your friend, etc people on mind numbing sitcoms and Microsoft products. At least we have CmdrTaco, George Orwell ( he's alive, dammit!) Gillian Anderson, and David Duchovny on our side! Yeah, fight the power, down with Clinton and his illigetimate son, Bill Gates! Anyway, gotta go, those annoying black helicopters are circling my house again.

I suppose that money for linux can only help beat our evil adversary and their mountains of propaganda. I do not, however like their idea of selling their "new software for managing large amounts of systems" as proprietery. $2000 for unlimited?!? Redhat and many others are very good for sticking close to open source. I only hope that this new software does not sell good. Maybe they'll do 'that open source thang' then.
Are programmers really writing Linux and other open source software without gaining anything? As Eric S. Raymond said, (i think he said this anyway) most programs are written because of the programmers personal 'itch'. I know that whenever i code, I have a use for it, be at work, home, or whatever. I don't wake up in the morning and say "Gee golly, I think I want to write a 10,000 line program just so that a rich, fat CEO can make millions off of it while I sit at home and read/."
I think that in the future, the majority of Linux developers will have jobs in the industry as a consultant, sysadmin, etc and write programs to work more effieciently. Or perhaps some of them will be high school/college students writing programs as projects or whatever. I dunno.
Of course, then again, it's late and I'm tired. yawn
