Don't forget that one of the primary reasons for choosing a more mainstream language instead of a more "niche" language like Smalltalk: The Readers.
Somebody has to read and grade the AP tests. Readers are obviously easier to find for more mainstream language than for not.
Also keep in mind that it will be easier for students (and teachers) to find information and books on a language like Java than for a language like Smalltalk.
Do you think maybe we could start including the list price in the summary box at the beginning of each review? I hate having to make several clicks at times just to check to see what the price of a book is on the linked book site (thinkgeek,fatbrain,etc.). It would be highly useful to me in deciding whether I want to go purchase this book immediately or want to wait for the library to pick it up.

From the paragraph right after mentioning support for "banning":
"If young people are seen as adversely affected, people see a need to step in," Shah said. "They want to restrict some forms of content and they want to do it at the point of access and not at the point of production. The strongest support is for restricting access of children to this kind of content."
All they are saying is that 74% of people support restricting access to pornography at access points. I support this as well. I don't want my son or daughter to be able to surf for porn at the library or at school. Slashdotter's make a big deal about how its the parent's responsibility to supervise their children. I agree. But when it is impossible for me to be supervising my child away from the home, I support this sort fo initiative. Just like I support the laws prohibiting my son from buying playboy at the local convenience store.
I was going to ask how one measured the age of harpoon wounds, then I realized that when they say harpoon "points", they actually means the age of the broken off tip of the harpoon.
Beware, Moby Dick will be coming for you Ronald P. Ahab, C.P.A
Step one: Confiscate all the assets of one William Gates.
Step two: Take out a small portion for administrative overhead and a bitchin' rave.
Step three: Pay off the national debt with Mr. Gates' money.
Step four: Use the rest of the money to fund after-school prescription hot grits programs for the children and the elderly.
There's only one problem with your solution. The current national debt is 5.5 trillion dollars. More than 55 times Gates' net worth when Microsoft was riding high, close to 100 times what he has now. In fact, all of Bill's money would barely cover the yearly interest on the national debt.
So no hot grits for our nations children. But luckily the NEA will still be able to afford a petrified statues of Miss Natalie Portman.
The problem is not the growing number of school shootings, but the growing number of school shootings of white teenagers against other white teenagers.
I lived in Philly most of my life growing up, and there were always lots of shootings and incidents in the city schools. But they were predominately in the black schools, and so nobody put up much of a fuss about it. I think it just goes to show how the media is still an ethnocentric device of the majority race of this country.
It's good to see Bob taking this stance in response to the debacle. The important part is when he admits that they made a mistake. Mistakes do happen in life, but it's the way you respond to and resolve your mistakes that makes the big difference. If RedHat learned a lesson from 7.0, then it is all well and good. Let's just keep our eye peeled to see if they screw up again.
Prof: You didn't hand in your project.
Student: It's right there.
Prof: Where? I don't see it.
Student: Right there, underneath that piece of dust.
Prof: Ah yes, I must have missed it.
I'm getting sick and tired of being moderated down for ccomments.
I like to participate in slashdot discussions, but every time I post something it seems, I get mod'ed down to 1 because my post is overrated. What's the fucking point of the plus 1 bonus then?
Apparently me having trouble running the software in the featured article on a specific os is of no interest to anyone and therefore should be fucked straight to hell.
I hate bullshit moderators who strike anything down because it's not their fancy instead of basing their decisions on any bit of intelligence.
First off - fuck AT&T and all their telemarketers with a wire brush. (Fuck all telemarketers with a wire brush, but start with AT&T's. When you're done with the rest of the telemarketers, give AT&T's another go-around with the wire brush.)
We'll just go in alphabetical order. It's easier that way and AT&T still get's taken care of fairly quickly.
This was not a legal ruling by the judge and sets no legal precedent whatsoever. Since Streambox agreed to an OUT-OF-COURT settlement. Think for a second about what that means. Obviously Streambox realized they didn't have a leg to stand on and decided to settle rather than fight. This gives no weight to anything since the decision will never be on the books for precedent.
I bought one of those Microsoft Optical Mice for $37.99. After using it for a couple of days, I decided I really liked it and ordered one for home. Price: $41.74
A couple of people at work liked it too and orders one. One got it for $39.18 and the other for $42.23 when they ordered it on the same day less than an hour apart.
Man, I wish I had a Beowulf cluster of these.

15K? That's absurd. The last time I had mod points, the stret value of crack was around $3.00 a rock.
Yes, but this is for some 500,000 hits a month! A bargain compared to your price of ($3.00 * 500,000) $1.5 million.

And here I thought it was gonna be a book about the Spice Girls...
Just 5 words? Wow. I guess I've always been too verbose in trying to explain the ramifications of my submissions.

If Al Gore created the internet, and the internet causes violent crime, then logically Al Gore causes violent crime!
Come to think of it, I don't really remember to many school shootings before Clinton and Gore came to power.

since some troll begged for it:
"Can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of these simulators?"
Which means I won't be able to play it at work all afternoon. Damnit!
The source is available on the site. Why not add it in?
Hackers.... Start you editors!
Another problem I've run into is this:
Web Page checks to see if I'm using IE, nope.
Checks to see if I am using Netscape 4.x, nope.
So none of the javascript gets called. I've tried a few of these pages where if I take out the browser checking, the script works fine.
...and lots of it.

Win4Lin retails at $35.
VMWare retails for $300.
If I'm only using it for casual Office use and other such sundries (solitaire), then the choice is already made for me.

If people keep going around fixing things before they become problems, what are the scriptkiddie haxxors of tomorrow gonna do to keep themselves busy?
