  1. so what? on FCC: Only We Can Regulate Unlicensed Spectrum · · Score: 1, Informative

how much does it cost to monitor and enforce the right?

if FCC has not limited the number of access points that one man can have, the landlord can muscle out its tenant's right easily. Just install as many APs as possible.

we need more geeky lawyers... new jobs!!! :-P

  2. Re:why people will pay on NYT: Making Free Wireless Wi-Fi Internet Pay · · Score: 0

It is much harder to guarantee Reliability and Convenience for WiFi than for cellular. Why? A cellular tower can cover an area with a diameter of a couple of miles. A WiFi can only cover a few hundred feet. So, you need more WiFi access points and, thus, increase the cost (tech support, maintain, legal). Note that the equipement cost of both cellular systems and WiFi systems are almost negligible in reality. Consequently, it is will be very costy to achieve the same performance as in Verizon's ad ("Can you hear me now? good.")

Speed is not an issue for most WiFi system. Personally, I know that some startup companies with tens of people using DSL or cable. In this case, they are sharing a link much slower than that 802.11 can offer.

Security is very artificial, IMHO. I have not yet heard that any one made big $$ illegally through breaking WiFi security. The bottom line is that it is hard to capture any useful information over the thin air especially from high speed data connections.

Overall, I believe that the spectrum will be free regardless we like it or not. Free WiFi will come true regardless how many people want to make $$$. If someone wants Benz quality wireless service, let it be.

Personally, I am not sure that this article got a good view on the overall issue. The period when the number of sci. publications declined in US is the same one that IT bubble was booming. So, effectively, we can see the impact of economic behavior on scientific research. Surely, I would tend to accept that with new communication and publication technology, the dominance of US will disappear. However, it would not have been so dramatic in the last decade if a huge amount of resource did not go to the IT sector.

Even though the problems related to outsourcing rooted deeply in the economy and the society, there is a fundamental change in the philosophy of life!

Since various jobs rely on computers and have less constraint on labor, it effectively put both young and old people in the same market. Thus, the population of the work force is getting larger. Then, will someone complain that jobs for young people are "outsourcing" to elders.

At the age of internet, the cost of acquiring knowledge and skills keeps dropping. Consequently, it will be hard for person to earn his/her own living soly on an "easy" skill.

The major issue in a modern country is that kids must be taught that it is hard to earn a living! It is always too painful and too late to realize that for an adult.

Given the new generation of wireless technology, neighbors can share their subscribed channels over the thin air. So, $3 per channel is ok for any one unless cable companies charge $100 per channel.
