Does anybody have some resources on doing this? How far down can I underclock a chip? How much of a difference does it make? How about notebook chips? etc...

I've read a lot on things like flower coolers, silent power supplies, hd enclosures, etc, but I've never ran across any good info on underclocking. I wouldn't mind spending a bit extra for a faster chip so I could underclock and have a quiet system. My 1.4 athlon is loud and plenty fast (heck my 667 g4 is fast enough for me). I wouldn't mind my next pc being a 2.5ghz system run at 2ghz or something, but silent.

Yah, it's tall, it's been tested, and it's pretty simple. It's made out of almost all glass, concrete, and some steel. Stick these puppies out in the desert where nobody is anyway. Like in Australia and the southwestern US (*cough* california power problems).

Yes, you're going to have some problems with cloudy days, so accept that there are going to be some days when you're not going to get much power out. So make sure you use the extra electric on good days to make lots of hydrogen. That way we can move a source of energy around the country to places that may have trouble with this type of power (new england for example). You could also fire up some fuel cells to make electric out of said stored up hydrogen when the days are nasty.

    So umm... why not?

What's the penalty on breaking the lease? If they're paying $500k/month on a place, and breaking the least costs them 3 million, and they can get by with a place that costs 75k/month (keep key staff in the office, journalists can work from home), what not break it? The $475k/month savings would pay for the breaking of the lease in less than a year. I'm just picking numbers out of the air, but who knows...

The point is, the tech is there to build a car with insane torque like you mentioned, but nobody has done it. I do remember mention of some sort of honda sporty hybrid concept car, but I can't remember any details.

It seems like if you want to get good fuel economy you have to buy a car that takes 3 minutes to get to 60 mph, and handles like a shopping cart. I don't want an SUV (ford has a new hybrid suv) nor do I want an econobox. I want a car that has similar performance and styling to something like an celica/rsx type S/tiberon v6/accord v6/new edge cougar v6 (which I currently drive). Oh, and remembering the market, it must be below $25k. Ideally around $20k. (My Cougar was $18k loaded) Heck, I'd even settle for a 4 door sport sedan.

Yes, I'd even be willing to give up my beloved 5 speed gear box for this. 40mpg city in a fastish car would be nice. C'mon car makers, what's the deal?

Things like normal house related stuff, theft, fire, flood, etc. Is covered under your homeowners usually. There is usually a limit though. For pricier stuff you can usually get an add on to your policy to cover it. I pay an extra $40 a year to have $3000 of coverage on my powerbook. It pretty much covers anything. I really made sure of that when I bought the policy. "So if a kid runs into me at the airport in Mexico, and the laptop flies out of my hands, under the wheels of one of those airport golf carts, gets crushed, and then confiscated by the men in black and eaten by a dog, am I covered?" And he said yes.

So it would be a good idea to check with your insurance company about coverage, especially if you have a laptop.

Most of the 'MIS' type stuff in the military is allready windows. Your desktop computer, fileserver, etc will probobly run NT. Some apps for specialized stuff runs on unix though (JCALS for example). But none of it critical for fighting a war, just time saving stuff.

Mission critical stuff on the other hand is another story. At least in the air force, it's whatever works best for the job. VMS, Solaris, random embeded operating systems, etc. That's the important stuff, and the policy should stay the same. I'd prefer to trust my life to what works best. That said, I somehow doubt key systems will go with the stupid windows policy. Allthough the stuff about the air craft carier (or was it a destroyer, I dunno) and windows crashing it was kinda scary. Don't expect to see a fighter or tracking system or crypto com system running windows any time soon in the air force though.

As far as net access, unless you're on a remote tour without a computer of your own, you'll be responsable for your own net connection/pc. The dorm I lived in 5 years ago (I'm seperated now) had cable modem support. DSL was added just after I moved out of there.

Lots of books written by people smarter than me will back this up. If they say they can bring in somebody else who can write the code right without a design/test phase, they're lying to them.

Despite tough times, things still need to be grounded in reality. They need to get over it and do the right thing, or can the project. The customers aren't going to care about the site reflecting bad on YOU, it'll reflect bad on the COMPANY.

The reality is you probobly won't learn enough VMS in 4 days to secure it up right. This comes from somebody who spent 4 years with a large vax cluster. VMS is a pretty cool os, and you'll learn enough to use in a few days, but secure something requires you knowing the ins and outs of it, something that only comes with experience.

I know jack about AS/400, I know I could probobly be a proficient user in 4 days, and maybe even a relativly good admin in a few weeks, but to feel like a did a good job securing it would take a lot longer.

This is someplace where it actually is a good idea to pay a consultant a ton of money. Specialized skills (like VMS these days) are hard to come by. A consultant who specializes in vms will have the experience to help.

That is, unless you have a member of your team who knows what they're doing allready. An extra set of eyes with a fresh perspective, and a good understanding of the existing use of the cluster will help the experienced (and maybe slightly complacent) vms guru with his/her job.
