I've always found the "to protect and serve" on police cars to be intensely ironic considering that they do neither.
Modern police serve mainly to try to keep the peace and to clean up after crimes. They come into most situations and arrest whoever is causing the most ruckus or is most uncooperative. They act like frustrated, tired parents who just want some quiet when they come home from work. Right and wrong mean a lot less then just getting everyone out of their hair.
Then comes the counselor act, where the cops show up after a crime. They assure everyone the that criminal will be caught (rare unless they are caught in the act of another crime) and clean up the mess a bit after pretending to care for a bit.
I'm sure my contempt for the police shows in this post, but I really do believe that as a whole we need more control of the people we allow to walk among us with guns.
Right, just like the idea of a bunch of South East Asian farmers holding off the best trained and richest army in the world for years is ridiculous. Or the concept of partisans in a poor Middle Eastern country consistantly attacking and killing our occupying soldiers.
The type of weapons matters less than the fact that you have them and are willing and able to use them in defense of your country. That's how this country was founded, on the efforts of regular citizens turned soldier or guerilla fighter.
If someone who has reaped as much wealth from music as McCartney thinks that there is something wrong with the current system, other people may take this more seriously and copy his actions.
His statement will probably not make a huge difference, but it is a good indicator of a shift in general opinion about the music industry.
Unfortunately in most of the U.S. diesel is currently more expensive than "regular" unleaded gas. While you may save money with your mileage, most folks don't look that far down the road.
Also, many are still stuck with the concept of a diesel vehicle being like a semi truck, big noisy and letting off clouds of stinky diesel smoke. Modern diesels can be none of the above, but the perception remains.
Their system allows you to set different "stations"
Each station gives you the ability to add a few different types of music, but it's not recommended that you try to mix radically different types. You'll have to use old fashioned judgement to choose a broad category you want to listen to, it does the rest of the work exploring similar music.
Interesting that there was no mention of Cryptic Studio's game, City of Heroes http://www.cityofheroes.com/ Recently hit the 200,000 subscriber mark and is still going strong.
So far CoH is a nice change from any other MMORPG that I have played. No items, no player economy, no camping and lots of action. Hopefully the fun factor in this game will influence new games in the future to think outside the box...
Does anyone know if this is legal? I mean, this is like bringing a shoe into court and saying "I found this shoe on my lawn, I want to sue the person who left it there because I'm pretty sure they crapped on my lawn" Even if logs match up, will an IP address be enough proof, even in a civil case?
The interesting upshoot of this has been that when governments actually commission a study on the total cost of ownership for a Linux/Open Source solution, they find switching is to their benefit
Microsoft's is doing it's best to keep the bleeding to a minimum, but more companies and governments are realizing that moving away from their dependency on MS is a Good Thing(tm)
Actually if you RTFA, the author advicates using the process of thinking outside the box in order to stimulate thought. Training yourself to "think outside the box" is only a step in order to evaluate ideas that you might normally take for granted and hopefully generate some genuine ideas instead of simple regurgitation of the norm.

We just need to bring bloodbowl to life. Nothing better than a treeman with a chainsaw to entertain the masses.

Actually, it was a plague that targeted room temperature superconductors that took out the Ringworld civilization...
I do agree that the Ringworld books are a must read for any sci-fi fan. Louis Wu is my hero!
Actually, I think this is very significant.

Paul Grahm wrote an explaination of why this sort of random introduction of words into spam doesn't fool a good Bayesian filter in this article.
So Far, So Good
The more they try to fool the filter, the better the filter becomes at recognizing this sort of "random" word placement. Interesting read.

I would think watching it from back to front would be actually considered a punishment.
