Not everything has to be about robots! When I was in Elementary and Middle Schools I was in a program called Odyssey of the Mind. This was a great program, with teams of 7 students, who would comptete in both a long and short program. For the long program (8 minutes), the team had a few months and a limited budget, and was allowed to choose one of the 5 problems to solve, Here are Last Years. There was alao a short program, where you were given a set of supplies, 1 min to brainstorm, and then 3 minutes to do it. Usually this challenge took the form of building something, such as the tallest twoer you could with toothpicks and shaving cream, that could survive a 5mph wind, something like that. It was a great program, and wasn't limited to engneering tyes. There a programs like both OM and US FIRST, or the new robot wars in a lot of communitites, and whether you like their current format or not, we should all get involved. Many of us complain about the current state of education, and I have already seen people complaining about schools, and thanking vouchers. If you think these programs are great, get involved! If not get involved anyway and bring your experiences and incites to a younger group. -OctaneZ
I hope they're not using normal glass, which is technically a liquid. Look at windows in colonial houses; their bottom is thicker than their top.
Actually this does not have to do with the time that the window has been up in a house, eg: ~400 years. Rather it has to do with the way that the glass was poured and then installed.
3)The temperature at which a rigid glass becomes a supercooled liquid is called the glass transition temperature, Tg. For window glass, Tg (measured) is 550 degrees C. For the limiting case of infinite time the thermodynamically calculated ideal glass transition state Tg(0) for window glass is 270 degrees C. For Pyrex the values are 550 and 350 deg., respectively. [This allone should be enough to put to rest any argument for the liquid properties of glass at room temperature (which rarely gets above 50 degrees C).
"Glass" may not survive 50k years, but it won't be because it sagged.
Daft Punk have FAR more than 2 (or 3 albums!) * Da Funk / Rollin' & Scratchin' * Indo Silver Club * Homework (A Great Album) * Da Funk / Musique * Discovery (A pop-y piece fo crap)
As well as MANY singles and remixes
Despite being "Clear Channel Favorites" All three of these groups produced excellent albums. While they may appear to be sell-outs. Crytsal Method's Vegas is an album I will listen to forever, as a matter of fact it is currently in my player. Lo-Fi had one US "Hit", Battleflag, and I wouldn't even go as far as to say that. Prodigy had a number of mainstream hits, that does not however make them a bad group; break out "The Prodigy Experience" of even "fat of the land" they are a great group. You should also give them all credit for brining an electronic sound to an audience that would not have otherwise heard it or gone looking.
without a doubt check out: Faithless Hybrid and absuolutley amazing group Timo Maas OMG! An amazing artist!
but really just listen to a lot and decide what you like. one great thing about this type of music is there is a lot of collaboration between artists, so you can get some really neat crossovers and sounds.
That $1 million-plus bill for Amalthea imaging is based on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory maintaining Galileo's 12-member science team and data distribution system for another year (during much of which they would be idle).
But this, strictly speaking, is not required. The science team does not have to be on hand, and distribution and analysis of the photos could easily be delayed, with the photos simply being stored for later distribution to scientists.
So it does NOT in fact cost THAT much to take the pictures, while it does not mention the ACTUAL cost, we are lead to beleive they are considerably lower than the cost of maintaining the entire team for another year. I also have to agree with the article and wonder why they would need to be "live" for the year, when it seems this could be laid out, at least in gross detail now, and then fogotten until a week or two before. Correct me if I am wrong, as I have only ever used satellites in earth orbit with multiple-daily dumps.
While a western governement would improve the situation, the leadership alone is not to blame. I agree with you that many leaders in these countries have done little for their people. However I am not wrong in saying that the resources in these countries SHOULD and do (when not aided from outside sources) limit the population in the area. A population of westerners would fair far worse under the circumstances, as they would have no knowledge of the land, and not recognize what few resources there were.
The truth is that those countries are overpopulated based on their own resources and require outside assistance from countries like the US.
This is completely True, These countries, and many more, are overpopulated, and "Aid from the US" is NOT helping. Sure it may make us feel good to think that we are feeding a starving individual, but in truth we are exacerbating the problem. These people live in a land that CANNOT support them. Yes I know we are working on things like miracle rice, and irrigation, but those are not so1lutions.
Water will soon come to the forefront as a tradeable limited commodity on the open market, there simply is not enough of it to go around, and irrigation is not a good use for what we have.
By preserving this individual you are allowing them (and I know this sounds really bad to many of you) to have children, thus continuing the famine for another generation. While it may not seem like a pleasent idea, all species (except humans in western cases) will reach equilibrium with there environment if "nature" is allowed to run it's course.
We have overextended ourselves as a species, and while technology has done it's best to keep us afloat we are dangerously over our carrying capacity on this planet.
You received the option to turn them off, by paying for the content! While people may no like it, it is a viable alternative to the pay model. I am liking the way they have done it, leaving the options open to all. You can subscribe or not, entirely up to you. But you DO have the choice, even if you don't like it.
In the last month Anandtech had begun reviewing laptops with the same rigor with which they approach everything else! While they have only covered 3 laptops so far, I think the reviews are exactly what a technical person wants to read when they are trying to make an educated decision.
They have covered the: Asus T9 Toshiba Satellite
and just today: WinBook N4
I am really glad to see someone as trusted at Anand filling this niche!

I can't say enough good things about AdAware, I have recommeneded it or installed it on all of my friends machines (who for all intents and purposes I support). NEarly every "average" user has installed something that came with spyware. Some people noticed marked improvements in their systems speed after having 20-30 spyware aps removed. AdAware is developed by Lava Soft. -OZ
The fact that they CAN and apparently are willing to use pulling their "premiere" product from the market place, I think, shows that they know they are a monopoly. They are essentially thumbing their noses and saying, it's our way or the highway; and while wo know there ARE in fact alternatives, it is not feasible, nor is it plausible, to have the entire world switch away from Microsoft. Yet the fact that they can leverage their monoplolistic stronghold in their own antitrust trial is amazing!
just my 2 cents

Though federal law only requires the consent of one person before a telephone call or Internet communication can be recorded, Pennsylvania and 11 other states require the consent of all parties.
So it is not simply that one participant alowed the police to view the logs. Unless we are taking as a presuming that everyone assumes that all conversations are recorded/logged by both parties. While agree that the topic may be a little misleading, this is also going to be an interesting case to follow.
An interesting turn would be if the court ruled that the girl logging (if that is in fact what was turned over) was a violoation of the other users privacy right as he did not consent to her logging the conversation.
As a proud owner of the first book I can say it is quite nice to be able to take BOFH with you anywhere you go (aside from the ones on your PDA). The books, both I and II can be purchased from Plan 9 Publishing from THISpage. Enjoy your reading, and remember only use one excuse card a day! (don't want to run out before the end of the year)
There was discussion of final scratch back in mid-December when a user submitted a story about the DM2 and it's possible use fun/cheap music toy. This discussion in Ask Slashdot lead to other products being borught up as well, and some inciteful comments. Check out the Story.
Yeah, if they really want to stop bandwidth hogs, why did they not just make the Cable modem also be a bandwidth limiter!!!!!
THEY DID!
Many users of cable systems are bandwidth limited, also called "capping," on at least their outbound traffic, and many also have their inbound traffic limited as well. Where I live RoadRunner has outbound speeds limited from 15k to 30k/s outgoing, depending on which loop you are on. Incoming is limited to 250k/s, though this is almost never achieved, even when the packets are originating at a major university, essentially, across the street, with only 4 hops between one box and the other.
Found this so amusing that it had to be posted in main thread:

Warn hubs@FreeBSD.org
Heads up email to hubs@FreeBSD.org to give admins time to prepare for the load spike to come.
/. ought to bring the spike in a little early. Also not that the packages aren't going to the ftp masters until tomorrow, the 25th, and the announcment and mirroring will occur on the 26th. Just a couple more days to wait for the next step in this great OS.
I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the article or in another thread, so here we go. The base price (the player+accessories but no CF card) is only $109 directly from them! You can see all of the different options at their Yahoo! Store. it looks pretty neat, and if you combine this with the seemingly endless deals on Compact Flash cards that can be found (try AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum) this could be a great player. -OctaneZ
We all know countless stories have come from pillow talk. A tryst between a reporter and a govermental official is not unheard of, though I am not sure you could get away with it on a government airplane. Perhaps they were hoping to eavesdrop on the President recounting his day to his wife, you never know what night get said. Just a thought. -OctaneZ
WHile you're post doesn't say what kind of distribution you are looking for, it may be easier to sell you boss on a commercial solution that sells specialized distributions. does just that, I have never used their products, there are some reviews out there, linux journal has a review of the web server, Linux Mag loved The Web Server, Thick Book has a review of The Firewall (run through google to avoid PDF), as does Linux World.
Not all MP3 player companies are using the ASIC MP3 decoders. iRiver the company that produces the CD MP3 players that Rio rebrands as their own is using ARM processors and is actively developing Ogg support for their players.
Thier New Player the SlimX is really quite neat looking, some pictures are provided here.
If you are looking for discussions about MP3/etc players I recoment MP3's Portables message board.
For those of you who have never seen a BeBox there is a picture of one can be found HERE on the auction page. They are really cool looking. You can see the LED strips up the front legs, in the picture CPU0 is lighting one LED and CPU1 is lighting 2 LEDs.

There is a python based linux client available at:

I have not used this service, only puttin git out there for you to try and decide for yourself.
There are many great Electonic bands that span many genres, electronic is not just dance.

A Guy Called Gerald
Aphrodite
The older Daft Punk albums are great
Groove Armada
The Classics:
Lo-Fidelity Allstars
The group that brought electronic to the masses The Crystal Method
MC 900 Ft Jesus (sorry couldn't find a better link)
The Prodigy
For a more layed back sound check out:

yes, so does a limitless supply of capital and goods from the US that makes it possible.

Shouldn't this really be in Ask Slashdot?
Paying around $50 a month and get around 200kbps down and capped at ~35kbps out.
