Too bad it runs like ass on my computer.

Firefox 1.0 Released

· Score: 0, Flamebait
P4 1.5GHz, 768mb RAM. Firefox (other iterations, inclusing this new one from which I am writing this) is slow, painfully so. And takes ages to render pages.
I actually dislike MacOSX very much, so no I haven't showed it to her =\. Perhaps I should, though. But then I'll just have to hear about "why didn't you tell me this before I spent $2,000 !%#"
Well mine is a bit more upmarket than a PII/333 (but not much):p It's a P3/800/512MB running FreeBSD and yes, WindowMaker:)
I do all my stuff on this computer. I set up Xandros for her on one of my others but she absolutely refused to touch it. Only recently did I manage to tear her away from WinME and get her onto w2k. Then she goes and buys a machine with XP Home on it. I despair sometimes. Really, I fucking despair =\
Still, at least I got her using Thunderbird for email and Firefox to browse with. I know it's a very, very small amount of progress, but hey, it's better than none.
My girlfriend did the exact same thing. She ditched her P4 1.5GHZ/512/50GB because "omg it's so slow" and bought a 3GHZ/1.5/180GB with a 19" LCS (which by the way she runs at 1024x768) strictly to browse online, read some websites and send the occasional email. It was complete overkill, and she would not be persuaded not to do it.
I just ordered one of them last night. Can't wait to see if it lives up to the hype, though anything would be better than the shitty Compaq keyboard I have at the moment:(
I recently installed Windows 2000 on my sister's computer. For some reason I forgot to disconnect the network cable ahd before I had even started to install a firewall, it was compromised.
In all seriousness, the time of first boot to compromisation was under three minutes.
I daresay it was my own fault for forgetting about the network cable, but even so...
After that, I experimented with a Unix computer connected directly to the internet instead of being behind a router, as is my normal practise. Like you said, I waited a month for it to get rooted. Never happened. Eventually I put it back behind the router.
I absolutely agree with everything you said. I am not an advocate of suing people for down/uploading music at all. I have done it myself (though admittedly I stopped uploading to all but my closest friends) and I tend to buy albums after downloading them for previews' sake.
I was just saying that illegal downloaders - i.e. those who have no intention of buying a legitimate copy of the music - are not the customer base of the record companies.
I think you meant primary through secondary, for non-Americans. At least British people anyway. Here in the UK, "grammar" school is another form of secondary/high school.
I second that. I was a user of Trillian Professional and was most impressed, but after finding out about Miranda I never bought another copy of Trillian.
Yes, I agree with that. Here in Scotland I know a guy with a PhD in theoretical physics who drives a cab simply because in this country there are not many opportunities for theoretical physicists.
There was also a big story in the news here recently about a geneticist who gave up his amazingly crappy paid research job to become a gas fitter, for double or treble the money. it is the same principle, I would imagine.
... I think I'll put on a Free OS (recomendations? It is a Celeron 756mhz Dell).
I just installed Yoper Linux on a 700MHz Celeron with 256mb of RAM and it works beautifully. I originally heard about it on/. a few days ago. It is everything it says it is: very fast and very stable, and very easy to use. Once I've played with it for a while it will be going on my main workstation in place of Windows, for good.
It's funny you should say that. A lot of the time it's not the users' fault. I am sitting here in my office looking at a 21" flatscreen monitor which I am forced to use in 1024x768 @ 60Hz because the admins do not feel that I should change it (settings menu is disabled) and will not come and change it for me because "you don't need it."
Considering I have the same monitor at home which runs (at least) 1280x1024 @ 100Mhz, I feel like I am going blind. By the end of my day I can hardly see straight.
I would be interested to know how many of those numbers are made up by Mozilla/Opera users whose browsers are set to identify as IE, which is the default on Opera.
I am not sure about Firefox as I don't use it.
Probably the numbers would not swing the percentages to any great degree, but it would still be interesting nevertheless.
I have had my Hotmail account for near enough the same amount of time as you, and I'm still on the 2mb service. I received a Gmail invite from my friend and checked it out, and I have to say that besides the amount of space, it is not that impressive.
Besides, I use my own domain email for important stuff anyway and I have every important email safely backed up on my array. I do not like the idea of my important mail being on someone else's box, however reputable they may be.

I think I'll stick with Opera.

[...] it was rather painfully slow, on a duron 1.6ghz + 256MB ddr box.
That's strange. I installed it on a P3 700MHz with 256mb of ram and it was fast.
I got it from here and it was the 1391401 :)

It's that big blue E. Duh!

Yes, it doesn't crash horribly or use enormous amounts of RAM, unlike win32 gAIM.

I apologise for not making that clear.
No, you didn't. I remember the collection you're talking about, and this is different.
People who illegally download mp3s are /not/ the customer base.
"Customer" implies some kind of transaction has taken place, not downlaoding a track from a p2p network.
I think you meant primary through secondary, for non-Americans. At least British people anyway. Here in the UK, "grammar" school is another form of secondary/high school.
It still is only 2mb. Well, for me anyway. And I've had my @hotmail since about 1998.
Evidently you've not been introduced to the delights of www.lemonparty.org

-1? I guess one of the usual brainless mods got up on the wrong side of their semen-encrusted bed this morning.
But how is one supposed to take them seriously when their "installing UserLinux" section is actually a link to goat.cx?
If you don't believe me, go here and click "See installing UserLinux"
I would like to see Opera support. I had to re-install IE to access Gmail, a task which I was thoroughly unimpressed with.
