I'm of Indian descent, and have had some heart abnormalities since I was 17. I suppose I should be worried about this. On the other hand, they'll be needing more cardiologists in India soon, so I guess that could be a good career path.
Anyhow, I once got a letter from my cardiologist's office informing me that my cardiologist had died of a heart attack. My file has been transferred over to another cardiologist.
I'm not inclined to believe the article, because my experience relates otherwise.
I was using qwerty for years before I switched to dvorak. Despite spending weeks on typing tutor programs, I was never able to touch-type with qwerty. With dvorak, it came naturally after the first week. Also, I developed pain in my fingers and wrists while typing with qwerty, but it eased away and disappeared soon after I started using dvorak.
I feel a lot more comfortable typing with a dvorak keyboard and my typing speed has improved. So, going with my personal experience, I would say that the dvorak keyboard is significantly superior to qwerty.
... this can't be the real story, something else must be going on. Stuff like this just doesn't happen. It can't be all stupidity and ego, right? Something else is afoot.
Just read the article. Generally, he makes sense and I'm happy he started this FSF thing because I'm using a lot of the software today and I like his philosophical ideas.
I think I understand his criticism of open source software. It's not just limited to software development. Corporations use certain dirty tricks to coerce power away from people when they can't have absolute control. From that perspective, I can see rhyme and reason in his philosophy.
In any case, reading a lot of the comments, I'm seeing that people are calling him crazy and irrelevant, etc., but it's kind of hard to avoid that his ideals have led to significant progressive changes in the freedom to use and develop software. I, along with millions benefit from this change. This process needs to continue.
Doubtless, no one is "right" about everything all the time, so that's why, you know, we all have brains to think with. Regardless of whether one agrees with him or not, he does lay out some very well thought out ideas. Personally, I think trashing a person because you don't agree with him is a waste of everyone's time. I'd rather read some real criticisms and perspectives on his philosophy.
Being an idiot, I've learnt a few things about smart folks: Leave them alone!
That's the problem with us stupid people. We keep trying to control, er, I mean help smart people achieve their best.
Your niece seems smart enough, but she needs time to figure out what she wants on her own. Just be there to give her anything she asks or obviously needs. The rest will take care of itself. You can be certain that whatever it is, it won't fall within the realm of your imagination, and certainly not mine.
What should the policy be for handling groups of people with the stated goal of destroying our country?
Another dimwit, another day on slashdot.
No, Iraq did not have the stated goal of destroying your holy benevolent peaceful country. I see that the manual has worked well on you as you seemed to be utterly brainwashed. I know it can be difficult to remember current events let alone analyze when you have an IQ under 12, but Iraq was a moderate Muslim country and viewed Al Qaeda as an extremist threat.
Iraq was concerned with oil prices, fighting a war with Iran, and suppressing internal revolutions lead by the Shi'a and the Kurds. They also agreed to hold elections under pressure just before the US invasion. Lest you forget, Iraq did not have any of the claimed nuclear, chemical, or bio weapons, and the conventional weaponry was aging and in disrepair. They couldn't even go up against Iran, so you can forget about the US. If anything, it is the US and Britain that had a stated goal of destroying Iraq dating back to the 1970s as per later released documents in order to gain full control of the oil.
The beauty of war is that everyone gets something. In this case, I think there is a turn of fate for the US. The act of trying to take control of Iraq has back fired and in a sense if you really think about it, the US has destroyed itself. All those nasty tactics so carefully developed to destroy another? They are now being used on the US population. The act of aggression is coming full circle. The US is abandoning its core founding principles and slowly morphing into Iraq. It's as if the ghost of Iraq now possesses the body of US.
If I were you, I'd be making plans for an exit as soon as possible, or alternatively you could take the ostrich strategy and crawl back under the rock you slithered from.
> > Do we really want a country [that]... has a long history of providing arms to nations/factions it later fights... Taleban against the Russians
> Not Taliban - Mujahideen (a loose group of Afghan warlords and fighters.) The Taliban arose later with support from Pakistan.
Oh I see, when the Russians retreated, Mujahideen decided to go herd sheep and grow coca, while Pakistan put a call out for Taliban members and hordes of angry middle-class euro teens decided to enroll?
Mujahideen is a generic term for Muslim fighters, dumbass. Any of the fighters in any country can be called Mujahideen, has nothing to do specifically with "Afghan warlords and fighters". Translated/interpreted it means "soldier" implied of course in the context of jihad.
When Russia retreated there was a war-torn country left with a traumatized population living under extreme poverty, some of which had a lot of left over weapons (supplied by a nuclear super-power fighting a proxy war). Pray, what type of guvament did you think was going to spring from that? Pakistan has been an Afghan ally before, during, and after Taliban rule. Sheesh, the IQ level on slashdot these days is taking a nosedive. I don't know which is worse, the arrogance of the assholes that post, or the irrelevance of the news.
Another day, another retard who thinks that he can make something work which is proved not to.
Uh, I don't understand how the parent post got modded down. Slashdot moderators are getting stupider and stupider by the day. Can we not have anyone under the IQ of 12 moderating comments? Duh, DRM hasn't worked time and again, and all forms have shown to be easily defeatable. If you can't handle an opinion contrary to your own, quit moderating and go flip burgers, dimwit assholes.
Like, I don't know ANYONE with a quantum computer, and these nerds are making and breaking quantum encryption already? What use is it if no one has the quantum machines to download movies anyway?! Where can I go to get myself an AMD Quantum Processor for under $300, huh?
Seriously though, one day you hear "Quantum Cryptography is UNBREAKABLE!", the next day you hear "Quantum Cryptography BROKEN!", it's just a circus. Can we solve the world hunger crisis first, anyone?! Sheesh.
Can we make it even better? How about we kill off say 5 billion humans, anyone who doesn't have internet access for example (since they're not likely to read this and wouldn't know of the mass genocide being planned against them online). How would that effect the biosphere? Will 5 billion cadavers make for good fertilizer?
Those are market prices on a T1, not the cost of DSL. We here in Canada have plenty of fiber to go around for everyone and then some. Certainly the advertised DSL at 5Mbps/800Kbps is feasible for everyone and the smaller companies have shown that to be true year in and year out.
This isn't a case of ISPs overselling bandwidth, it's Ma Bell not wanting to share the pie with ISPs.
I happen to be a TekSavvy customer and their service has been flawless in maintaining capacity for years (that is, before Bell choked the line). We have plenty of fiber in Canada and a large portion of it is still dark. The fiber that isn't dark is nowhere near capacity. In addition, small companies like TekSavvy have clearly shown that they can sell and maintain their advertised bandwidth at low prices.
So where is the problem? IPTV is a very promising, large and emerging market. Bell is smelling the green and they just happen to be at the switches of some routers. Legal or not there is a whole whack of cash to be made and they ain't about to allow anyone near it until they've got the market all sewn up.
Oh give me a break. The network is nowhere near saturated even during peak hours and with the amount of fiber around it won't be for years to come. These are all blatant lies lies lies. What did you think they were going to say? That there is a multi-billion dollar IPTV market at stake and that torrent traffic presents a threat as does competition from smaller companies?
They're out to get first dibs on an emerging, large, and very promising market. The smaller ones can pick up scraps later.... if ever.
"Chief Dyer wants to get legislation passed that would make RateMyCop.com illegal, which, of course, wouldn't pass constitutional muster in any court in America."
Oh, come now, that's just self-delusional stupidity. The upper echelons of power in the US have near complete control over their common people. If it ever becomes necessary to change legislation to make sites like RateMyCop.com or any other public accountability tool illegal, they will do it without much effort. It would be a trivial matter, and the common people are so docile and domesticated that it would barely be noticed.

Bought four 320GB Seagate Drives last year....
Two are already dead.
Going with WD 1TB drives for now.

Stuff like this just doesn't happen.

Conspiracy theorists... where are you?
Damn, where was this kid when I was in garde 2? Could have used some pointers :-)
... like that's news?
Slashdot: News that mattered.
I've been saying that all along! Nobody ever believes me!

Unquestionably, the greatest science hoax ever is this one.
What low-life idiotic McDonald's patron modded the parent post as troll?
A woman and a child also died as a result of what happened. That is very sad news.
Many people believe aliens exist, many people don't.
It's been like this for generations.
One of them happens to be an astronaut.
Big deal.

The challenge is nothing more than a crossword puzzle after lunch.
