We made something like this some years ago. We submerged a MB in oil and put the whole thing in a freezer. It worked great, until the oil penetrated in between the pci card slots (yes, it was an old computer)and MB. This also affected the ram slots. This made the electrical connection between ramMB and pciMB pretty useless after a while, effectively shutting the thing down. We soldered the ram and pci cards to the motherboard, and this solved the problem.
We toyed with this idea when I was a the uni some years ago. Placing a huge coil in a tunnel barrel that has downwards moving traffic. Instead of having to apply the brakes, cars and trailers would be slowed down by creating energy in the coil. I seem to remember we were quite drunk at the time.
Then it's nearly impossible to watch a TV show or movie and not be constantly rolling your eyes. It's really hard to suspend disbelief when Jennifer Garner's semi-auto PISTOL runs out of ammo and then CLICKS when she pulls the trigger. The goddamn slide locks back, Hollywood assholes! Clicking only happens with revolvers! No it doesn't! There's lots of DAO (double action only) and DA/SA (double action/single action) pistols out there. You can dry-click with many pistols. Allthough, if the slide is locked back, the hammer will usually be locked . Far from all brands of pistols lock the slide though.
Say what you want, but pranks and happenings such as these really spice up the students days and I love reading about them. We used to do similar pranks when I was studying, several made it to the news. Our favourites included installing elevator music in the elevators, bashing the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology students (we were electronics) and their train (they had one train, we had one on tracks that actually works). One night we made two "full size" garden gnomes out of paper mache and placed them on two readily available points. We made the news in several newspapers for that. See the pics here http://www.dagbladet.no/kultur/2004/06/24/401413.h tml?i=1 16 pictures total.
On one hand, I want to see the movie. On the other hand, I'm so very, very afraid that it will be this bad. And if it is, it will seriously affect me because I really care about DNA's stuff. I know I will see it eventually, as I've soaked up all the previous stuff made by DNA. One can only hope... Anyway, I'll bring my towel to the theater.
I find it really exciting that they took the bother to include a sonic probe on the lander. Cool to hear offworld sounds, even if it's full of static and noise.
I was really disappointed when I heard no Star Trek "tingling" atmosphere noises, though...
Hey!
Great articles. Now I can finally flame the people I work with that are fanatics about drinking water. One of them actually carries around a 1.5L bottle with water around, and it looks a bit weird.
I KNEW I was right.;)

I remember hearing about this when I was like, 7-8 years old. I'm now 28.
