Exactly! First they become our peers then they become our overlords.
Although, I vaguely remember being young trying to share food with the TV; it sounds similar. Oh TV, my one true friend. Ahem, but a robot could never be accepted as a peer they don't have TV's personality. Isn't that right TV?
Yeah but I still hate how smug math is for pwning me in the first place, even when I win! Take this unnofficial transcript between math and I.
Lou - Look Math! I won 100 bucks on the lotto!
Math - *scowling* How much did you spend on that ticket?
Lou - Well, uh 10 bucks so it's like I made $10 dollars on ever dollar I spent!
Math - *smiling evilly* Oh really? Was that the only ticket you bought this week?
Lou - Well no, but...
Math - AND... did you win on any of those tickets? How much did you spend altogether this week?
Lou - Well no but it was only another 10 so it's like I made 5 on...
Math - Please, spare me. How much have you spent this month?
Lou - Uh 80 but...
Math - and won?
Lou - with this it would be 120.
Math - Aha! You're return is more like.50 cents on the dollar!
Lou - But overall...
Math - Lies! Statistically this year you've lost more money than you gained!
Lou - It was disposable income!!
Math - How much would that have made long term investments!
Lou - I don't know!
Math - Or how much you would have saved on your mortgage!
Lou - I don't know, I don't know!
Math - Fool, now go make me a one minute egg.
Lou - Fine, right after I put some money in a stocks so we can retire.
Math - Idiot, why bother? You have a higher probability of making money on the stock market by random selection. A monkey can make money on the stock market better than you!
Lou - *sobbing uncontrollably* I hate you! I hate you!
Math - Wait till he hears about his income tax. Muhahahaha!
I may have had to improvise some parts but that's fairly accurate.
I call shenanigans! No one said that the robots were in fact ninjas. Just because most pirates fight with ninjas doesn't mean pirates only fight ninjas. Correlation != causation!!
Good point about LinkedIn it skipped my mind. Funny that, because I almost don't think of it as a social network. I guess that really shows how different it is amongst the others and given it's business slant that's where Google needs to be! I have to admit, it's too scary how well the Ads that come in to me on linkedin match up against my job function.
I'll admit up front I'm not one of these technology pundits that make endless speculation but something occurs to me. In the big picture doesn't the future of social networking truly depend on the interopability of these social networks? And if so, wouldn't the player that steps up and comes up with a method to bring interop between social networks and then effectively control that method (heck they don't even have to make it proprietary just control the protocol) will be the one you want a stake in if you're yahoo/google/ms?
I'm on Facebook, I enjoy it but it's clear to me it's not worth $15 billion. As others have said the "next big thing" will come along and draw people away again. I can already see how facebook is going the way of MySpace, sadly with the number of applications that people clutter their profile with (myself included!). Then when everyone rushes off facebook then what's facebook worth? Hardly 15 Billion but the market seems to responded positively to this announcement and Microsofts stock price has done well today (because they beat google).
My point is that I believe the real stake will be the provider that brings people the ability to use the service that they want and still make their connections. Otherwise people are blowing their money on things that have no real value due to user flux.
I couldn't agree more. Why aren't we looking at using existing invasive species to create biofuel. You pay people to extract the invasive species to protect indigenious ones and then take the extracted material to produce fuel. Where I live (Vancouver, BC) Himilayan Blackberry and English Ivy are a serious threat to native species. As much fun as it is to pick blackberry in the summer it's still scary how quickly this stuff takes over. What better way to to handle a problem?
Hahaha, who knows though. He was quick to be cremated... it's important to destroy evidence that your spirtual leader was on anti-depressants when you have such a hard line against such medicines.:D
Umm, given Zonk's track record of posting relevant stories wouldn't -1 Zonk be more appropriate? My life would be much easier if I could filter out those types of articles.:P
You really have stated the whole point of this project quite nicely.
I'm guessing this is going to be high risk but considering how (IMHO) education is the root to solving so many problems I'd say it's worth the go. Seriously, can it get worst for them??
I hear what you're saying. I should have mentioned "or specializing in something you enjoy" to specializing in what you're good at as well.
I just wanted to convey that specialization is an option and quite viable if pick an appropriate specialization.
If you are truly a generalist, then it should be easy to tailor the information on your resume to suit the position you're applying for and market the "extra" skills as a bonus when you land the interview. So if the position you are looking for is say an Exchange Administrator you list that as being a "Primary" skills and then list your other skills seperately. When hiring managers or HR people have to hunt around your resume to find what they are looking for they'll pass you over.
That said, if you want to do a mish mosh of just about anything you want to look at a smaller company that has a small IT team or maybe a start-up but start-ups eventually grow (or die) and you might find your self having to pick a role. Your other option here could also be contract work, it's a great way to do varying things provided you're only landed quick contracts.
In the end I'd advise you pick a specialty and see it through. Generalism is fine but if you want to be the best you specialize. Pick the one thing you're best at or love the most and pursue it with everything you got. You're general knowledge will never be wasted, everything ties together in one way or another. I was a bit of a generalist too and when I really focused on my speciality my general knowledge really paid off since I could always talk about my work in the larger context of what was going on.
Why does it seem like these useless articles keep getting posted by Zonk?
Seriously, it was a non-article. I'm not even thinking about how many friends I have on there but I am floored by how easy it has been to connect with people I haven't heard from in years and all the need applications that have been built on top of the platform.
But this article was just a piece of rubbish. He misses the point, people in my demographic don't collect friends. A lot of us look to reconnect. We've gone through iterations of lost contacts or losing touch and this is one way to reconnect without the chaos of some other sites.
Now if only that privacy policy was re-written so I'd feel a bit better about having my information there.
Seriously, when I first started reading the post that's exactly what I was thinking! I feel like I might be a little prejudiced in jumping to that conclusion...
But it wasn't creating Orbos that destroyed the natives of Mars it was the illegal war that the Cydonias declared against the Tholusians over fabricated evidence that Tholusians were about to produce their own Orbos... Really, brush up on your Martian history!
Now excuse me while I drive off in my car that runs on sea water.
Ok, now that made my day! Oh thank you!!
Is that a Metal Gear reference? Now that would be an event, Mario joins forces with Snake.
Mario no, don't bash that box! Snakes inside!
(Later...)Snake: "Take off that Racoon costume, you look ridiculous."
Mario: "Mama mia!"
When?
Uh... Long long ago, in a galaxy far far away.
On a more serious note, why do we get subjected to posts like this that inevitably turn to useless rants and/or someone calling someone else a Nazi?
Exactly! First they become our peers then they become our overlords.

They could be robots sent by the MPAA or RIAA...

Silly lemming! It's easy to do when you play to kill the lemmings!
What? There's another goal to the game?
I swear the GP is some kind of RIAA attack dog trained to saturate the net with lies. Good job showing him up.
Insightful... I always thought playing Marathon was bad for you.

Funny for a dead guy he's still writing lot's of crap. That and don't his lawyers claim that he moved on to a higher plan or something or other?
I really thought this story was going to be about bioengineering and not computing. I think one aspect of my reality blurred somewhere.

I was thinking the same thing! So I tagged the story earthneedsdust.
Thinking about your comment on the rovers, will this mean folks will say "They can put a man on the moon but they can't get dust of Mars!"

PERFECT! Too bad no one mods day old posts.
In Google Kenya, Kenya googles you!
Nope, it just doesn't flow right...
