Do you keep wav files on your hard drive because they are loss-less?
After a certain point, compression isn't hindering the quality that much, and the amount of space that is saved is more important than the small amounts of the quality that are lost. Just like the mp3 format works so well by slimming down the things the human ear can't hear, jpg works by blending and compressing images in way that the human eye can barely tell the difference while saving optimum amounts of space.
I really agree with this. For example, there are a few software programs that I use and would like to recommend to people, but then I remember the long text based config file, or other small things that prevent the naive user from getting software working properly.
Little things like this make programming something about 10x easier (which is why most open source programmers do it, even I do it), but really do leave out the general public.
I mean look at the most popular open source programs (going by sourceforge). You have DC++, which has a beautiful interface, much better than its closed source counterpart (also more useful). You have Gaim, again designed with the interface and users in mind.
What is the common factor among the list? A pretty GUI. How many powerful console applications do you see up there? Very few.
I hope we haven't hit a point that many other industries hit (Music with the internet, Car companies with hybrid cars, etc), in which legal struggles and companies vying for position create massive delays on new and better technology.
I believe it is because the command line is very simple and compact, single-threaded and simple to understand.
Modern GUIs have many things going on at once, which can confuse people who have no idea what is going on. Windows pop up, there are icons to deal with, they have to search through endless menus to find what they want.
The command line however has simple command to remember instead of complicated graphical procedures, and the status of the command line really never changes. If you mess something up, you are still back where you started, but in the GUI, a user could close a window to open another one which obviously confused people who don't understand what they mean.
I can't imagine any better way to produce a professional looking CD than with technology like this. Sure it is no better than a sharpie for home users, but for people who burn demo CDs or sell software online and want to make it look professional, this is about as good as it gets.
Since I doubt this ever was/is negative to the internet as a whole, I don't really see the problem in a company "exploiting" their good fortune. This is how capitalism works.
If I were a shareholder, I would angry if they didn't make this move.
In many cases (especially with tech stocks), stock price has *nothing* to do with how well or badly a company is doing. In fact, if a company gets a lot of press, which SCO has, it often causes a lot of people to buy the stock, which in turn causes the stock price to go up. Was there really any good reason to be investing in the company? Probably not.
Another example of an over-inflated tech stock, that will probably crash like so many other have.

PNG is there to replace GIF, not JPG.
JPG is still the best image format for photographs.
I am still confident that a 747 full of DVDs will beat anything we have in the next few years. Sadly the latency is a bit too high for quake.
When are they going to start using bittorrent to start distributing these things?

The author definetly has a point.
They should do what I saw in family guy. They just had a machine combined an oxygen molecule with 2 hydrogen. The water it made was really good.
It looks to me like the whole thing was just invented. I'll bet if I visited, I could find the problem in two minutes... tops.
Well the good news is that the people that actually care about this study are the people that understand its shortcomings and inaccuracies.
In the long term, businesses still care about cutting costs, and linux is the way to do that.
I hear their next move is to replace titanium tweeters with spicy rolls.
Just when you thought they had already made the most useless and overpriced product (segway), they come out with this. Well done engineers.

Since the site is down, I'll give a quick recap:
They all lost.
Now the real question is: Where the hell are you going to go?
At least he regrets it. The problem is it is encouraging SCO, which is a big problem.
Just let them go to court and lose, don't give anything to them.
So a DVD Player is better at playing DVDs and video...
An MP3 player is better at playing MP3s...
A PDA is better at being a PDA...
And I am sure all of the above have a much longer battery life and are cheaper than this unit.
I really just don't see why anybody would buy this.
Thank god I am out of elementary school. Memorizing 9 planets was hard enough, but 10! They have got to be kidding.

Looks like "Homeland Security" forgot about the internet.
What I want to know is when I am going to get free WiFi on mars. That $10/day stuff is killing me.
Should slashdot march on Washington DC?

Look what happened to the mars rover. Computer crash and communication is lost. Stick to walkie-talkies.
How many years are we talking about? The lease on my land on the moon is running out, and I need to know how soon I should renew.
