    I read this earlier today, and his statement about aircraft with emotions, so that the plane itself would be more shit scared of crashing than the passengers...

    ...would we ever get any aircraft off the ground, if this was the case?

    Control Tower: "Come on flight 3587f, you have to take off now"

    flight 3587f: "Nope, I am staying RIGHT HERE, and nothing you can do will make me..."

    Control Tower: "Pretty Pleaseeeeeeeee"

    It is a terrible shame when quite unbelievable stuff goes on, and is treated as mundane.

    To me, being born before the space race, man on the moon etc., this is still fascinating. Why current the current generation is interested in the slightest, I don't know.

    What all these guys are doing was totally unthinkable 20 years ago.

    Lets hope we will get another 20 years when the next generation filter through.

    The problem is him and the rest of the gang then realised that it was software that ran the computer - not the hardware, and if you could capture that market, you got it made...

    ...and history proved them right.

    But the oxymoron issue now is FOSS/OSS doing exactly the same thing to MS, and they can't compete against it (because it isn't an entity).

    Huh. Being an English man living in England, I have to pay a mandatory LICENCE to the BBC every year even if I don't watch BBC TV (I only need to be proved to have a 'machine' that can receive the transmissions).

    So, this is pretty crap - using rip-off UK to pay for it all.

    BTW, blind people get a rebate of 50%...

    You only need to look at time 'standards', which stemmed from the railways in the UK (how can you run a 'timetable' if all parts of the country run their own time?' - as an aside, railway timetables are worthless now, as the punctuality of UK trains are soul destorying if you need to use them commuting).

    Then look at gun manufacture that introduced 'standards' to make parts that all fit no matter where that part was made.

    Now look at the software state. Companies deliberately adopting the 'standard' that every agree on to make it all work, then once in common usage, change it slightly (privately) to break the standard and have their own monopoly.

    I can't remember who said it, but "You put a supposedly intelligent person in front of a computer and they become an incompetent idiot".

    At work I deal with some front line helpdesk stuff, and honestly sometimes you wonder what on earth these people do at home (I keep getting an error message! What does it say? I don't know... I don't understand computers) - like if a light bulb goes, do they sit in the dark until an electrician comes out to replace it?
