    Although I don't think anyone uses OS X servers. I know someone out there as some example of a company using one, but not many.

    In ten years people will walk into datacenters see someBlade sitting there and the manager will say I don't know what we were thinking buying those. They simply aren't cost effective, which is what they were supposed to be. For the same price you can get some real servers that are more capable.

    I really doubt that. IBM is the only major manufacturer solidly behind Linux. I see more Oracle running on Solaris and Windows than Linux. This is just like the way firefox is having its usage growth begining to slow. It may be a really good product but there are only so many willing to switch. Plus you add in the fact that corporations are locked into getting at least some Windows servers for things like SMS, unless your suggesting that Linux is going to take over the desktop market in the next 3 years.

    When it comes to operating systems, Unix and Windows servers continued to grow. Unix server revenue was $5.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004 while the corresponding figure for Windows was $4.6 billion.

    caping donations is crazy. In a free country you should be able to donate as much money as you want. Every American's vote is just as powerful... Well except for in Presidential elections since we have an old outdate electoral college system, that makes your vote more powerful if you state has low turnout in comparison to a state with high turnout.

    The idea that China and India are going to eat us a live is myth. In the 80's it was Japan and Germany's efficient systems that were going to overrun us. Yet the US is still more productive today 25 years later than the two of them combined. If you think a third world country like India is going to overrun us your crazy. For every programmer or customer service agent that gets a job they have 30 people who can barely scratch together enough food to live. China is an oppresive society that does not allow its workers to think, they will never get close to us in productivity. They will eventually implode just like the USSR, another false power to overwelm us. People on this site need to have more confidence in the US.

    IBMs product line is deverse enough that Linux can fall so flat on its face that no one runs it in 10 years and IBM will still be the worlds top IT company. Don't get me wrong IBM is heavily investing in Linux, but they have a huge Windows business plus a huge Unix business, plus an enterprize DBMS, etc all of which can be very profitable without Linux. They have there bets covered.

    If you run Win XP Pro or 2000 pro you can run IIS with up to 10 concurrent connections, that should be good enough for most home use. Through it asp and asp.net are both available. Of course that will cost you about $110 for the license

    Its more than just the administrators competence, its also his work load. If he is administering many computers in a mixed Windows\Linux\Unix enviroment with different verisions of each it is very difficult to keep everything up to date on all patches.

    I would think a major reason is that Linux has several comercial vendors, most notiably Red Hat. Outside of web hosts you don't see much BSD and it is usually FreeBSD for workstation if anything. I highly doubt BSD will ever be big in its self since you can take the code from it and put it in your OS and not worry about licensing issues.

    Plus the fact that .Net C++ is barely used. I would wager that VB.Net and C# make up over 95% of development using the .Net platform.

    It is against the structure of Java and .Net to be used to write an Operating System. Java was made to be portable between operating systems not programming OS's. .Net code for the most part removes the .dll hell of programming Windows and allows programs to be installed on the various versions of Windows without modification so I can install the same program on Win 98 and Win Server 2003 without issue. MS must of realized that 64 bit processing was around the corner because you can move .Net apps between 32-bit and 64-bit with ease.

    how about the fact your paying $30+ to have an inferior server. I would rather pay for a linux, bsd, or windows shared hosting plan for $5 - $10 a month. Lets face it Mac is just a hobbiest computer.

    it only works if the camera is built to accept so how many existing camera already exist that this device won't work on millions? Plus I'm mods will be found to skirt around this tech.

    open source quality apps. That's the next level up.

    Thats crazy, open source is great but commercial apps are much more polished, there are some exceptions like Firefox and MySQL but for the most part your statement does not hold true.

    Are you joking or serious. In 50 years there will still be wars and the primary infantry will be humans not robots. These things are closer to radio control cars than warriors. I imagine industiralize nations will have soldiers that look more like storm troopers though and 3rd world soldiers will look the same as today.

    Get a state or federal gov job. They don't merge or get bought out. They are much more secure than private sector tech jobs. Jobs at colleges can be that way too. But it depends some tech jobs at colleges can have there funding pulled out from under them. The programming most likely won't be exciting but your looking for stability more than cutting edge tech.

    an rdms does so much more. availability and redundency. What happens in a power outage if you have several gigs in memory your ups better be able to stand up long enough for everything to be backed up to disk. Primary memory is not the place for important datastores, unless your trying to lose your job. Poof power outage or software patch leakes some memory and your screwed. Raid 10 Oracle or all my critical data sitting on a $100 dimm. I'll choose the slow Oracle.

    well thats not completely true. A workstation in some office is more likely to have a static ip and be on 24 - 7. Of course it is more likly to be admistered by someone who knows what they are doing then someone who refers to their computer as the hard drive and the monitor as the computer.
