See... I always knew Mac users were computer terrorists. Just y'all wait, artists schmartists whateva, we got some water-boarding for all ya metro-sexual weed smoking commie asses.
Ok, seriously though, not knowing what a Macbook looks like is really retarded. Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on in the states? Do you guys even go to schools? or grow up inside mine shafts? I mean, geez, if you're checking baggage all day, everyday at an airport, how can you possibly not run into a Macbook at least a few times each week?
wow, you actually replaced parts on a distiller... that's impressive. The testing of biological warfare on citizens is very disturbing. The US is a dangerous place to be.
Yes, the taste of tap water is really quite disgusting, I don't know why people put up with it. Maybe they've never had clean water to begin with, so they don't have a standard for comparison... and the same can be said for security and freedom.
I've been very concerned about the water I'm drinking. I know that bottled spring water is also contaminated by weird chemicals, but I feel like it is much better than municipal water. So, I've been searching for a better source of water.
So far I've been able to find reverse osmosis and distillation products online. It seems like distillation is better. I've found a product that claims to distill the water twice. What if I were to put a good reverse osmosis filter and a double distiller in series (costing about $1500)... anyone know how effective that would be?
There's no way I'm putting a Wi-Fi device on my head. Who knows what all that radiation can do so closely to your head? I don't even use cell phones anymore, because the studies done on radiation are no where near conclusive that it's safe.
Why couldn't they go with an IR interface instead?
I know, I know, lots of nerds think it's safe enough... but until there's more concrete studies showing that this isn't a health hazard (or discredit the studies that show it is hazardous), I don't think it is worth taking the risk with my health (or anyone else).
There have been way too many cases where we have seen things approved by authorities as "safe" (or safe enough), but were later withdrawn because they caused a lot of lives to be lost. More scrutiny about health hazards is needed.
Dude, I know, Perl6 is awesome and all. Look at what I was quoting above. It reads "Some people do not give up even when they do not succeed.Theyrefuse to accept defeat and continue to try even when common sense tells others there's no use in trying."
Basically, I was trying to point out that that line, or actually the whole article is written in a tone that says "people who don't learn from mistakes are stupid, people who don't accept defeat are stupid, people who don't accept common sense are stupid".
And of course I'm sitting back thinking about this... and that sounds like a lot of creative people. It's like saying Einstein was stupid because he didn't accept common sense, or that Ada Lovelace was stupid because she didn't accept defeat. Really, doesn't there seem to be something wrong with this article? I had thought the days of judging peoples' intelligence based on skull size and shape were well behind us.
Think George Bernard Shaw's famous quote: "A reasonable man adapts himself to his environment. An unreasonable man persists in attempting to adapt his environment to suit himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Some people do not give up even when they do not succeed.Theyrefuse to accept defeat and continue to try even when common sense tells others there's no use in trying.
Heh, sounds like just about every activist, inventor, writer, artist or creative person I know!
After 7 years, I suspect this covers the entire Perl6 development team too.
like father, like son (sorry about the gender bias)
Oh no, no need to be sorry, it's true. If women made things like robots for instance, they would be happy and peaceful robots, altruistic and loving, violence would atrophy out of sheer uselessness and in only a few more generations we'd be all be living in ecstatic harmony with the universe and mother nature. I can feel the love already, you just have to believe:-)
the immediate reaction upon hearing the news may be a mixture of various feelings, including excitement, pride, disbelief and satisfaction, but also anxiety.
Geeeeeez
Dude, gimme a break. It's only a database!
I wonder how many people like me were forced to buy it only to wipe the drive and install XP and Ubuntu. There are plenty of companies like Dell where you can't unselect the Windows Vista option when buying their laptop. I know several other people whose computers also came with Vista without them asking and unlike me they actually gave it a fair shot. They all ended up reverting back to XP.
I'd be interested in knowing how many of the 39% actually wanted Vista in the first place and how many kept it.
I thought that when the electric company charged me, they charged me per kilowatt. Something like $0.20 per 1000 watts (per hour, right?). So like, what does this $1/watt mean? Does it mean that coal costs $1/watt (per hour?) that it produces? Then I don't understand how I get electricity for so cheap? And what does it mean when a solar cell produces $1/watt? Does that mean that over its average lifetime it will produce a certain number of watts and that each watt costs $1?
Also, I imagine that with coal there must be slaves shoveling rock somewhere and someone constantly having to shovel stuff into an oven, whereas solar cells just sit there and absorb light, right? Is the energy cost involved in producing solar cells and coal equipment (ovens, trucks?) included in the equations?
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me understand:-)
Look, this person is so daft arrogant as to believe that only 60 people died and a few people got thyroid cancer as a result of the Chernobyl tragedy. Surely no one will take her ludicrous claims seriously, right? Especially not the highly edumacated Slashdot reader, yes?
Her stupidity is bad enough, but what's even worse is that these tabloid-quality articles make it to Slashdot while relevant sci-tech news is to be found on Yahoo instead. Slashdot news ain't werth asswipe these days./. =/shit
Article posted below (because it will expire soon):
LONDON (Reuters) - Every home in Britain could be supplied by wind power alone in 2020 by making full use of the wind-swept seas around the country, Energy Secretary John Hutton said on Monday.
Britain has some of the best wind conditions for generating carbon-free electricity in the world but high construction costs and a sluggish planning process has limited its growth.
There are 8 gigawatts of offshore wind farms planned in the UK, but the government thinks another 25 GW could be added to that by 2020, Hutton said in a statement.
"This potential major expansion will be subject to the outcome of a strategic environmental assessment. But if we could manage to achieve this, by 2020 enough electricity could be generated off our shores to power the equivalent of all of the UK's homes." he said.
"The challenge for government and for industry is to turn this potential - for our energy and economy - into a cost-effective reality. This will be a major challenge."
The government recently streamlined the planning system to help get new energy projects approved more quickly and has changed the way renewable energy is supported to favor offshore wind and wave energy over cheaper onshore wind turbines.
Heh, these days the only comments on slashdot worth reading are the trolls. No really, I'm serious.
People are using the mod privilege to mark up and down what they do or don't agree with, and not what's actually insightful and interesting. I guess when any social environment grows large enough, we get rule of the mob.
Basically, slashdot has become the voice of the most unimaginative middle-of-the-bell-curve conformist wannabe techies. Increasingly I find myself sifting through the lower scores to find original, eccentric, and critical comments.
Yay! Finally! Someone recognizes I'm important! Now, if only I could get a date... Goddess, I just wish there would be a natural disaster and a cute girl for me to save;-)
and I so blown away that I literally shook in my shoes.
Over a computer? Dude, you truly are a geek. In my case women elicit that reaction, but each to their own. I won't judge. Feel free to get married too, you have my approval.
I was just rudely awakened by my manager who strolled on over to the lab after reading this story. Someone should teach Harris Interactive a lesson to let sleeping dogs lie.
Never before have I seen such an abysmal start to an operating system release. For almost a year, people have been adopting Vista and becoming incensed by how poorly it operates.
Heh, the writer is obviously oblivious of Windows 1 and Windows 2, etc.
Ms. Frankenstein. All you need is a breadboard, some LEDs, a battery and some silly putty. The vast majority of people on this planet are completely confused by and terrified of technology; even the ones in the developed world that are totally dependent on it. They are intimidate by Scientist and Engineers and more than a little distrustful of us. A jack-ass stunt like this doesn't help the situation.
Oh whatever. She wasn't pulling off a stunt, she was just wearing a nerdy t-shirt. Think about it. What's next? A fancy iPod knock off? A TI calculator? By this standard any electronic gadget could be considered a prank.
Dude, don't blame her. It's not her fault the security's IQ is somewhere below that of a snail. If it wasn't the t-shirt, it could be someone having an epileptic attack and they'd call that terrorism too! You know we should have limits on how dumb people can be before letting them take on certain jobs in society.
So what if I made a space station and had my little minions fly there first. Just to be sure, the space station would be in orbit around the Sun, not the Earth. Then, once on that space station, terrestrial laws no longer apply, right? From there one could launch a vehicle to the moon. Would that work?
Also, I didn't see any size or weight limits for the people traveling to the moon. So I presume genetic engineering is ok to win the prize. You see, I'm planning to breed people no taller than 18". Should drastically cut down on spacecraft size and weight, as well as fuel and launch expenses.
I looked at the pictures and looks nearly identical to ECE331 when I was in college. I didn't wear the board (NE555 and a couple of caps and resistors), but rather fastened it to my door. I also had a similar shirt, and wore it all the time, except for ECE331, not course 6.
You know Radio Shack used to sell plans for what looks like her 'bomb'.
Oh great, now look what you did! You realize homeland security is watching this? Now Forrest Mims is gonna be getting a visit from the dudes in black!

Anonymous Dimwit, if everything with a few LEDs is an explosive then the entire country should be living in sheer terror. Can we have an IQ test for security please? Where do we get these people, dropouts from Yale?
Meanwhile the real terrorist threats facing America are getting no attention.
We'd all like to pretend that terroism isn't real by Anonymous Coward on Friday September 21, @09:05PM (#20706725)
but, it is. Do we need to panic all the time. No. Do we need to be cautious. Yes. It was a dumb thing to do! If I were one of the guards, I would like to think that I would have done the same thing. Kudos to them for not shooting her. I think they handled the situation exceptionally.
To those who think that they overreacted... go to Iraq and take your time deciding whether or not something like that is a bomb. You won't come back alive.
Dude, you're missing the point. Terrorism is one thing, but this is so obviously just a t-shirt. And even after it is known that she's just wearing a t-shirt, she's being held and charged! By this standard anything is an explosive. Your watch, you calculator, your flashlight, come on, if you're gonna live with that kind of fear then the terrorists have already won!
