My thoughts exactly. I switched my small consulting company to Linux servers and let go our part time (40K/year) IT guy and hire cheap college kids to do the work. They like the experience and I get things cheap. I had to pay the Microsoft IT guy a lot of money just because of the market rates around this area.
Yah the first thing I thought when I read the headline was these are all the JAVA employees going given the rumors of open sourcing JAVA.
I love Linux but I do see it as a race to the bottom in terms of cheap software (free too) and low cost labor. It is a great package for companies (even small ones like mine) and especially big corporations and governments because it boosts profits.
So this seems to be the method I aquired the information is the issue. I seem to have broken it down like this in simple terms if I am reading things right.
If I sneak into Apple and take pictures, documnet copies etc and post them online I am not protected.
But if I am told or given those documents, pictures, etc. by another person (third party) I am protected. Is this true or am I missing something????
I say the solution is to have America be divided between rich and poor. 50% own cars (the rich) and the other 50% don't. That simple. 50% less cars....
I believe as resources get more scarce and gas is $20 per/gallon perhaps in 40 years it won't be what type of car determines your economic status but do you HAVE a car.
Ecomomics has ruled since the dawm of man. It won't change.
As for the water problems. I could always kill you and steal your water dude....This is the war you speak of????
Welcome to the world of BIG government. The conservatives want to spy on you and the liberals want to control your behavior because you can't. Politics 101.
Apple could license Fairplay. That is the issue to the French. No one at any cost can compete because Apple won't even license the DRM to other Mp3 hardware makers. It is not the iTunes music store being so dominate that is the issue in France but the fact that purchases made by an individual are locked to the iPod.
Yes I know you can rip to a CD and then import as Mp3 to any player, and that is why the French are looking mighty stupid on this issue, but the bottom line in terms of what they are after is: Getting more HARDWARE players to compete not the iTunes software.
I'd rather see Apple pull iTunes out of France than see them give into very dumb political games. Knowing the corruption of the French politican I would say some of Apple's hardware competitors in Asia are behind this.
I have a friend who is a paralegal and he said this is already being looked at by class action lawyers at his firm. A complaint by a fellow lawyer started it. Yes, they are looking at a fraud class action for knowingly selling a service that technically CANNOT be delivered.
I would say keep all your past bills as a record of your service dates.
My own consulting company switched to Linux for all servers. I saved huge amounts of money and made our company more profitable.
I predict unless Windows license costs come WAY down, this Linux OS will be the dominant corporate operating system in the future. Especially at big business because all CEO's like to here LOW cost whether it is for IT or labor.
Good move IBM (I own shares)....Now instead of paying MS they can pay the shareholders in higher returns!
I acutally use a PowerBook but I've always wondered why tying the iPod to the iTunes music store via Fairplay isn't a anti-trust violation too since they have the Windows market share in online music and MP3 players....Anyone smarter than me know why?? I have a Windows machine but can choose to use Outlook, Window Media Player etc, I am not forced to....Why isn't including QuickTime tied closely to OS X also the same thing.
They got the patent and told no one. Then as SBC's teams were reviewing all the IP they owned found the gem and thought "WOW, no one knows." Many companies probably don't know they have things they do.
The fundamental problem with open source is they COPY proprietary software and do not INNOVATE new things. That is why open source will be nothing more than a tool for geeks and a cost cutting tool for big corporations and big government.
I was reading a number of rumor sites that think Apple will update their MacBook Pro models to the 2.5GHZ Duo Core chip in summer around the WWDC. This would make sense since that will be the high end chip at that time and now Apple will NEED to update much faster or the speed comp/value with the Intel world will be clear. It would seperate the single core iBook replacement.
One thing about Apple going Intel, upgrade cycles will be dramatically shorter.
All the power needed (causing Greenhouse gases) for development manufacturing and running the worlds technology is also causing huge output in gases from power stations smoke stacks and the emissions in producing the metal, plastics, and chemicals that go into all devices. Not to mention the coal stations spewing carbon to power your computer right now. Look at China. The worst air anywhere. I couldn't where my contacts there because the pollution was so bad.

Cost savings means MORE profit!!! That simple. A friend of mine has a mid sized company in Seattle and switched to OSS and the savings made his profit much larger (accounting looked great) and he then sold the company to a competitor for a huge gain.
Come on, cost savings means the money goes to the owners (shareholders) pockets and not Microsoft, Apple or any other propreitary system.
Also it saves paying the tech guys for stupid certs like the MCSE etc.... which mean nothing but more wages...It drives labor costs down as well which is why big corporations and governments like it.
Remember he did say Apple would move to Intel 3 years ago. After the annoucement by Jobs on the move, Jobs stated that they always had MacOS X for Intel from the beginning and Freescale's CEO said they were ready to move years ago but the G5 stopped the move....
How about this!! So if someone in France steals my music/movie/graphic design or any other material I have copyrighted to make a living....I would expect the same respect of French property in the US.
Next time I am down at the store I get to walk out with French cheese and wine for free. It would only be the fair thing to do.
Ads are their business model. First it will be this, then flash, then TV style ads embedded in pages for broadband users. I can see it now. Search for a hemriod product today and the next time you launch Google a cheesy TV drug commerical in a box will start playing along side your search AND a map to the drug store will pop up...This is Google's future.
Just heard on NPR about this story and they kept on referring to the "Google Empire"....Looks like they are now the new Microsoft in computing!
Bullshit. This is a fair article. Apple's software is superior but it's hardware isn't. The G4 is dead and the graphics cards in the PowerBooks are TWO YEARS OLD!!!
This is a fair review. He gives them a lot of credit for some things but not on its core functions. What he is saying is this piece of software is not up to Apple's own HIGH standards.
By the way tell us Pages is a good piece of software and you should be banned from Slashdot
There is a reason FOX wanted myspace.com....It is nothing more than a place for crap bands to advertise freely (although some good ones yes) and if you look at the types of people there they are FOX's target market. Dumb, big media crazy, all think alike (read favorites and comments etc) and self absorbed! Check it out it I speak the truth.
Mac version on the way.....Yah as a Mac user I will believe it when I see it. Perhaps they are having problems with the codec on Mac or perhaps they just made a resource development decision. Well, this Mac user hopes on the way doesn't become a long term wait.
Looks like after spending billions to aquire Skype, eBay doesn't have the money left to develop a Mac version 2.0. Not available and no date of release given. Another frustrating day to be a Mac user....Sigh
If she is telling the truth she has NO problems, if she is lying then she SHOULD be sued. The law is a TOOL in business. If their aim is to bankrupt her that is one thing but she should win if she has written something accurate.
The traditional media, writers, publishers, are mostly Democrats. Especially in the major media markets of LA and NYC where the ad dollars would be transfered to the internet sites and the traditional guys would loose big (ie Dems loose contributions). Second quite frankly the Democrats blame in large part the blogging world for their losses in the last election. It has nothing to do with free speech in their minds but the fact that the Republicans have so much more money than the Democrats that they can overwhelm them with Republican speech and not get their side out.

Well yes but age verification would be credit card based so you would have to have one in a 18+ year olds name.
Why the hell then do they take money from the labels. Break the contract or better yet DON'T sign up in the first place.
A bunch of RICH hypocritical artists. Dump the perks and the labels money and then say something.

Yes certainly. But theft is theft, and I think the law should see no difference between stealing a DVD physically and digitally.

Perhaps MS buys Opera in 2009
