The process model in Vista is no different than in XP.

And yes, *nix is generally process-oriented while NT kernels have always favored threading. Having written lower-level software for both platforms (ie daemons/services but not drivers and things like that) I cannot honestly see the benefits of one over the other for most processing-type scenarios, though I assume that there are types of applications that do benefit from a specific model.

SciFi and fantasy literature are not 30 years old.

One of my high school teachers once told me that pretty much everything can eventually be traced back to Shakespeare or the Bible.

I have to say I'm actually for this judgment. Copyright issues aside, and the always amusing cries of "greed", I think it's important that something like the Potter concept remain under the control of the original author.

Who knows, maybe Rowling will see the value in collaboration with her readers and fans and create a wiki or something.

One of those highly reliable deals you mention, except that it wasn't so reliable. Since I know those platforms are reliable, then there must be something wrong with the LSE, maybe.

Third, IIRC this whole deal was developed by one of the Big5 consulting boys, no doubt outsourced half out to India. Not that Indian developers are not good, it's usually the process that sucks.

So no, starting off your argument with "quicksand" analogies and "negligence" claims is probably not a good idea.

After all, you posted this on a website that survives largely thanks to posting these kinds of stories. I'd probably wait a few days, yah? I'd hate to think all the MC apps I've written in the past 6 years or so are in some sort of danger just because they run on .NET/Windows Server.

If you want "special" fonts on your web pages, you're going to have to accept some form of DRM. Font designers are not going to allow their creations to be installed and used for free on a million PCs. That, regardless of whether a font can be considered a form of IP or not, etc.

The question here is whether or not we want the special fonts. To me personally, the answer is no. Some people might feel differently, and so this might be a good option for them. Choice is important, as I am constantly told by the same people who think DRM is evil. As long a I can opt out of installing the font, just as I can opt out of installing an add-on I don't want, then fine. It's up to me to decide whether the degradation (if any) is acceptable.

As to how this is "slimy", I leave it to the "badvista" and "defectivebydesign" champions to create another series of cute FSF-sponsored attack blogs to explain in minute detail and clever creating spelling the why of it to everyone, whether we are interested or not.
