  1. AOL and Matchbox Internet Appliance on AOL/Gateway/Transmeta Team for Internet Appliance · · Score: 2

Hey, if they can make these things cheap enough, maybe AOL will just start sending Matchbox computers to everyone in the mail just like they used to send CD's. Just think, in a month, you'd have enough for a Beowulf cluster.

"Given public concerns about privacy issues in this era of advanced and constantly changing technology, I have chosen an approach that addresses future threats to privacy," she said.

I don't see how dismantling this current project is really addressing future threats. The change of an administration can change this policy fully and this decision will have had no effect whatsoever.

The other thing that strikes me as strange, is that there wasn't really a big protest about this database, it was simply people asking to see their data which caused them to shut it down. Why does the government not want the people to know what the government knows about them? That is the thing that scares me.

  7. Bell Atlantic on Thoughts On Third-Party DSL Providers? · · Score: 1

The problem may be Bell Atlantic in general. We get our DSL directly from them and the service just royally sucks. There are often times during the day when things are flaky and service requests are always slow. So it comes as no surprise to me that your third-party service through them is even worse. Unfortunately for me, it's my only high-speed access option, so I have to put up with it.

And you thought laws were difficult in the first place. What happens when a law, which is clearly defined under current definitions of verbiage. What happens when people start changing the definitions of words? We need to keep our eyes on unseen effects. What if there were a law (this is a hypethetical and simplified example) which made it illegal to be a hacker. (Here where hacker is the common definition often used in the pressed.) Then all coders who deemed to take on that definition would ultimately be incriminating themselves, even though what they are doing (hacking) is nothing like the criminal behavior formerly known as hacking. What then?

Just the same as the general public understands what the press means when they call someone a "hacker." You really can't force somebody to use whatever language you see fit. Language is for understanding, and trying to replace commonly used words with nicer substitues only serves to muddy the language.

  24. The Need for Speed on What Will The Internet Of The Future Be Like? · · Score: 1

The very first thing I envision about the future is that we will have/need much speedier access to the net. MOst people are still llanguishing on dial-ups. DSL is a step in the right direction. But I forsee in the future almost instantaneous access to all information. It may not be truly instantaneous, but the perception of so: Streaming video/audio, etc.

The second thing I'd be looking for is a better interface. The browser metaphor really is at the edge of its abilities. Whatever interface comes along will be amazing compared to the abilities of today. As I'm typing this, there is an ad for those I-Glasses from thinkgeek which let you immerse yourself in your computing environment. That is totally cool. Add to that some sort of VR input device and you would be sitting pretty for interacting with the new interface, whatever it may be.

The last thing I envisage happening is that the "One Great Internet" will really be split up into several specialized networks. We've seen it happen before in other areas. Specialization vs. Generalization. I can't imagine in what ways things will be split up, but it will happen.
