There was an interesting episode of Frontline on PBS recently that dealt with this topic. I think it first aired last year, but still current I think. You can see the whole thing on-line for free if you are really interested...

Why can't we just start over with an entirely new web standard that would be designed in a more efficient manner?
Yes, why don't we? The layered nature of the protocol stack is meant to allow for multiple versions and revisions of various and sundry functionality and interaction between layers. All the bright outspoken/.'ers here can go off and build some newer, better layers, or even a whole new stack!
No more cookies needed, huzzah!
Bombing....maybe. Seems like it would depend on how fun the games are that use this controller.
I think Nintendo sold a lot more Wii consoles because there was a long period of "shortages" for whatever reason (consoles being sold in Europe where currencies were stronger. etc.) and my first guess is that perhaps MS is trying to recreate some of that hype for their own product.
Almost...the automotive stuff (aka "telematics") was consolidated under one roof in the Deer Park IL facility and sold to a German company called Continental.
Do you know why I cringe when I hear these stories? Because their going after the wrong thing with the wrong tactics,
Yep. Why are these morons taking my cigar cutter, lighter, nail clippers, etc. when I board an airplane? You could probably think of a thousand different ways to fashion a blade or weapon out of other common items that are assumed "safe". In the meantime you can read mnay, many stories of people sneaking fake bombs onto airplanes.
Why bother with creating a new iris? Maybe someone could figure out how to replicate the iris of someone with no criminal history that you could have imprinted on a contact lens...
This idea lends itself better to catching known criminals, fugutives, etc. It's not meant to read the intent of a person boarding a plane.
Also, why assume you would be scanned only when boarding or de-planing?
Funny, never knew there was a word for this. Yes the rest of the students in the class wish you would just STFU so we can get through the lecture and on with our lives! Cockbaiter!
Maybe if we started trying to teach science in Sunday school these people would stop trying to cram the latest fashionable interpretation of the jesus meme down everyone's throats and schools could get back to the business of educating and learning. Probably not though.
Isn't this why they fed christians to the lions? For trying to force everyone to "get saved" or whatever?
This is a blatant extension of the reigious right "culture war" into the classroom at the expense of the students.
I wanted to "learn UNIX" to beef up my resume but wasn't sure how to go about it
Windows had a very constraining feel to it. I felt like I'd learned all I could about it and was bored
Linux was free and I could not keep up with the Windows price tag
I came across the Volkerding Slackware book at a local bookshop and started from there
I tried RedHat in 2000-ish for about 6 months but was frustrated by RPM and a few other minor reasons. I enjoyed OpenBSD for a couple years too. I was more of a Linux zealot than I'd like to admit for a while. Now I just want to "get stuff done". Windows is great if I want to play games (it's good to have a pal at MS to avoid high prices!). Pretty much everything else I do now at home/work/school on a Sun workstation with all the open source goodies. I still run my services like mail, web, etc. on Slackware. Once in a while I use a Mac just because I think they are slick.
Hmm well I went and looked it up and 5V is for a line in use while 48V is for a line that is not in use. And the ring is actually a lot higher and not DC.
For our towers in the city limits of several cities, we're not allowed to use generators
Care to cite some sources on that? I find it exceedingly hard to beilive.
I know for a fact that for some sites it is not practical to use a generator. Let's say you have a "highway site" sitting near an offramp somewhere, okay that's one thing. But let's say you have a "rooftop site" where your only access is up the elevator to the top floor and then several sets of stairs, maybe walking across catwalks and what have you once you get outside. It's just not practical to 'copter in a generator so I can see why a battery with a six hour life might be much more affordable/practical.

I was curious about the wireless providers.
From TFA you posted it looks like they are saying since the blackout exceeded 6 hours they were not able to keep the sites up. I'm positive they don't have the staff or the equipment to get a generator to every cell site. So they are a long way from "replacing" land lines if you ask me. I know most of the wireless providers have one or two COWs (cell on wheels) in the case of a single site going down but still not enough of these to make a difference. Also I guess some sites stayed up but ran out of channels since cals would get through every so often.
Difference with landlines is the power comes from the CO (obviously you knew that). You can put a huge generator at the CO and everyone is set since phone is at +5Vdc and only gets up to +30Vdc while it's ringing IIRC. So it's a lot easier for them I guess.
Interesting stuff, sorry for OT I just got curious........
Actually, they do have very large diesel generators for the switch rooms, and plenty of battery/generator for the switch room and sites. But it could be a carrier I'm not familiar with? Which carrier was it and where did you hear about this?
Admittedly part of my reservation about having ICANN overseen solely by the US is the problems that could arise if you had an administration that was, oh I dunno, let's say they were decidedly hostile to anyone who disagreed with them for example.
Not all regulation and beauracracy (sp?) is bad, right? I'm no expert on the UN but I tend to feel they are probably not the right group for administering this. There could actually be a group that was comprised of a variety of countrys/viewpoints, and in my ideal scenario this would allow for bigger and better things, not just unilateral decisions like ".xxx is bad" and suddenly ICANN "decides" to hold off on implementing it for an indefinite period of time.
The (your?) idea of each country controlling their own DNS is interesting too and I think exploring it further would be prudent.
Ah sorry, I should have used the word control rather than input there. Thanks for catching that. The ICANN should be overseen by a multinational group rather than the United States Department of Commerce.
This is pretty much the same thing I wanted to reply to the FP. Only thing I think is missing is for us to notice that what the Internet is today is far different than what it was in its infancy. It's become a valuable, viable conduit for communicating ideas, socializing and social commentary, and even a new channel for business, and more.
In my opinion, if it is going to be used by everyone, and affect everyone to varying degrees, we should probably think about letting everyone have some input. Also I think the UN might not be the best group to give more control .
At the heart of this international political spat is the unique influence that the U.S. federal government enjoys over Internet addresses and the master database of top-level domain names--a legacy of the Internet's origins years ago. The Bush administration recently raised objections to the proposed addition of.xxx as a red-light district for pornographers, for instance, a veto power that no other government is able to wield.
So did you miss this, or are you disagreeing with it?
Anyway, this is no longer a uniquely American enterprise. Yes, the US innovated it but maybe it's time to consider opening up the control a little bit? I'm not personally in favor of the UN "taking over" but I think it is time for this discussion to happen in the interest of seeing the Internet continue to evolve.
I bought a Sony Vaio because I was impressed with thier video and audio equipment I already owned. I had several problems with it and in each case the (automated?) reply from the "support" group was "please reinstall WinME". Needless to say I will not be buying any more Sony computers in my lifetime.
It seems to me that homestead acts in the 1800s really drove the development and settlement of the American west, could something similar drive private space exploration?
I wish. Orbital flight is a far cry from saving up your pennies for a covered wagon that you can hook your plow horse to and start a new life out west. Not to mention the strangehold that certain companies will have probably have on the air/water market on the moon, no matter how many space-flight start-ups actually succeed in getting humans onto the moon.
Sounds like an apples to oranges comparison. The Chinese are just coming into their own and just don't seem to be as communist as the Soviets were. More socialist than anything I'd wager, and my guess is that the mainland will only become more like Taiwan and Hong Kong as the days pass. This will be the century the Chinese really start to dominate, and I for one welcome...ah *ahem*.
Let's just say it another way, bought anything at WalMart lately? Flip it over and you'll probably see "made in China" stamped on it.

Dang it, there goes my Sarah Palin joke.

Still curious to know what school you are attending?

Me too me too... Two and four year old boys *loved* Flushed Away and the Wallace & Grommit shorts and movie.
Funny, never knew there was a word for this. Yes the rest of the students in the class wish you would just STFU so we can get through the lecture and on with our lives! Cockbaiter!
Wow, thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess it was just a bit of wishful thinking on my part.
Maybe if we started trying to teach science in Sunday school these people would stop trying to cram the latest fashionable interpretation of the jesus meme down everyone's throats and schools could get back to the business of educating and learning. Probably not though.
