    You can also make an analogy to government using the parent's ideas. Would you rather have an open, transparent government where you can inspect each and every process or would you rather have a closed, secretive government where anything can happen without your knowledge?

    Why make a TV that will last 25 years when I can sell you a high end plasma that you will have to replace in 5 years?
    I see it this way. If I make a good product that lasts 20 years, and my competitors' products only last 5, then I'm going to market the hell out of that. I'll end up outselling my competitors because I simply have a MUCH better product. Less sales for them, more for me.

    Sure, I don't make as much money, but neither will they. All those people with my 20-year product aren't just not buying from me - they're not buying from everyone else. In terms of competition, I win and I've still made money. Over time, if I keep this up, the competition will go away and I'll be the big player on the block.

    Highly unlikely. A lot of science has been mired in politics or religion. The earth going around the sun; The earth being flat; Contraceptives; Stem cell research. Science is part of culture and it has to interact with it accordingly. It will never escape from politics or religion - and I'm not certain that it should.

    If the video game was all about "day to day boredom" I don't think it would be much of a game.

    I also think that a lot of people are missing that point. It is a video agme. It is intended to be fun and, apparently, show off some weapons that the military has in an effort to recruit people. Do you think it would be an effective recruitment tool if it was impossible to win, or if the game was boring? No. Just sounds like a bunch of anti-America zealots looking for anything they can do to criticize the country. When they start attacking video games that's when I have to stop taking them seriously.

    Exactly. It has created a business for someone; That helps the economy. Other helpful technologies include the microwave, advances in ceramics, long distance communications, and specialized plastics. All of that technology eventually comes to the general public. Space program is costly but well worth the money.

    I agree, though; The project is ambitious, and without the proper funding I'm not sure that it will happen. The Democratic party tends to spend more on socialism^H^H^H programs. We'll see, though. I think that everyone can see that R&D in the space program has created enormous benefits for everybody. Hopefully NASA will get the funding it needs and more.

    Allowing people to use Linux while playing WoW is certainly in Blizzard's interest
    Is it? How many people play WoW under Linux, anyways? I'm guessing not a whole lot. Compare the income from those few players to the time and resources it would take to figure out what the problem is, find a solution, test it, and deploy it. Dealing with the issue could very well end up in a loss of money.

    So, I'm not sure that it is in their best interests, at least on a purely financial basis. Maybe you should let BLizzard decide since, after all, they have the best idea as to what its best interests are.

    Maybe I'm just poor (I live in New York state, we get taxed to death here), but I don't think HDTV will be "the norm" in 4-5 years. They're still too expensive, and unless people have a compelling reason to buy one (Lots of disposable income, TV breaks) then chances are they're going to keep their older sets around. They work just fine for watching TV and movies. Why spend an extra $1,000+ for HDTV when my cheap $100 box lets me watch things just fine?

    Excuse my curiosity... But what on earth are you doing that you need to have 200 tabs open spread across multiple browsers? That would make my mind explode, not to mention if I was looking for a particular tab I would be sucking down cases of Geritol before I found it. ~(o:

    I try to have as few open at all times. This is because it makes finding the RIGHT window difficult, and trying to ALT+TAB through them all takes an eternity. When I am at work, I have:

    Firefox, Outlook, Zend Studio (or other editor), 2 terminals

    Anything else that I use is opened on an as-needed basis. When I see some of the other developers at work with a half dozen browser windows (not tabs - windows), four terminals, an editor, email client, a few instances of notepad, a database GUI, maybe an HTML editor, etc... Then, when they want to have me look at something, they spend so much time switching around windows trying to find what they want... How can they work like that?

    It makes my head HURT. Sometimes, a feeling akin to claustrophobia. What would that be called? horribly-cluttered-and-crowded-taskbar-aphobia? Whatever it is, I have it.

    As is often the case, less is more.

    As a PHP developer this could be a great boon for me. With Microsoft actively getting involved with PHP, perhaps more companies will consider using it. More jobs opportunities for me - whee! Maybe I can get out of Buffalo...

    That said, this confuses me a bit:

    Since when was it difficult to run PHP on Windows? I have written code that runs on both Linux and Windows machines, and, like most scripting languages, "it just works". There are a few extensions (like process control) that don't work under Windows - but the need for those extensions is very small. For a vast majority of scripting you don't need to do anything differently under Linux than you do Windows. I wish the article would have gone more in depth about these alleged problems.

    There have been several things that FireFox (or FireFox fans) have done to promote the browser; some rather mundane, such as purchasing ad space in a newspaper, while others have been unique and interesting, such as the FireFox "crop circle".

    Aside from word of mouth, what methods of advertising and promotion seem to help the most? Do you ever notice a significant increase in downloads after an advertising campaign? What are your future plans for promoting FireFox, and what weird ideas have people come up with that have had to be turned down?

    I agree completely. AM radio has way more entertaining and useful content than FM. Of course, I'm one of those weirdos who likes talk radio instead of brain-dead Top 20 stations, so... Anyways, for recording AM radio, you can get a RadioShark, but I recommend that you think carefully and read my experiences with it before making the purchase. Yes, it records AM radio, but the quality of the product in relation to the price left a bad taste in my muzzle.

    I bought a RadioShark just last month, and I made sure to update the latest version of the software from the company's website (the installer lies when it says a new version isn't available!). I had no problem recording Coast to Coast AM which is a 4 hour long program, although I do have a list of other complaints about the product. Overall, I was very kind and gave it a C-. In retrospect it should get a D+, but...

    Indeed; This is where the kids come in!

    WAY better than human children for keeping the lawn mowed. As an added bonus:
    No diaper changing
    No soccer practice
    No bed time
    No car or driving lessons
    No college tuition
    You can sell them or give them away at any time
    They can give you milk
    They're cute
    They don't smell NEARLY as bad
