  4. A better whois could do the same thing on Privacy Advocates Bemoan the Problems With WHOIS · · Score: 1

Whatever, they can make a new "WHOIS" that doesnt give out your address, phone number, email address, and basically all your private contact information - on the internet. Before someone can get whois information, they should be questioned to make sure they have a legitimate claim - and then the questioner should forward that complaint/information to the site owner, and allow the site owner to decide whether to divulge their information to that person or not. Basically, its what a lot of domain services already do, only that should be the DEFAULT for WHOIS - not an extra, expensive option.

  5. Re:That is not right on Trent Reznor Says "Steal My Music" · · Score: 1

There is a flaw with this idea; last time we "stopped buying" so much music, the music companies instantly blamed it on piracy, and used that as a tool to force the creation of bad laws, DRM, and lawsuits. These guys are like a bull in a china shop. The only way to stop them is if artists gradually switch to small independent labels.

  9. The Real SimCity on Big Business Loves the Computer Gaming Industry · · Score: 5, Insightful

Video game companies are very good at making effective and user-friendly software, and that kind of quality is lacking in products made for buisnesses - most of which have to settle for generic CAD programs that can do "everything" instead of merely doing the specific application required easily and effectively.

Take SimCity for example - if you could adapt it to instead be used for city-planning in works departments (water, gas, civil/construction, hydro, etc.), it would make things more simple/easy, and it could simulate the future.

  11. Warnings should be used for buggy hardware on Theo de Raadt Details Intel Core 2 Bugs · · Score: 1

Anyone whose tried to get more than a single IDE cdrom drive and serial ATA 2 drives working on a core 2 system at the same time, has probably seen just how buggy core 2 can be. Intermittent/random OS failures, the hard-drives fail randomly (even SATA2 ones), etc. - and that was consistent on 3 motherboards, with 5 different hard drives, even when IDE-sata adaptors or a PCI-IDE card were used. Not only that, but some HD's are outright incompatable with some core2 motherboards.

Theres no excuse for this unreliability, and especially the lack of information. There should have been warnings/more information ON THE BOX, so that consumers dont have to do tons of research just to make sure they're buying a product that will work PROPERLY (or work with their existing hardware). Isnt that already required by law? Mayby someone should start a class-action lawsuit or something, just to get the message across.

  12. What are they even pirating? on Virtualization May Break Vista DRM · · Score: 1

Thats what i dont get. They talk about it like people are going to copy and spread a Vista VM, thats 10Gigs, and would let people run the VM (use Vista) without paying for Vista.

Then somehow, magically, this has something to do with Music/Movie DRM? Are they talking about cracking the DRM on media files from within the VM (which would give you the normal file-size minus the DRM part)? Or are they talking about distributing the Vista-VM (which would apparently be really huge for unknown reasons)?

Exactly! When i was in Engineering (and even still), i basically just made piles around my room (i liked to call them "que stacks"), and shoved more important things (when they required more mobility) into various folders. The most important folder was my red "TODO!!!" folder. After that came the "current" folder, followed by the "somewhat important" folder, the "do later" folder, and the "FUN!!!" folder (that usually had Scientific American's and printed internet articles in it ;D ).

Other than that, i threw recent lecture notes onto a clipboard and two clipboard-like-folders that held them until i had enough time to put them into their actual binders, which was like, once every two weeks. It didnt matter if anything was in a binder, since i was always re-reading stuff.

The biggest problem i had wasnt finding stuff, it was moving about without knocking stuff over, and the heat of summer. Once you get really hot, you just instinctively turn on the fan, and suddenly everything you were working on goes all to hell. Which is why i started weighing down piles with textbooks - the papers cant get knocked over, OR fanned!

Whats with the "You may install one copy of the software on the licensed device. You may use the software on up to two processors on that device at one time."

Um, is this for real? When did microsoft write this Eula? Last time i checked, we were on the verge of embarking on a new era of multi-processor machines. Intel and AMD have been boasting about having 4 or more processor machines available in the next year, and Vista will be the OS that will probably COME INSTALLED on these machines. But these machines violate the "current" Vista EULA! What gives! As far as I've heard, Vista should technically support these machines (with more than 2 processors), but what are they expecting us to do in order to comply with this restriction? Are we suddenly going to be expected to buy 2 liscences, or are they going to change their liscence? If they dont change this, are they going to enforce it? In any case, this restriction was valid a few years ago, but it is now outdated; they need to find a new way to distuinguish between high performance servers and user machines.
