  1. Next noise target on Pentium M Goes SFF · · Score: 2, Insightful

So, as the review points out that the loudest thing in the system was the video card, are there any current video cards that can be passively cooled? I'd've thought that with PCs becoming 'home entertainment systems' that there'd be more of a move toward fanless/silent systems.

Excellent call on the subject there, I'm assuming a reference to Delia Derbyshire from the BBC radiophonic workshop? Apparently had the longest tape loop seen till then for the background loop. Out of the room and back down the corridor.

For people who don't know, go here for more information. There was a good program on BBC Radio4 a while back, she sounded like a great person.

Sorry, bad form I know, replying to ones own post, but I thought it might also be useful to post the blurb from the You and Yours site:
PATENTS In America patent law is being exploited by some people who register patents they had no part in inventing - and then demand large amounts of money as a license from anyone using that technology. The European Commission is considering how to stop such abuse happening this side of the Atlantic
  5. Hitting mainstream media on Report Says Patents Threaten Software Innovation · · Score: 2, Informative
There was a bit of a discussion about software patents on the BBC Radio4 program 'You and Yours' yesterday.

You can listen to it if you want to. But I think that if it's getting time on a mid-morning general interest program then people must be becoming more aware of software patents and the problems they might cause.

Probably best to go read Sun's paper on the topic.

From the above comments, I think they're more worried about software patents than a little local difficulty (apologies to Muenchen). Yes, this puts oss in a bad light for the moment, but if it helps stop software patents down the line then it'll probably be worth it. If software patents aren't stopped then the points raised will suddenly become true and oss is in trouble.

I haven't read the DMCA, but the article says:
Real said Monday its engineers worked out a way for its files to be compatible with iPod solely through analysis of publicly-available information.

Wouldn't any security measures require that you can't break it using public information. If you can break it using public information then it's not really secure, hence Real aren't breaking any copy protection stuff.

Anyway, I like the sound of having more control over personal equipment.

  11. ot - CF card should be ok on How To Lose An Election · · Score: 1

I'm pretty certain that the CF card should be fine. They're sensitive to static, but not magnetic fields. Although I'm not sure what'd happen if you put one in an MRI machine, normal magnets (even those from inside a hard drive) should be ok. Unless of course it's a microdrive, in which case there may be a problem. But even in that case there are some pretty strong magnets inside the microdrive.

Article says it'll actually be for anything above a 650MHz P3. To quote:
The current version of the defense authorization act would lower that limit to systems deemed "militarily critical" by the Department of Defense. That level is currently set to the equivalent of a computer using a Pentium 3 processor running at 650MHz, state of the art in 1999 but considered feeble today.
At least my 500MHz K7 will slip beneath the net, but it does mean I won't be able to run nuke@home.

I'm depressed about that feeble comment though.

    From the article:

"Mac OS X dynamically adjusts the flow of the fluid and the speed of the fans based on temperature."

I suspect you can set a maximum temperature and the system will try to keep the system temperature down to that limit (as many small x86 pcs do).

I suppose that if the cpu gets hotter then the fan speed will increase. This would cool the liquid down faster so it could be returned to the cpu end sooner. That makes sense, I think. I think the shuttle heat pipes work with convection currents, so no pump. I'dve thought Apple would do the same, but that's not what their article says.

Of course the article is marketing material, so it could be unintentionally misleading.
