Service contracts is a major way. You sited a web host I'm sure icdsoft.com has a service contract with someone to fix problems(unless they are a reseller of hosting). Mid-Large Businesses and governement agencies all need service contracts for help or they won't use a software package for the most part. Plus if you look at mysql.com you'll notice they also over consulting and training.
To hit us, I believe that if it is on course to hit us, it will be eaten by a small dog from different Universe that is larger than our entire Universe because as improbable things go this is quite possible.
If a person lives to be 85 they would only get 33 MBs a day. How will that be able to record ever conversation in decent quality. Also 500 you can get some 5 inch ide drive, I'd like to see sombody string a bunch of them to there body and hook up the computer, there life would be real interesting, because they'd get beat up everyday for being a loser.
MySQL is a good database for small web apps. But it can't compare with Oracle or even lowly MS-SQL. It still lacks and triggers, I'd imagine that a lot of logging needs to be done for a health care app. A trigger in the database would seem to be important for this case. Secondly I'm gonna catch flak for this MS-SQL scales better than MySQL. MySQL will be there one day but its not quite there.
Have you tried google, there are only thousands of websites dedicated to Windows Server Administration and.Net programming. What about books... whats this 4,944 books found in an Amazon search on.Net. They are comparable platforms but don't make up stuff to say one is better than the other.
A.Net app could run just on the client if you are dealing with a small physicians office..Net would be a much better choice than PHP, realistically no business is going to put an internal app on a shared host. If it is to be a webbased app running either J2EE or ASP.NET it could coexist with other apps on one server, it all depends upon users and load. For a healthcare provider which has to meet government requirements for privacy a platform with no company to back it up is fool hardy at best.
That is desktop UNIX, not enterprize server UNIX. There are millions and millions of servers running Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX that by far eclipse the number of Mac desktops. But if you through in BSD and Linux to that number I would imagine that all Macs(desktops and servers) wouldn't even match 10% of the Unix servers in the world.
How about the fact that Mac Servers suck in comparsion to HP UX or Sun Enterprize level servers. Sure you can make a crappy cluster but that doesn't match what you can do with Unix or the security. Mac OS is used on the desktop by a small percentage of agents.
They aren't the only one who pack editingfeatures in on the camcorder. Look at sony, hitachi, canon... etc mini dv camcorders they all have editing features as well.

It not like every Open Source solution doesn't have security holes. Lets face it, ASP.NET is a more powerful solution than PERL or PHP. I've used them all and I must say ASP.net is surpirisingly powerful. But security flaws occur in all software so why makes this.Net one seem so horrible.
Now you may be right about the IT not making any sense. But Chewbacca did not live on Endor he only fought the Empire there when the second Death Star was being built. Come on this is Slashdot, news for nerds.

Well if your running load balanced applications servers this can help still. Both Raid 5 and 10 can exceed.7 GBPS if configured correctly. Also most business servers use SCSI.
Real developers only code there ASP in vi and then command line ftp to the IIS server. If you don't do this you are a weak developer. Only the weak will use a better tool for the job. Just like weak carpenters use power saws instead of hand saws.
Um, someone is forgetting about the single largest shipper of UNIX* systems in the world: Apple, which eclipses all other vendors.
Apple has been selling Unix for a few years. IBM, Hp, and Sun have all been selling for 20+ years. I highly doubt Mac has reached Suns install base, let alone big blue. Perhaps you should think about what a small time player Mac is. Sun was 155 on the Fortune 500 and all do is Unix. Mac was not even ranked.
Mac is a small time unix player, how many processors do there servers support... 2? I would argue a 16 processor AIX Machine or Solaris Server would equal 8 of the best OS X servers for install base. Plus you don't see many data centers using Mac. Mac is a minor player in the computer world there biggest contribution in the last 10 years is the Ipod.
Its no crime to block sites at the end users side. Read your ISPs service agreement. This is good thing to block it, the people who view this stuff are breaking the law as well. I agree though that they should get the people designing the sites as well. Tell me do you think its a crime to block spam from getting to the end user as well? That is the same concept.
Mac server market is a joke. HP is a major player, the server market is down to 4 major players and several minor players. HP is number 2. Mac is meaningless on the server side.
The article was about new computer sales for databases, I really don't think companies were buying old desktop machines and being included in this article.
What moron would by a system to be a database that comes with XP lets be realistic if you are shopping for server hardware you can buy it without an OS and also the MS OS would be Windows Server 2003 or 2000 possibly. Database servers aren't run on desktop pcs.

Longhorn is what 2 years off. Graphics cards will be cheaper by then and will easily meet the requirements even onboard graphics.

I would think a flash client for a medical app is rediculous.

how about Unix then, I think the military should be running something closed sourced and backed by a company.

Last time I looked Linux wasn't a DBMS. Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 they have per processor licensing. How will Linux stop this?

I was thinking the same thing, Mandrake 9.1 was the current version one year ago.
