We have Google Earth, Picasa No, we have an old, stale version of Picasa with only token support now. Picasa for Linux is ass and the Blog this feature for example is now broken because they updated blogger and haven't bothered yet to catch up the Linux version.

There's a developer in the group that says they are working on it, but it's been like this for quite some time - so it shows that Google's linux support is only token support at best. If they had Linux support they'd use a cross playform development process rather than porting wine to support their apps.

How is that different than DesktopBSD or PC-BSD? Redhat is a combination of the linux kernel + gnu tools + desktops.

As another poster wrote, BSD does not use GNU userland.

Just remember DesktopBSD or PC-BSD is FreeBSD + graphical installer. It maintains direct compatibility with FreeBSD. They aren't forks, they are addons.

FreeBSD and NetBSD are derived from 4.3BSD from Berkley, and OpenBSD was a fork from NetBSD. Linux distros move together with kernel releases; BSD operating systems do not.

You can call them flavours of BSD if you like, but not distros.

  3. Re:Will somebody please explain... on 24-hour Test Drive of PC-BSD · · Score: 3, Interesting

I know some people don't like me using the term distro as applied to BSD, but its the easiest way to explain what it really is.

The big difference is that many perceive that Linux is an OS where it is not. Linux needs userland, and fits well with GNU. AFAIK all BSD's are OS's on their own, and are maintained as an OS in the source tree whereas Linux is just the kernel. Each flavour of BSD is an OS of itself. DesktopBSD and PC-BSD are maintained in parallel to FreeBSD. As compared to DragonflyBSD which is a 4.x fork, or NetBSD or OpenBSD which too are forks.

Just say it with me - Linux is not an OS. Linux/GNU is an OS. Add some a package manager and you have a distribution.

Doubtful. Dell isn't in the insurance business per se - they probably have an underwriter take care of it for Dell - insurance is tricky business involving actuaries and probabilities and all sorts of lame stuff a computer company shouldn't be involved in.

Considering this is an optional warranty coverage that you pay extra for, the cost of that warranty coverage might go up, but not the laptop price.

which simply means advertisers must come up with newer, more subtle or outrageous or manipulative ways of increasing their brand awareness and appeal. Great post! I want you to run the marketing department in our office ;)

Thing is though, the outrageous stuff is what gets me. This morning I was watching the morning news, and from the traffic chopper out comes a freaking ad from the traffic lady's mouth. How can the morning news not think that this just annoys viewers, and that most of us are intelligent enough to look past that garbage?

I don't choose what beverage I drink from what's on TV. I've never seen an ad for Orangina on TV and that's my favourite beverage. I pick a restaurant based on reviews online at dinehere.ca (I'm from Vancouver so it makes sense). I refuse to buy Nike because honestly they are way overpriced for the value you get. If I am an athlete where the extra spring in my step makes a difference, I'll let Nike put there shoes on me for free. Until them, Umbro or Adidas or Puma is fine for me and I'll keep the other $150 in my pocket thanks. I don't pick my beer based on how slutty looking the models on TV are. I like Hoegarden and Amstel myself, and don't see much ads for those.

I've sat in on marketing conversations at the place I work, and they truly seem to believe that end users are easily manipulated. I think marketers have beliefs about consumers that just aren't true any more.

Interestingly, in the world of ETL, Informatica won their patent infringement case against Business Objects from what I've read, but IBM's Data Stage product was cleared because of prior art. All it means is that IBM is allowed to infringe on Informatica's ETL patent and Business Objects is not.

The whole notion of patenting a business process is absurd, and the notion of patenting a software algorithm too is stupid. Imagine if today some ass hat were granted a general enough patent on buying stuff on the internet as a whole. We'd have no online stores. Came pretty darn close with Amazon and their one-click BS.

Apple might be nibbling at their heels, but there's certain price barriers that Apple just doesn't understand. I can drop $500 and get a pretty kick-ass Windows box. I think $500 gets me an iPhone.
