If you wait 55 years (10,000/15)/12 then you will have spend $10,000 on your monthly subscription, and you still won't get to keep the songs.
What if you download a bunch of songs from napster and than just never hook it back up to the service again? Will it expire? And if so, what if your computer breaks, how can you keep your songs updated?
I remember a/. story about them opening up updates to everyone. Too lazy to look it up. Besides, I have been updating all my copies of windows just fine;)
"We have no interest in preventing anyone from receiving updates, particularly security updates" -David Lazar, director of Genuine Windows in Microsoft's Windows client organization.
Riiiight... because I'm sure all the bots are legal copies of windows right? Does it only occur to me that the reason many machines are so unpatched is because they are illegal copies installed by the kid next door?
Microsoft stopped verifying copies of windows for major security reasons. They said the health of the internet was more important than blocking illegal copies. The logic is sound. Let everyone get the updates so you don't ruin the internet for the people who actually paid for their copy of window.
I work in tech support. A lady called in yesterday with a problem and I told her to install SP2. She claimed that HP told her never to install SP2, and that if she did, they would have her uninstall it. She said they told her it causes too many problems. This is why there are zombie computers still.
I don't see why they couldn't make something like this using software? I imagine it just nullifies all small eratic movements and sends the more general movements to the computer. It doesn't seem that complicated to me...
but of course, we already all knew that because we read the comments on the last story....right?! I assume everything on here is false until I read the comments and someone proves it right!
I love how everyone waits until their supposed patent is huge before making a legal move. Like, they obviously weren't doing anything with the technology, so it's good that someone else picked it up and made it useful to consumers.
The other problem I see with this is that there are TWO companies making a fuss about it - so which one owns the LCD patent for real?
I just have a hard time feeling sorry for a company who comes out saying "Oh - we have a patent on the wheel - we just forgot to do anything about it before! Now that it's worth a heap of money let's sue everyone in sight!
The solution is this. If someone hasn't done anything with their patent within say...3 years, then it's fair game. This will help things from becoming stagnant. And someone will check up on you - like they do when you're collecting unemployment - to make sure you're actually trying to do something with your patent.
The other solution (more realistic) is to not allow lawsuits so late in the game. Like, if you wait until someone else has made billions of dollars on your patent, then you should be out of luck. There should be like a 3 year time limit on suing people who are using your idea. That's reasonable, right?
It goes by whoever owns the IPs. Yes, this causes some weird results sometime, but I don't know of any better way short of contacting the ISP and convincing them to tell you who owns that IP and where they live...
We use whois.sc on my site and 90% of the results seem to be accurate.
This site will find the location of an IP for free, and also do some other stuff if you pay for it. http://www.whois.sc/0.0.0.0 (where 0.0.0.0 is the IP address).
And this site does very advanced web site info gathering stuff, but it does cost money: http://www.ninjadigital.com/
This plugin for winamp does what you are talking about. It automatically moved the volume up and down to maintain and constant volume. It works quite well, but I'm not sure how much you can fine tune it.
"For the record, my primary reason for beginning the site is that I did not have any other phone options when I wanted to switch providers. The more I investigated the situation, the more I realized how monopolistic Verizon (at the time Bell Atlantic) was. In fact, each Bell company has carved out its own segment of the country. Haven't you ever wondered why it is that none of the Bells have ever launched a campaign into another Bell's territory for dial tone or DSL? Either it's just coincidence, or they have agreed not to do so--a completely illegal practice."
uhh..actually the government divided up the country to the different companies because back in the old days all the companies would have to have been using different sets of lines. It was absurd to allow every company that comes along to rewire the city, so they just divided it up - every place had one company - one set of lines.
Now, of course, that has all changed, and phone companies are competing locally with eachother. The poster admits that "at the time..." there were no other choices, but I bet now he has at least 3.
"We are currently evaluating making the WinFS storage subsystem available on this platform and will make the decision based on what is best for customers."
Usually whats best for customers is the same as what's best for business, but not in every case. It's bad business to give away to XP users the only thing that makes longhorn worthwhile...
What will be our reason to buy longhorn? And wasn't it announced on here a while back that they scraped winFS for longhorn? Why yes it was...
Australia is not clueless about how the internet works. Clueless would be to pass a law banning such content, a law they could never possibly enforce.
They are just saying their citizens and coporations should not be promoting the material. It is not a difficult law to enforce. If company X is selling pills to kill yourself with, and providing instructions on how to use them, Australia will fine them.

Yea, but a betamax tower can load all the segments of a movie automagically!

What was wrong with betamax?

...the acting in that movie looks incredibad. I mean, every character looks more annoying than Jar Jar.
Right here
Just seems they should solve any dispute between themselves before they start going after third parties...
Or do they own patents for two different parts of LCD technology?

I will not pay for news. So help me I will use "KazzaNews" if I have to! This will be an interesting new form of piracy.
Ah - you must not be from the United States! You must understand "England" all counts as one place.
priceless...

What they should do is put a lawyer in that position - then maybe they can get the money they deserve!

I like being able to make toast with my old processor...
I agree wholeheartedly. My main question is - if your hypothetical was true - what is "reasonably priced?"
ahem...legal ones of course...

It's no use - headsets just act as a big radiation antenna.
