There's another sibling post made by that annoying guy, AC, but I will reply to yours: As another AC pointed out, this was... guess what... meant to be funny! Yes, it was meant to be funny and you can easily replace Linux with Windows and the directory tree with the registry tree. Too bad some people just can't take a joke. If someone told me a joke that would suit me, I'd probably tell him/her another one that would suit me better, because I only like to be around people that understand the difference between "fun" and "insult". I love geek jokes and I never bitch when someone tells me a geek joke and I prove them that I know even more, better geek jokes than they do. (and being a geek, I usually spoil the joke after they laugh, explaining it to them...)
Just because YOU didn't like the particular entities I've used (Linux + directory tree + kernel panic instead of good ol' Windows + registry tree + BSOD) doesn't make you right. It doesn't make me right, because... guess what... it was a JOKE. And you know why I wrote this? Because I'm sick and tired of nobody defending Windows in any way. You just stick to your Linux and bitch that Windows isn't good for anything but you won't even touch it. I thought you people at least had a sense of humor - at least the mods did.
Windows brought a lot of people closer to computers. Windows brought a lot of idiots on the Internet. Well guess what? If it wasn't for those idiots, most of us wouldn't have found computers so interesting and if we did, we probably didn't even had a job in computing, because computers wouldn't have been so popular.
Grow up and get a life. Go sob somewhere else, you spoiled brat! Free source code doesn't replace a hot meal, it's just some spare change... I give it away sometimes, but I also work for a closed-source company so that I can afford to live. Closed-source companies are what keep most of us open-source fanatics (yes, I am one) alive.
P.S.: Regarding your sig... there's also another good place, it's in My Documents! Because My Documents are being used to pay the mortgage on/home
Just stop and think for a moment, but don't forget to keep on going!
PPS: I have no clue how I come up with these rants, but I love them. I hope you do, too. Enjoy.
Or maybe they wanted to just make a one-time payment for Windows and not hire a Linux admin, because it's easier to configure the things they need in Windows, people are more familiar with it and don't need to spend time to learn new stuff, I doubt any external users would have access to their network and there may be other reasons we're not aware of.
Windows does what they need. The BSOD is extremely rare on 2k/XP.
"Going open-source" can also mean something like: IT: Captain, we're doing down! Captain: Fix that computer problem! IT: I'm trying, I've posted the question on two forums, but we're in a bad timezone, sir.

Back on the submarine: Captain: Damn it man, did you fix that problem? Just reboot the computers and it will most likely go away, that's what I do at home... IT: Sir, this is Linux; it's so stable that rebooting it won't help, it will remain in the same stable (and buggy) state. But there were also some modifications we made to the system without rebooting in the past two years - hey, btw, check out my penis size! - which my get broken if we reboot... Captain: Then just rebuild everything! IT: I'm sorry, sir, but my religion won't allow me to reinstall Linux. Captain: I read something around here that says our computers are in used by gnomes, what the fuck is going on?
And the IT goes back to his computer: IT: tar zxvf nuke-launch-0.3.9-alpha IT: cd nuke-launch-0.3.9-alpha IT:./nuke-launch/home/linuxzealot/nukez/src/lib/src/build/nuke.so/home/linuxzealot/nukez/maps/europe/general/europe-map-0.1.33-beta-delta-psi IT: Damn typo! No, I meant version 0.1.34! Shit! Shit! Shit! Computer: Kernel panic! Arrrghhhhhhhhh!!! IT: write captain@deck sir, the computer just panicked, i think we really have a problem.
Why do some people think that Windows can ONLY mean bad things? And yeah, everyone remembers the BSODs we used to get back in '98 until 2001, but nobody remembers the "kernel panic," because it was less c
I only use Firefox/Chrome because they make it A LOT easier to get the updates and security patches. There may be some that haven't been fixed, but their number is insignificant compared to an unpatched IE6/7. Also, updates tend to NOT break other things in the operating system.
What about opening a folder and typing an URL in the location bar? I've seen many people doing that... they open My Computer, type www.google.com and that's how they "go" on the Internet. Some replace "My Computer" with "The Internet" and that makes even more sense! And they complain that you have to put "The" in front of it or it won't work. Users can be extremely inventive.
Define "a handful of users" and then define "a handful of Slashdot users" and as a sibling points out: imagine a kind of hosting plan that would be nice for "a handful of users," where you could publish what you wanted for free or just for a couple of ads, which isn't backed up by any big business (because this isn't business presentation site). Wow, that kind of hosting would be nice for the end-user that would spend more money on transactions than the actual price of the hosting, because the end-user doesn't have 10,000 visitors/day except once every 5 years.
First of all, I feel very sorry for you and I hope you don't take it the wrong way, but what are you doing on Slashdot, man?!? This place is full of socially challenged idiots pretending to be smart by using sarcasm (ummm... yeah, I realize I'm part of the crowd, but I don't care). Unfortunately, today's Slashdot coolness is often confused with funny sarcastic comments, instead of serious insightful comments.
I'm also curious, how do you detect sarcasm in writing, if it's not specially marked, as one of the first comments suggests? Honestly, I have a small problem with sarcasm, too: in speech, I use too much sarcasm and other people often don't understand me, but when someone uses it I find it difficult to understand them. On the other hand, I'm close to the average when it comes to reading/writing.
We don't know if it will be enough, but it's a step forward. It's definitely a giant step from bitching about copyright on Slashdot. For now, all we can do is hope and thank Michael Geist for daring to speak up like this for so many people.
Actually, I've "invented" lots of things when I was younger but nobody believed they could work so nobody helped me in any way. In the past few years, I've seen dozens of contraptions similar to mine and that have quite a lot of success. The 3D crime scene scanner is one example, which creates a 3D copy of a crime scene for later analysis. Another might be the water condensator I've seen on/. a few weeks ago, trying to condensate water vapors from the air and store it for later use when the atmosphere is too dry to get any water from it. There are many many other cool things I thought of, but because I didn't have any kind of support from others, I couldn't actually build them.
In today's society, it's very difficult to accomplish anything on your own.
How the heck can this be modded as Troll? Really, people, for most users, computers are simply tools, like VCRs and we expect everything to run out of the box (like it is when you just go to a store and pay and you get a computer which you can use for games and movies and internets - surprise, it's probably running Windows XP/Vista). Some people really don't have the time to tweak their operating system just to watch some movies or use their webcam on Yahoo! Messenger, etc. I have paid for two distros and - no surprise - they didn't work out of the box like Windows did. I just install Windows, put in a CD, click a button, reboot and my computer's ready for use. Until Linux will have the same simplicity for the users, it doesn't have a chance.
This is not trolling, this is fact for people that are too busy doing other things instead of turning into geeks.
JavaScript has objects. The thing is, it has prototypes instead of classes and in it's current state, native inheritance and properties (using the classic setters/getters we're so accustomed to) are impossible without using some hacks. Please! This language simply has different concepts and is looking at OOP from a different perspective. I actually enjoy programming in JavaScript and I've quickly learned to love it. If you look at it and say "ewww, this is different than what I know and I have to actually LEARN something to be able to program in JS" you will clearly find it difficult and useless. The main difference between classic OOP and prototypical OOP is not so subtle but learning to program in JavaScript takes more than just learning it's syntax.
It's great for small and large applications (I've written things you only dream of, in JS) but the thing is that most people are used to writing quick web hacks in JavaScript that they don't see it's true power outside the world of the web and in the world of large apps. Because most of what you see is either obfuscated because it's made to run as quickly as possible or it's a small piece of code that uses some libraries (ie, jQuery), you're simply not used to seeing large applications built using beautiful JavaScript.
I was about to go on and on about this but I'm already waaay off-topic. My point is simple: JS is also fine for larger apps; the fact that you haven't tried that flavor properly doesn't mean it doesn't taste good. Basically you said something like "chicken are good for laying eggs but do they taste good? Ugh" in a world where very few people discovered fire and the others are still afraid of it. Now I have to pass the bong of analogies to someone else. Cheers.
Since when is this nebulous entity called "the media" the only group that "has access to all the information"?
Since "the people" are too stupid or lazy or busy to read books; watching and discussing about a football game is much cooler than reading and discussing about proteins.
