John Dvorak used to be a professional Mercutio, sniping left and right, but usually accomplishing something interesting along the way.
In recent years, he has become a professional internet Troll. He knows that he can get a lot of page views by saying things to inflame passionate groups (Mac users, OpenSource advocated, etc.) and he does so at every opportunity.
My advice for you is the same as with any other Troll: Do Not Feed.
Here's the meat: Maureen O'Gara's bylined material will no longer appear anywhere in the Sys-con universe of sites or publications.
That's a pretty damn narrow promise. It says they will never put her name on another article again. Why not just say they will never publish an article by her again? Because they want to continue publishing her under other names, and allow her to stay on as an editor.
I have to admit, I came into this knowing nothing, and still know nothing... but come on, that line alone is sophistry at its most transparent. Plenty of words, promising nothing of substance.
A government that feels it must force it's people, by law, to carry identification is verging on tyranny. Why should our country (all of us) feel the need to track our people (all of us) in such a distrustful manner?
So, this team used to be a secret, but is now official. In other words, MS has taken their astroturfing efforts and tried to legitimize them. Wonderful.
Sometimes, we *should* use non-Free software, if it is better. The point should be that Free software can compete on its own merits, not out of pure unfounded religious conviction.
Because they want to keep their third-party device providers happy. Apple can make a cut of every single device, or they can create a bunch of their own, at great risk, and piss off the Griffin and Belkin's of the world. Which would you do?
I am curious whether there is a plan for an extended or "director's cut" of this movie.
We have heard a lot about scenes being in and out of various cuts, suggesting that many of the things long-time fans will miss in this movie may have been filmed.
So, my join questions: Are there plans in place to have an extended cut? and Are there any particular scenes that come to mind that you believe should be added back in?
Moore's Law has held for forty years because it was a benchmark, not because it was an amazing prediction.
There was no need to grow faster than the law, and plenty of reason to try to keep up with it. That creates equilibrium right around where the law "predicts" growth will lie.
Should researchers decide that Moore's Law is no longer relevant, then growth will slow. Should they decide it could still be achieved, more resources will be put into doing so, and it will.
Personally, I predict the Law will continue to function as ever. It may be harder for researchers to keep up with it in ten years than it is now, but I am sure the difficulty of matching its pace has varied back and forth since its inception.

No, this is Wednesday. Slashdot is Socialist on Wednesday and Thursday. We're Capitalist on Friday through Monday. Tuesday always confuses me.

It's spelled "Ni".

To heck with that! When do we get to start using the word "Beleaguered"?
I bet dollars to donuts you don't feel the same about him after his next big headline.
Or, in this case, probably modded-up.
I haven't seen American Graffiti. THX-1138 was a serious stinker.
He isn't a great filmmaker. He isn't even a passable mass-market filmmaker. He's a guy who made a cult hit that happened to be a global hit.
And then he made a series with Spielberg.

I for one welcome our Open Source overlords.
I am guessing you have a Massachusetts drivers license?
In the end, the Cyclops got stabbed in its one big eye, by a little man known for his resourcefulness.
It could be worse. He changed his name when he moved to the US. His birth certificate says "Sod".
Apple will sell more iPods next quarter than they did this quarter. You heard it here first, folks. ;)

Er. Note that his list comes from user discussion. That one was probably in response to "stupid republican quotes widget".

It's so hard to see astronauts moving on to hard drugs.
Corn isn't a fruit you fool! ;)
Anyone coughing up half a grand every time a new version comes out is an idiot. They always offer an upgrade for about $150.
Microsoft really named their answer to Apple's Aqua UI "Aero"? Isn't that a little transparent as ripoffs go?
