Might it have had something to do with the Twitter-based HTML demo (http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/08/05/2348219/HTML-5-Canvas-Experiment-Hints-At-Things-To-Come?art_pos=8) that made Slashdot earlier today? The site in question hits Twitter for a large number of tweets, and I imagine a lot of/.'ers were checking it out earlier. I doubt it helped, at the very least...
Quite correct, they are a business. But US authorities still say "our populace is too fat" and yet continue to allow businesses like MacDonalds to sell sub-standard foods that contribute to this national trend.
The line has to be drawn somewhere. Fine, let them sell their food. But at least stop them enticing kids into eating it by offering free music.
Sigh, not _yet another_ incentive for kids to eat unhealthy garbage and get fat. McD's could get better kudos by only offering it with "healthy" things like salad.
Indeed. I have managed to steer clear of WMP for some time, preferring instead iTunes for MP3, and a collection of other apps for video. I do not use WMA format and do not intend to. So far, my audio experience has been license-free.
It seems to me that the further the development of WMP goes, the more anti-privacy features are included (like the whole Media Rights Management thing), which is why I will be very cautiously examining version 10 when it leaves "beta".
Curses, as soon as I read the article I thought about 2600 readers playing poker. Sod's law would have it that the first comment steals my potential "funny" modding up.:-P
As I see it, you are quite correct, but the whole RIAA situation definitely has the potential to develop into mass action which could fall under the definition of "blanket lawsuits."
As the parent pointed out, many users do not have the funds to defend themselves in court, and so the threat of lawsuits would be enough to deter. A "blanket lawsuit" against a few thousand more users would be an effective deterrent, especially if the RIAA uses underhanded tactics like selecting "targets" from low wealth groups, knowing that their chances of extracting money are slim anyway.
Surely a realtime playing device like this cannot build something 3D out of something 2D? We as humans have to look twice at some things to tell their depth on screen, and in real life you'll note that it's very hard, if you close one eye, so how is a machine going to work this out, in real time, with a 2D video, and no discernable knowledge of the subject or context?
Any in any case, will people buy it? Are 3D glasses and green-red IMAX films not good enough?:-P

Am I right in thinking, having RTFA'd, that this only applies to Windows XP, and not any previous version?
Thanks.
http://www.biggleszx.com/slashdot/5m_04.jpg should of course be the "third". Apologies.

Public Health Authority? We have one of those.
Good job I'm in perfect shape then. And not American. And not a MacDonalds customer. :-)

But wait, they don't *do* healthy things.

Heh, thanks for the correction. I haven't seen the film in too long.
..great, something i can stand on and pee my pants lookin off of...
On that note, imagine the fun of peeing from the top of that magnificent structure. (Cue Tom Hanks, Apollo XIII, "Say hello to Constellation Urine").

Looks like they just removed all files in their wwwroot dir in an effort to wake up the server. All I get is a directory listing.
