WEP is completly insecure, and can be broken really easily, its really not worth it. I think making sure you are not broadcasting your ID, and setting up MAC address filtering, is the way to go. That would keep war drivers from 1)Finding your network, and 2) Connecting to it.
As for war drivers sniffing passwords and stuff out of the air, all you would have to do is make an effort to use secure methods of transport, like SSL,TLS, etc, which is way stronger and harder to crack. we forget that plain text passwords, etc. are just as harmful on a wired network then on wireless network. Would you submit your CC information to a company, on a WIRED network, that sent your information with out encrypting it via SSL? Of course not! Same as with Wireless networks.
I simply purchase a single copy of their software and sell it for half the price.
Yem technically you CAN by one copy of said companies software and then re sell it, but most companies will trandmark a name, image, icon etc. so you can't directly re sell it. What you would have to do is re compile the code and sell it under a DEFFRENT name, image, icon, etc. This is where a companies reputation would come in, how well said company deals with there constumers in providing support etc.
It is only those two items combined that will allow a company to flurish under the GPL, for if a company is underselling, (IE giving away a product) but with out support, etc. Then there will be some people who will rather pay for a product then recieve the free (gratis) one. I'm not even saying the company has to sell its support, as long as the company deals with its customers justly and humanly, (not just as a commodity as many corperations do now), then that will build up the image of said corperation, yet, if a small sub set of people belive they can do it better, they can grab the source and re package it and start up there own company and compete.
and thers also no way it would hold up in court, EULA's (to my knowledge) haven't even been tried in court, and according to people on/. if they where to be brought to court they would suffer a humilating defeat.
OK, we are on/. right? You actually admit to buying NEW CD's? I know this isn't an RIAA thread, but please, you know where the money goes to if you buy new CD's right? ok, one I haven't bought any new cds in over 2 years, (mostly because everything that is out thus far is CRAP), but if/when I do, I most certianlly will NOT buy new CD's percisly because I KNOW where that money is going to. I would rather my money on an overpriced product goto a local used music shop than the DAMNED RIAA.
ok, I think we need another reminder about what the "Free" in "Free Software" means.
Repeat after me...
Free as in Speech not Free as in Beer...
Why is this such a hard concept to grasp? There is nothing stoping "Acme" company from selling software that is 100% GNU. Said company does not have to let you download there product for Free as in Beer. Said company must allow you access to the source code of said program, by ether letting you download the source code, OR for a nominal fee (cost of a cd + shipping) provide the source code, but THATS ALL.
America is so divided right now, right down the middle. All it would take is say, the draft being re-instated, (which is almost inevitable seeing that both Kerry and Bush want it to happen), and a few people being thrown in jail for doging, that combined with a repeat of the 2000 election where the loser CLEARLY one the voice of the people, and we will head toward civl war.
I for one, Titor not withstanding, (Titor or whatever his name is, who I consider a fraud), I can see such a war popping up in 2005, sooner rather than later if George W Bush is re-elected agian, and the republicans still have a strangle hold on Congress.
Sure our solders are said to of signed little pieces of paper that asks them if they would shoot on Americans, but when it comes down to it, I feel T LEAST half of them won't, and would even break ranks and join the rebals.
Of course if one is a rebal and is caught by the US goverment don't expect the US goverment to play by the Geneva convention, especially if it is the Bush Administration who is running the whole thing. You'll be stripped, humiliated, and yes tortured, all because you may not be wearing a uniform for a country.
This is my fear when ever I turn on the TV ( something rarly done now adays, seeing that I abhore TV because of the rampent commericalism displayed ), because I know that with a few short years there WILL be a civil war, and knowing that I would be on the side of the rebals, I fear that if I were caught there would be nothing stopping the US Goverment from tortuing me like they torture so-called terrosits at GB, or Iraq.
uh actually the authorities, still need a warrent, the problem is they can get that warrent in secret and not even tell you about it till way after you have been searched/had things seized. So to the outside observer, AKA YOU, it appears that they do not need a warrent when in fact they have gone in seceret to a judge and gotten a warrent, and that warrent is held in seceret because of "national security"
and how will you keep big mega corperations from drowning out the little guy? or in fact just jamming the little guys single?
I admit that the public airwaves ( among many things )are WAY to regulated. But there needs to be minimal regulation to keep the big guys from stomping all over the little guys.
never happen, to meany freakn Christians would balk at the idea of genetic manipulation, (and thats not even mentioning the "right to life" bull that would come about because of experimentation with human enbryos) face it, if we want to advance in science we need to get rid of not only Christians but all radical religious sects.
Well, at first a POTS bridge wouldn't be needed, as the infrastructure is in its infancy people will still use land line/cell phones for a majority of there tel com means.
As there are more Mesh networks put up, (which would, atleast IMO would like to see, would be as easy as buying an access point and plugging it in, and then your on the mesh network), local goverments would establish 911 centers THROUGH the local mesh network. For a time there would be POTS AND mesh network 911 service but as the mesh networks get bigger, and are used more often there would be a gradual shift toward the mesh network away from the traditional POTS infrastructure.
If its as easy as pluging in a router, (don't know the logistics of how to make that work, perhaps evey router would be assigned a group of IPv6 address based on the routers man address??) then it would be hard to tax, seeing that you own the equipment. 911 service would probably just be taxed through other sources of income, (sales, property, God there are way too many taxes as it is!)
For the love of God I would love to see that man (Orrin Hatch) kicked out of office. Too bad he is LOVED by the citizens of Utah (ok Salt Lake City hates him, but Salt Lake City is repeatadly called the "Libral Basterd" city of Utah).
I actually live in Orem, Utah (under 10 miles from Lindon AKA SCO headquearters), and have been seiriously thinking about moving because this community (~90% Mormon) is WAY to conservative, (it actually scares me how conservative Mormons are). I am somewhat tempted to fight the up hill battle hear in Utah, specificlly hear in Utah County, where there is the highest concentration of Republican/Conservative peoples.
The problem with these people ( and it has to do with ~90% of them being Mormon) is that they are all sheep who are use to following heirarchal commands. The people in this community can not think for themselves, and it is rutinlly preached in thier, (ok OUR, sense I am a "Libral", active Mormon), churches.
It would be a hard fight to fight, and I just don't see the commitment that is neccessary from the minority to make the fight. I'm game, if thats what needs to be done. I am constently scared at the political apathy in the Mormon Church, ok, well not APATHY, one sidedness. I know there are Mormon leaders in the heirarchy who are democrates, they just get ignored by the ignorance of the conservative majority with in said Heirarchy, (Boyd K. Packer would be example of a conservative BIGOT with in the Mormon heirarchy).
God would I love to see an Enterprise Ep with Q in it! I LOVE that character! Maybe the real reason behind the cold war is that the continuem is getting antsy that us mere humans are starting to entroch on there territory, though that would be silly because all Q would have to do is wave his had and then we never would have exsisted, (unless of course Q wants to see Humans become on par with the continuem, err soo much to look into!)
Bring back Q! Is there a petition I can sign somewhere???:-P
I don't ansewer my cell if I the person isn't in my address book (Meaning there name doesn't show up when the phone rings). If its important they'll leave a voice message, which if they do, my phone beeps at me and I check right away (say if it was an emergancy of something) otherwise I if its a tele, I just delete the message with in the first 10-20 seconds).
Sure its a hassle, but it keeps me from having to listen and argue with a telemarketer, and I end up using less minutes by just checking voicemail than ansering the bleeping phone.
Obviously I'm not one of those Americans who HAVE to check there phone when ever it rings, (no matter where they are).
Quark was soo cool I keep on refering to him as Quark, even though I'm watching Buffy, (he's the principel in seasons 1,2 and 3) and Stargate SG-1 (one of the Knox in season 1).;-)
The main problem you have with this is that almost all scripted television works with a set cast
I can name TWO shows off the top of my head that don't have regular casts, (though they may have regular guest apprances by one or more actors) and thats the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits.
I think the idea of a Star Trek Chronicles is a good idea, and could be done, kinda like how Outer Limits, (is the new one still on or in repeats??), or the Twilight Zone have been done.
>br>
That being said it would allow for old timers, like the TNG, DS9, and Voyager crews to come back for an episode or two and still be able to go about there careers not locking themselves down to one series anda rigirous shooting schedule.
Or maybe they just now heard of the Van Allen Radiation Belt, and the fact that it would be expensive as HELL to build a manned craft to penetrate it! Of course they also are just relizing that the US never went to the moon, (Russia already knew this back in the day).
No one is going to leave this god forsaken rock untill we can blast enough lead shielding in orbit to cover a spacecraft, we can't do it know, we deffiently didnt do it in the 60's:-P
Though, the article does say (yes I did RTFA), that you can use Cell Phone blocking equipment with a license. I would love a theater (hell, even my local university) to get one of those licenses and then USE cell phone jamming to prevent inconsiderate people from using there cell phone.
There should be some kinda warning though, like a sign at the beginning of the theater/university that would askpeople to turn there cell phones off, and that this location utilizes Cell Phone Jamming.
Screw x86, I am starting to contemplate a full change over to the PPC. Sure it costs more, but if Microsoft continues to raise their prices, it might just be the thing that pushes me. Not that I currently USE Windows, (I use Gentoo Linux on my Desktop and OS X on my powerbook), and I will also continue to buy x86 (be it AMD chips on not Intel) for my desktop/server's in the future. If I am ever in the market agian for another Laptop, (wife, child, etc) the decesion will be that much easier to stick with the PPC than an x86 processor.
Of course by the time I am married and have kids, Billy and Company will have gone bankrupt and Linux will have more of the OS share than Apple, so its a moot point really!;-)
TV and such should eventually be sent through cable lines as this would free up a decent chunk of bandwidth. I understand not everyone has cable or even wants it, but it could be a "responsibility" of cable companies to send these signals through cable to anyone who wants it, for free, and as a benefit the cable company can easily offer free cable for a few days to people to try and get them hooked, etc. Or even through satellite, which of course uses bandwidth, but I digress.
As long as these cable companies own the infrastructure of cables throughout Americas cities they will NEVER allow ANYONE to hook up and recieve reception for free. I've mentioned this on another post, bbut this is another reason why community sponsered infrstuctures such as Utah's UTOPIA project and Provo's iProvo Project would be a really good idea. Because the city (in the case of iProvo) owns the fiber based lines, which is maintained through tax dollers, would be in a position to allow limited TV access for 'free' (not really free, cause the city citizen pays for it through his/her taxes).
as long as big uber corperations hold local communities hostage with THERE infrastructre, they will ever be as benivolent as you prepose.
If one looks at history, (not recent history, aka before the American Revolution), it was India, and the Middle East that where the center of Innovation, and the advancment of science. Our numerals are a prime example. we got them from teh Arabs (aka Muslims) who in turn learned them from India.
It was the Muslims who, after the fall of the Western portion of the Roman Empire, who kept us from sliding back any further intellectually when the Church (aka Catholicism) started burning scientist and other intellectuals at the stake for heresy.
Even on back to Alexander the Great, who conquered all the way in the East to India, brought back many of our concpts of Mathmatics, astrology etc from India, and other ancient Middle Eastern coutires.
That we begin to see a shift back to India, as a source for intellectualism and innovation is not surprising at all, when one relizes the whole picture of history and how we got here.
No reason you can't have a box pop up once in a great while, "hey, I've found an updated driver for your Blah Brand sound card, do you want me to install it? []Yes []No, don't ask again []Not right now, ask later"
and there is also no reason why you could not have a SECOND boox that pops up and asks for the root password (if your installing it system wide). This is something I like with OSX, when something is going ot be installed system wide it pops up and asks for a root password. theres a lot of app's I wish that did this, (like extensions for firefox that you may want to install system wide). Of course this will be a security risk *if* the operator doesn't know what she/he is doing, (like ~90% of windoze users), but for the rest of us who KNOW what is going on it could be a valuable asset.:-)
"If you buy DRM music, you have no right to break the DRM"
this is bull, no matter if it states in the EULA (which I am sure it does, just haven't RTF-EULA)that you can not rip the DRM out, it would not hold up in a court of law. Copyright allows for fair use, and even if the DMCA, (agian, havn't read it) says you cant do it, you bring it up in COURT and the judge is going to laugh the RIAA out of the courtroom.
Also, I am SURE (ok almost sure) that in future versions of PlayFair they'll remove the ID, and if they dont sense the code is GPL'd someone will fork it, and create a program to remove the ID themselves.
I'm sure many ./ers and other would pay good money to have a properly designed system with modern components that is DRM free.
Of course untill the **AA's use there bought congress critters to pass a law stating that anyone who uses a DRM free machine is violating the law.
WEP is completly insecure, and can be broken really easily, its really not worth it. I think making sure you are not broadcasting your ID, and setting up MAC address filtering, is the way to go. That would keep war drivers from 1)Finding your network, and 2) Connecting to it.
