  4. WTF!! on Election Wrapping Up · · Score: 2

Okay, so I see this headline on CNN or MSNBC,(I don't remember which) that FL is keeping its polls open later, but both media bastards have GORE as the winner!? But now, the unofficial vote count has Bush in first. Its very annoying, the networks should wait till 100% of precincts in a state report in before it jumps the gun and awards a state to the possibly wrong candidate!

  6. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. on Obtaining Guest Speakers For Users Groups? · · Score: 1

Yes it is tough to get good speakers! Here at Purdue we have had Ian Malcolm, Richard Lynch of Zend Technologies, Wesley Chung (helped write rocket mail and yahoo mail) amoung others. A lot of our speakers are students/members that have a lot of know-how in different areas, from Perl/Tk to Booting a diskless machine.
Of course we have had our dissapointments with speakers. We have been contacting RedHat lately with no luck, and then we find out that the Purdue Networking Engineering Organization got the CEO of Redhat to come next month! Well balls! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

My best Advice is to keep contacting the speakers whom you wish to have come out, don't give up.. Of course it also helps to have lots of numbers, that is a lot of people who will come to the presentation.

Although I agree that offering to help out your school would be a good use of your talents (I myself helped out with my highschools computing network) I have noticed that many schools don't take their students seriously. Our suggestions to the our school on how to save them money (on hardware and software) and how to better secure the computers seem to fall by the wayside. I have also talked to other people and read about similiar problems.
I think that helping out less computer-savvy students would be a better use of your time and talent.

  9. My two cents on Embedding Ads In MP3s? · · Score: 1

I don't think that advertising in mp3's would really catch on. A lot of people who have mp3's obtain them illegally, and I doubt that companies would advertise in illegal mp3's. On the other hand the advertised mp3's could be distributed illegally, however I believe that some one would probably remove the advertisements from them.

  11. I am dissappointed at you people on Jon Katz' "Geeks" Goes Hollywood · · Score: 1

I seem to have read more negative comments than positive. JonKatz is a good writer, he makes good points. It seems to me that a lot of the slashdot community thrives on making miserable comments. Too bad. A lot of people here don't like Katz and continue to say so everytime one of his articles is posted. However I have yet to see any of you anti-katz people post anything better.

Also about the cameo brag. Who cares? Big deal, after all it is major bragging rights. I would if I had a cameo appearance in a movie. Most of you would too even though you say you wouldn't.

In short kudos to Jon Katz, getting a book published and a possible movie deal are a major accomplishment. Keep up the good work!

  14. These protests are really getting annoying! on The Message from Seattle · · Score: 1

Everyone has a cause. And as evil as it is for me to say this, I firmly believe that a large percent of people who argue about the issues raised by the Seattle protesters are only doing it to make themselves feel better. What bothers me most are the arguments. E.G. corporations are evil because of the "sweat shops". Are the really evil? Look at it this way, most people in these less industrialized countries would not even have jobs if it weren't for those companies. They choose to work there, they aren't being forced. For the most part the very meager wages that they are making are more money than they had before, NOTHING. What disgusts me more is that I hear people around me, especially in collegiate newspaper that I read, that these sweat shops are terrible, but if the companies (from which many by their clothes, say GAP for instance) stopped there over seas productions and made it all in the US, those same people that were upset over the sweat shops would be crying bloody murder when those companies raise their prices. I do think that conditions could be better in there but I also realize that it is the only job that some people have, and who are we to take that away from them?

Secondly, this environmental bull crap is getting extremely annoying, everyone is all about saving the planet. WRONG! Humans have only been on this rock for a very, very small time. It is human arrogance to believe that we are destroying the earth, rather we are only destroying ourselves! We will, inevitably destroy ourselves, whether it be by nuclear war, plague or a destruction of the environment we need to survive, and quite frankly we deserve it. The only true victims of our pollution and such are animals, and no, I am not an animal rights activist. I just realize that the only things that suffer because of us our plants and animals.
And while I am on the subject, all of you who are vegetarians solely for the fact that you think it is wrong to slaughter and eat "god's creatures" keep it to yourselves, last time I checked plants were made by god too.

Whew! It feels good to get that out!

The reason why QWERTY is used more than DVORAK is probably similiar to the reasons why Unix and its variants aren't being used more (by consumers).

If AI's become as intelligent as humans, they will probably have wants just as ours. Money and power. Since they are computers, their intelligence would probably be more than enough to become powerfull and dominant. I think that we should be careful when it comes to AI and not let it get out of hand. Or better yet, just leave well enough alone!
