This is one of the great things about IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager software (ok not quite cheap for home use, but in business...)
It treats the data as one thing and the storage as something else again. You move your data around between disk, tape etc without really caring what it's on.
For example, I've migrated from old IBM3570 media (omfg what crap) to LTO1 and I'm about to move to LTO3.
I don't have to restore/backup anything, just tell TSM to move the pool of data from one media type to another and make sure the library has enough tapes.
There are backups "in there" from over 5 years ago and I'm still able to read them despite any changes in media I have implemented.
The employer is doing themselves, but more importantly YOU a favor with this behaviour.
Why? Well besides the nice paid two weeks off, you are now officially not responsible.
If they didn't do this you are vulnerable to accusations at a later date if something goes wrong with a server that is traced to a point in time you were on your two weeks to bail.
Yes it's possible you could have sabotaged something before giving notice, and tough luck if they catch you at it. However you can't be held responsible for anything from the point of resignation onwards if removed as he described.
My class in 3rd form (age 13) were given an IQ test, but were allowed to leave once it was completed. Given the option of slogging through the test, or a head start on the rest of the school for the limited number of computers available during lunch, it's not hard to see which option the geeks in the class chose.
It was a closed results test and it was anonymous so I've always wondered how skewed the results were...
screen: Among many other abilities, screen+ssh can provide VNC-like capabilities for your terminal sessions.
I can't stress enough how elegantly simple and yet useful screen can be:
-Lost connectivity to the server? SSH back in and "reconnect" to your previous session.
-Kicked something off on your laptop and want to leave? Disconnect the running ssh session and reconnect tomorrow (or later at home) to pickup where you left off.
-Crap, what was that filename I wanted to use again? Start another screen session instead of another SSH session and flip back when you find out what you needed. You can even mark/cut/paste between sessions.
Kick screen off in your profile and never look back...
Isn't there a lifespan on NAND flash memory in terms of read/write. I'm wondering how they have dealt with this.
I realize the amount of read/writes required is quite high, but this application is far beyond your typical memory key or camera situation in terms of activity.
I too am very happy with my STM Laptop bag. Locally, including delivery it came to AU$99 which is close in US$ to your stipulated price range.
There is more than enough room for every laptop accessory you need in my model (sports) and it expands great when I stuff it full of a change of clothes for an overnighter.

It's a matter of perspective.

I had trouble with the link but this seems to do the trick: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/iTunes_M usic_Store_comes_to_Australia/0,2000061733,3921879 8,00.htm

Is it just me or does "WiFi + Earphones + Microphone + PalmApp = IP phone?"
