Next-generation 5G mobile internet technology marks the beginning of the "fourth industrial revolution," the chief executive of Turkey's leading telecoms player told CNBC on Thursday
Well if a Chief Executive of a Telecom said it, then it must be . . . . . . nothing but marketing hype.
Now I can tell other drivers exactly what I think of their driving skills over their radio; because you know this is going to be hacked in like an hour after the first one is sold.
A hosts file is a local copy of site urls to ip addresses. When the web page delivers scripts/ad sites they are urls in the page that need to be looked up for ip addresses to make a tcp/ip connection to. The browser first makes a system call that checks the memory cache and if there is a miss it checks this hosts file for a matching entry. If that is a miss the request if forwarded to your isp or dns provider and so on until you get an answer back. Now if you put in script/ad site urls in your local host file and set the resulting ip to 127.0.0.1 (you local machine) or better yet 0.0.0.0 (invalid ip), when the browser makes the request to that site url it gets your fake ip and the call immediately fails and no script/ad is loaded.
Since this is how each request is made there is no extra processing a plugin has to do. Of course this fails if the scripts/ads are coming from the same site, then yes plug-ins work for this. My suggestion, do both and the web will seem so much faster.
Every time I hear the news try to pin the blame of the election results on "Russian Hackers" I can't help thinking of that scene in She Devil. The one where Bob is meeting with his lawyers who advise him to claim that hackers broke into his computer and committed the fraud knowing they will get the easy judge, but instead the judges are switched and it back fires on him.
The whole thing smells to high heaven. Take the warnings by the FBI to the DNC. If they knew the hacks were going on, then they must have had some monitoring agents already installed (at the ISP or locally) which tipped them off, or they were the ones carrying out the attacks running them through Russian nodes to conceal the source and keep plausible denial ability.
Seriously though, She lost, move on DNC and stop trying to start a war over this.
This isn't something that Trump championed through, this was an existing idea that finally received approval.
The real headline should be: "Office of the President now able to send unblockable mass text message to all Americans".
I don't like the guy just as much as the next person (and I don't like Hillary either), but slashdot needs to stop throwing his name out there for a reaction.
Why all of the sudden is there so much fuss over fake news? Growing up I was always told to believe only half of what I see, hear, or read from any news source. The real trick was knowing which half to believe. Granted I would modify this to about 10% now, still the idea is that all media should be treated as suspect, look for the source and who has something to gain or loose from the story, then judge the worth of the news. Still sound advice.
Now I get the whole notion that fake news stories are suppose to have thrown the election, but really. I can't think of one person I came into contact within months prior to the election who didn't already know who they were voting for and nothing was going to change their minds. Also, looking at how the nation voted broken down into regions shows exactly what I would expect, heavily populated areas on the coast would vote for liberal policies, these would also be the people most likely to get their news from online sources. The parts of the county that have more conservative views and tend to spend as much time online voted as expected. So how is it possible that those that would be effected the most by bad news still voted for liberal politics and that gave the election to the conservatives?
Sorry, the only thing I see is that the current controlling party is trying to wedge an even further gap between the media and the public so that anything can be called a lie and nobody will doubt the claim.
No, the election was won or lost because someone didn't realize that this is a democratic "Republic", we the people of a state choose those that will represent us as a state. This is the very reason we have the House and the Senate. In the House each person has an equal say, but in the Senate each state has an equal say, in the end both branches must agree for something to pass. If this weren't the case then states with large populations could pass unfair laws that affected other states with no recourse; and if only states mattered then a large number of states could pass legislation that targets states with large populations and not them. So the election was won or lost because someone didn't understand that concept and only targeted the largest populations, not the largest representation.
Geektavist's don't need the cash, since they (we) control the flow of cash they (we) can deprive the use of it. Think about it, Adobe won't be doing any business if all of the sudden all of their bank accounts show a negative balance or if the electric company doesn't recieve a payment. Geektavist's can even go further and shut down the systems they depend on to make all that cash. Something as simple as shutting down the phone lines or black holing their company would do the trick.
They'd (we'd) rather the politicians see the light on their own but if a few interuptions are needed then so be it. Of course there are the morality issues, but after a while of injustice people will find the moral reasons.
Funny my Direct TV box is hooked up to my tv through a coax connection (it's an old tv and that is all it has). The picture is better than my room mates tv which is hooked up through the rca composite connection.
Of course I do use RG-6 cable, but I also hooked my room mates tv up with a monster composite cable so who knows. My box does have s-video output, which is routed through the vcr and then the computer (awesome picture on the computer), can't wait to buy a tv with a s-video input.
If your talking about Black & White why use a physical device, a netcam would be awesome. The moving around would be odd but casting spells would be cool. Maybe a two camera system could be put together to capture real 3-D movement, something I don't expect to see for quite a while.
Now if yout talking about 3rd person shooters, I love the strategic commander and a mouse. You physically can move the device to move about in the world and with two programmable buttons under each finger you can easly select weapons, jump, reload and whatever fills your heart with glee. Then I use the mouse to look/aim the weapons. I also like to use a wireless mouse and keyboard, it's always nice to be able to move the mouse clear across the desk without every having to pick it up or tug on the cord for slack. Another advantage with the strategic commander I often put the keyboard on top of the computer or monitor, don't need it because you can just program one of the buttons on the commander to do whatever you need to, no large clunky keyboard in your way (leaving plenty of room for soda and chips)! Now if they only made a wireless commander I'd be set!
I have had a "Hello World" generate a GPF on a winders box so I'm not sure every "Hello Wold" program is safe. I doubt it was the cout "Hello World" endl; that did it but all the other error checking put in the code by your friendly neighborhood winders compiler. But to winders credit after a reboot it did work.
I've found that I don't really mind taking my tower case to lan parties, I have a small hand cart for that, it's the monitor that's the problem.
Even though I only have a 17" it's big, heavy and doesn't fit on the hand card. I should also say that I carry two shoulder bags, one with my keyboard/mouse/force commander/joystick and cables, the other one has my surround speakers and network cables/crimping tools/screw drivers. I can typically carry this in just one load but the monitor takes a second trip, it would be nice to have a flat screen monitor but there just out of a college student's price range.
A powerful laptop would be nice, but with limited upgrade and poor video peformance I'll stick with a full computer with lots of upgrade potential.
Wasn't the lawsuit about keep a list of copywrited names? I agree bands do have a copywrite to their song titles/band names but they don't have a copywrite to ritneyBay pearsSay. Anyway I'll just use napigator napster is pretty much dead right now anyway. There are plenty of napigator servers out there still serving up tons of good song names for me to search through.
I wonder what RIAA will try next? They'll probably try and take down "buy" or "amazon" for listing cd's on their site.
Isn't acceleration and decceleration going to be a problem? I mean even if they accelerated at 1G half the way there and deccelerated at 1G the other half it would still take quite a while to reach mars, not to mention sustaining a constant 1G acceleration would be a feat in itself.
Although, it's still not a bad idea. If the fuel is lighter it's just more supplies you could carry. It's also less stuff you have to get into space in the first place.
If you want to help out some techies, why not set up a scholarship fund at your favorite college or university? Being a poor starving student I know I could have used a few hundred to pay for books. You might even consider setting up a women's fund to help correct the gender imbalance in the computer science field, also it would be nice to have a girl or two in a few of my classes.
I'm waiting to see if they can deliver on some of the promises. The ability to use it as a mp3 player is very intriguing (especially if you can put a larger hard drive in it). Also I've heard some talk about adding tivo type features, and of course the ability to play regular dvd's.
Now if they would just build in a stereo receiver and direct tv circuitry, we'd have an all in one box! At that point who cares if it plays games, it does everything else.
"So, write a program that can decode Minesweeper for any size board, and you will join the pantheon of mathematical greats, alongside Euler and Pythagoras.
And, of course, there is that million-dollar prize."
Simple, either reverse engineer minesweeper or buy the source code from the creator. Then write a program that searches for a running copy of minesweeper. Have it look at the memory the game is using, find the representation of the game grid and extract the locations of the mines. If coded right it will work everytime.
Ok, this is probably considered cheating but for a cool $1,000,000 it might be worth it!
I've been using the iTouch desktop set for several months now and just love it. I even bought a second one to use at work.
The wireless mouse is a god send, not stupid cord to get in the way or hold you back. My only difficulty is that some of the people in my office find it amusing to hide the mouse because it isn't attached to anything and is easy to walk away with. Also someone decided that it would be a great idea to tape down the buttons one day after I left, the batteries were dead by the time I came into work the next day (since then I've delt with the individual responsible and their polished skull resides on a stick outside my area).
The keyboard isn't as usefull, but it is nice to be able to prop my feet up on a stool and set the keyboard in my lap without making sure I have enough cord. It's also handy to just hand the keyboard off to someone when they want to show you something, instead of playing musical chairs. It's also usefull for skipping through mp3's since it has the multimedia buttons built in. I can be in the kitched with the keyboard and still be able skip through tracks without running to the computer.
I'd like to note that I did try both sets together and was pleased to find that they didn't interfer with each other. I'm not sure why other people are having problems with this. I even tried to force the mouse to work with the other set, it wouldn't take it no matter what I did. Mine are relativly new, less than six months old, maybe they fixed the problem.
I haven't seen a gamepad version yet, but I'm not too sure I'd get one anyway. I'd rather use a good force feedback joystick and to keep one of those powered would take a few pounds of D batteries. At that point what use would it be, yes it's portable, but its too heavy to use.
I guess I'll take a lesson from Disney, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all", except I'll apply it to politics instead. I'm not informed of all the hot political issues and I don't care to be, so I don't see a reason to vote.
Somehow the goverment has gotten the idea that I don't care about the system, well, there right. More and more I feel the goverment is corrupt and there is very little one can do without some major redesign, not to mention a few assult riffles. I'm not advocating that we overthrow the goverment, just update and clean things up a bit.
For starters the goverment has way too much power, the entire election process was designed to make sure that no one belief would rule forever. However the 4 year term limit is too long, in the current era a president can sieze power and do some real damage to this country and the world (for example, it no longer takes months to send troops into battle, it takes hours).
Then there is the argument "do we really need elected officials anyway?" After all a politician usually doesn't make a move without checking the latest polls. Why not elminate the middle man and vote on the items directly?
Then there is the legal system, what a mess! An accused man could die before every having his day in court. Why do we need a system of lawers anyway? The original greek system, which our court system is based off of, used to make the two parties argue their case before a judge, instead of experts who spend their time finding loopholes in the law just to get a client off, talk about poor ethics.
I could go on but I've got better things to do. So what is my point, simple "we need change" and no canidate is going to agree with the required changes because it would limit their power or remove them from the system entirely. Why don't I vote for someone who will make a change, you may ask. Because I don't see anybody that seems all that devoted to the cause, instead I see a bunch of greedy politicians who need me to do something for them who will then toss me aside like a used rag when it's all over. No thanks!
When I see a canidate that is serious about doing something, not just talking, voting for, or urging change, but someone that is making change, then I'll support that person. As of yet, that person does not seem exist. Until that day I'll just sit back and watch the circus we call politics.
I was getting a bunch of "On sale today only!" e-mails from some company. I sent a typical "please remove me" e-mail every time a new message rolled in, but after a month I was still getting spammed.
So to make my plight a little clearer I created a 500K file with nothing but the word "remove" in it. I then quoted the file as text in the body of my next e-mail to them. The response I got back was from the system administrator was that they couldn't find my name in their mailing list and couldn't remove me. I responded back with the 500K text file again. The next e-mail I received was that I had been removed from their list. To this day I haven't received another e-mail from them.
The moral of the story, one 500K message is worth more than 500 1K messages.
The only way this might work is if everbody was assigned a unique id that was watermarked into the mp3 (or whatever format) as it's being downloaded. Of course it wouldn't take someone long to compare several songs with different keys in them before they hit on the encoding sequence and publish a crack.
As stated before his solution would work if the whole system was under some control but that's not likely to happen. Why would I want to add restrictions to the music I download when there is a ton of it free out there? Even if online method of music transport is shut down there still are friends!

For me it comes down to story. If the story I am watching (or playing) is good it doesn't need any gimmicks.
While the high res graphics or 3D experience is cool once in a while it gets old fast if the story sucks.

The sky isn't falling, the four horsemen aren't riding across the moors, just give it a fricking rest!
What happened to News for Nerds? Is it now Fear for Nerds?
Maybe we just need to start a "What Trump COULD do" thread and let the rest of us get on with life.
