Run the video/RAM/CPU intensive graphics application on the host OS. Suspend the VMs first; then restore when you are done with the graphics work. Then the choice of VM platform is irrelevant since you won't require specialized hardware support for applications in the VM.
Use the VM for all those other dangerous apps such as Web Browsing, email, Facebroke, Flitter, hosting a web server, etc.

You make a false assumption on the expense associated to the time spent searching. If this time is "expensed" uniquely as cost associated looking for a single asset, then one could argue your point. But, if the time "expensed" looking for books has another more important function [getting out of the house, small diversion from other shopping, enjoying the hunt], then the expense is nearly zero. If the time "expensed" is nearly zero, any books found will then have a return on time invested which is extremely high.
Cheaper has proper meaning only if you include all the cost inputs, not just the "time expensed".

The IT staff would probably be very interested to help. But, research scientists are notorious for unwillingness to describe the work in any but the most esoteric terminology. Any attempts to clarify or redefine the information provided by the research scientist leads to denigrating attitudes and/or tirades on how the IT staff cannot change the whole concept of the work and are idiots. If this first hurdle is overcome, then the obstacle of informing the research scientist we are not his/her full-time lab assistant; and cannot devote 100% of our time to their project. Any attempt to limit our involvement after initial buy-in is met with various immature and pedantic attitudes.
Good research scientists budget money for development support and use it effectively. The majority of research scientists would rather suffer in silence/isolation and hack at the work themselves than attempt to work with other professionals with differing mindsets.

As my body has aged and certain chemical levels change, my daily cycle is rotating closer to 0600 - 2100. Previously, no amount of mental "force", routine, or healthy chemicals could cause me to be alert and active before 1100; or fall asleep before 0200. The working hours society has standardized on are a legacy of an agrarian economy.
The network for the city of San Francisco will now be managed forever by an outsourced company with a phalanx of lawyers. No single individual will ever accept the liability of the clusterf@&! which is San Francisco bureaucracy. The cost of this trial is minuscule to the ongoing costs which will be incurred paying for outsourced network overhead.
