    it really depends on cost of living in your area. if you live in central pa I'd say between 30 and 45 thousand. I would imagine it is higher in high cost areas like San Jose and NYC.

    Obviously you can do that, but what business is going to share a name with another site. That might work for a personal site but not for a business site.

    Are you suggesting he hosts sites for his clients on ips and forgoes domains, I'm sure he'll get alot of business like that, besides the fact you can only host one site per ip. He'll be getting horrible use out of his ip pool.

    Changning nameservers on a domain will take 48-72 hours but dns is basically going to update after ttl specifies. I've worked for a large web hosting company and the only provider that we saw a cache go over 24 hours with was AOL all the other major ISP did not hold a cache for very long.

    They are going to continue to offer Sparc platforms, its clear you have not read about this. The Spark V is not the succesor to the Sparc IV, the Sparc IV is going to progress to a a Sparc IV+ chip. They are also are creating a chip name Niagara. They had 4 chips on the product board for the next few years, they could not market them all successfully, so it was a good move to cut some of the chips.

    Yeah but that is accomplished by work and he can't brag about it to his non tech friends. He can show his friends the gigabit networking equipment and talk about how much he spent on it.

    The security mechanisms in the NT derivatives are considerably more sophisticated than those in traditional UNIX systems.

    This is why Windows never has any worms and Solaris and FreeBSD have them all the time. Is this Mr Gates or Mr Balmer writing this or somebody whos only computer training is a MCSE.

    It would be simple, whenever one person violates the law, we would turn off all the root name servers and backbone routers for a period of one week. That will effectively stop them from accessing the net.

    You could setup a 486 FreeBSD box to do what he wants in an hour or two. He wouldn't even need to download anything special besides the stable branch iso's. I imagine the same is true for any Linux distro, I just never tried using one as a router.

    You could easily find an IT job in a medium size city (pop between 50,000-250,000) and live about 45 minutes away and be in the country side. PA and New Jersey both have many areas where you could do this and I would assume you could do this in NC, MD, NY as well.

    I majored in BIS and the programming is easier then Comp Sci no doubt. But I still had many programming courses and if you can't get through the intro class you won't be able to get through the database and advanced programming classes. BIS focuses on applications for Business use while Comp Sci focus deeper into the Computer architecture. The programming courses I took were much more difficult then intro courses which start out with things like hello world and sorting arrays.

    According to netcraft 2 million active sites are hosted by FreeBSD and there are almost 4 million host names on FreeBSD.

    I would think that the smaller Sparc machines would perform just as well as x86 Linux machines as long as the applications they were running depended on memory more than processing power.

    I highly doubt the G5 is as fast as either chip as well. The Opteron can be setup in 8 way and 4 way smp mode, I think the G5 can only go up to 2 way.

    While I am not happy with jobs being offshored, I can tell you there are some jobs that will never go offshore, because it is impossible. For example if I need a well drilled because my well went dry somebody in Asia isn't going to be able to do that for me. I don't think somebody in India is going to be my real estate agent from thousands of miles away. Knowledge jobs and manufactoring can be put anywhere, but many service and meet and greet jobs can not go overseas. Unless you

    Most games at sites like yahoo games and pogo require java and direct you to Sun's Java, some computer oem install it themselves. As far as client side java being dead you are crazy, businesses will still use it and joe user will want to play bejeweled too much to not down a Java VM.

    Do you really think that Java development is what is holding Sun back. Look at their quarterly reports, its low sales in all sectors. They are already turning around and in one or two quarters they will be making a profit again. The Sparc IV release alone will do this. Sun is a complete computing company they don't relie on Java alone, they build systems from the Chip up.
