Sure the war in Afghanistan was justified - it's turning out to be a bit of a mess but at least the original motiviations were understandable. The motivation for the war in Iraq had nothing to do with the war against Al-Qaeda - I really am at a loss to understand what the US and US governments were thinking when we invaded Iraq.

I tend to take the opposite view, as a long time Java developer (nearly 10 years) one thing that I like about the .Net framework is that it is generally designed a bit more coherently than the equivalent Java components.

Of course, this is probably because Java has been around for 10+ years and .Net is maybe half that so .Net hasn't had the chance to accumulate the cruft that Java has. Give it time!

The sources for the current version are in the GPL - but that is no guarantee that future versions of MySQL (or any other GPL-ed system) have to be released under the GPL. If they have 100% of the copyright they can do anything they want and my understanding is the MySQL have been careful to keep their codebase "clean" so that any external contributions have copyright assigned to MySQL or are simply rewritten.

The GPL ensures that people who use the code with a GPL license have to keep the system "free" but AFAIK it doesn't place any real restrictions on the copyright holders.

The good thing about Mono is that it gives me the opportunity to port my Windows-focused open-source project (Perspective a GPL-ed WYSWIYG Wiki that can search MS Office documents) to Linux. You may ask why I wanted to focus on Windows? So that plenty of people will use it.
