How would they make money (needed to pay people's salaries) if they join a non-profit like the Mozilla Foundation?? Unless you can make money on the service side of Open Source software, the whole point is to get everything cheap including labor (or free labor in the community)....I just was at a talk with a number of VC companies in which the idea was how to bring labor costs to ZERO in OpenSource if the product produced by that labor is free, and make money selling the brand/advertising to the bigger company and so on. Investors/VC see this as the money making way to make multi millions. By the way Apple did a large downsizing that almost killed them when times were tough in the early and mid nineties.
I support competition and standards but OpenOffice for the Mac is SLOW, loads X11, unstable, doesn't use the Mac interface at all, and causes kernel panics on my PowerBook and iMac!! I use MS Office for the Mac and it IS good software. But unless MS adopts the opendocument format as an import/export option I will not be in the game. This is horrible for us Mac OS X users.
The more cool stuff Google does, the press it gets, and the money they make my stock in them is going through the roof. Anyone that loves using Google should buy the stock. I sold a bit this morning. They paid off all my debt, I ordered my new quad PowerMac, and are on the way to buying my vacation property in Cabo!! Keep up the good work Google!
Good point, only thing I would say is I would wait for the Intel machines. The bus, processor and the GPU are outdated. In fact the GPU is TWO years old in the market place.....I have a PowerBook and will wait until the Intel machines are out. The current PowerBooks are now far from powerful.
They will probably go with a 19/20 inch, to bring true HD resolution to the their portables. They have so much of the media market it would make sense.
Wow, but we either cut deeply or face huge taxes. Which is it? Problem is people like Bush want to cut taxes AND increase spending (he is the biggest spender ever). So I say cut slightly but increase taxes in a big way! Look Canada, Europe, Japan have all those things you mention because they pay roughly 50% of their income in income taxes and actually get LESS for them. You bitch and bitch but what are your solutions? This is the problem with the Democrats now, it is one thing to be against everything the Republicans do (which is good) but it is a very different thing to actually have an alternative plan. Which they don't. So we get into this mess.
Also I would say for a huge group of people things are going down hill, but for the others things are going up hill just as fast. I just had my HS reunion (10 year) and it was so interesting. Half of the class were in dead end jobs, lots of debt etc....The other half owned homes, great careers, no debt and are doing great. We all started working/middle class but it mirrors the change in the world in all countries to a small middle.
For American style lives and commutes a hybrid is laughable. It is not the best solution by far. Perhaps in Tokyo it makes sense. When I was there it can take hours to go very little distance and most of the time you are standing still. On a freeway a 4 cylinder Honda does better. Leaders of the European car makers said at the auto show that this is Americans, they like to talk the talk, but really DON'T walk the walk, and hybrids are nothing more than "see look I am cool and doing something" but really doing nothing for the environment long term. They cost more, do use less gas but are not the solution for helping the environment, and the batteries will be an enivromental disaster to dispose of. Like "clean" nuclear power, no fossil fuels but what the hell about the waste.
Well if you read what I said it would be a FINANCIAL incentive in terms of the Intel chips and perhaps other components. Yes, not on the opinion, but on financial pressure....I think they will do the same on the iTunes/record company pricing contracts which are due to expire. They will bow to financial/contract pressure and increase the prices. Look at what has happened to FireWire vs. USB. They've moved towards the Windows/Linux USB model and become more integrated to better compete.
I think Apple will move to Intel on this just like they did with the chips. Perhaps Intel will give them a financial incentive (ie lower chip prices) to make the change to the HD DVD format
You describe the MAC OS X operating system and hardware system as well. Totally proprietary as well even though they use open source stuff in the system they are not open source.
Really impressed with Yahoo's new mail. I saw an associate's preview. I use Google and use the POP option to download my Apple Mail app but I know someday (probably sooner than later) that will be a pay $ option instead of the free option it is know. But $20 a year for a ad free application on the web, I'd pay that whether it is Google or Yahoo that has the best system...I do agree with many that Google is becoming the mega corporation to fear as it replaces MS as the dominant force. Think about it. You deal with MS if you use Windows, but Google if you use Mac, Windows, or Linux. So they will be the new arrogant empire soon.
Now Google is being sued buy the Authors Guild for massive copyright infrigment in US District court. Seems clear to me. Google is NOT a library but a for profit corporation and therefore commercial use is prohibited under law. I wrote a published short story in college which I hold the copyright to and if was to show up I would sue. Google seems to argue you can contact them and they will remove the material.
Hmmmm I thought copyrights were to prevent corporations from using it without FIRST getting it authorized. Do no evil my ass.
No hotel encodes payment info....Just room number and length of stay! This story is nothing more than a lie. It makes it hard for people who really believe in privacy etc....when this stuff is out there. Makes everyone look foolish and makes it harder to argue when people on the otherside can just point and say privacy advocates are nothing but liars!!
Only problem is in the license agreement you sign or agree to in order to use the product clear states that the terms can be changed on you. It is kind of like a cell contract. They can change the agreement at anytime. Your only recourse is to agree or stop using the device and go to another product. The free market would in this case develop an alternative product free of DRM. The only problem there is the content providers might not license their content which they have the right to do.
At least they are trying something new!!

Linux is not even where Windows 2000 is in terms of usability. I use the Mac but there is nothing really new in terms of how the system works compared to all other (windows mainly) systems, although it is beautiful. I give MS credit for trying to change the computing style for years to come. NO MENU BAR on Office, explorer, IE 7 (small one) and the media player. Time will tell if this is the way to go with a VERY, VERY graphical GUI. Interesting though.
So would this CLEARLY make the GPL unconstitutional?? An attorney friend told me YES. Let the free software market (Linux) and the proprietary market (Windows and MAC OS) fight for market share. Only when they fear each other is there real innovation. I use Linux but will fight this. It goes WAY to far. Get rid of the stupidity in software patents but let real innovators (especially small guys) get paid. Or I will ask that all programmers must work for free....Oh yah slavery is uncontitutional too. My bad...
The are going to loose the labels and the majority of their song stock (perhaps), they let both MS and Creative beat them at the patent office. The anti-iPod movement is growing among the ranks of real music lovers who want a better and corporation-independant service, many newspaper stories recently reported. I think the "Look I am a with the iPoders" just makes me laugh. Bunch of corporate brainwashed masses. The iPod is looking more and more like a fad and Apple's mistakes don't help their image.
Become a memeber of the ANTI-CULT, FIGHT THE IPOD!!!
It is for warranty and repair contracts. You can get a 3 year warranty with AppleCare. The are telling there corporate/scientific users that they will honor this going forward so to reduce the risk for those buying machines now. They need to have replacement parts and machines if you buy one on the last day they will use the PowerPC. This is the reason! People over think everything Apple does.
I really like Apple but they have a history of being really innovative and then shooting themselves in the foot. I know it is the labels but by not catering to them Apple will loose. Sad to say. This is the first time they have a market dominate position and I'd hate to see in a few years people saying "Appple F***ed up again" Message to Steve Jobs: don't be too high and mighty that you risk iTunes/iPod innovation.
Agreed. Although Linux is what Google runs on so they use it and support it.
Apple Mac OS X is another story....They like Yahoo have no need to support it. When was the last Yahoo update??? Apple builds there own in house service called iChat and the user base is small.
it pushes more and more of the startups and the work for the smaller companies overseas. To investors and businesses the overseas workforce becomes a better and better deal and the jobs that would be here for the less fortunate actually have to move to India/China/Russia because there is an even greater difference in pay. They look better and better in comparison. This is the problem. Google will drain the employment base not at the top, but everyone else.
Google is turning into pure corporate evil. They are attempting to emulate Microsoft's behavior only with some tweaks by extending into everyones market and crushing them and making one NEED Google. Here in Europe where I am visiting there is a very strong feeling that Google is a American cultural danger to Europe and that MS and Google want to dominate the desktop and the internet. It looks in some ways that the fears are founded.

Simple solution WE ALL MUST PAY MORE TAXES. For everything the government does. Higher income taxes to pay the debt off and the JPL guys!!!

See update to main post! Ok perhaps not every known hotel, but the executive VP for IT with Starwood says no known system.

Even Wired.com has a front page headline called "Greedy Google"....Yes they are going the corporate domination route.
