Anyways, I haven't run into a single problem with it yet, and this is on three machines; One at work, two at home. I find it to be faster and more usable than 1.5. All the plugins that I use work fine, too (then again, I only use three). Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.

    Two things.

One, make sure you have a strong foundation in OO programming. Yes, I know; PHP isn't strictly OO, but the structure and discipline it takes to write code in an OO language will help you out immensely since you can apply a lot of the same principles.

PHP isn't a great first language. It is extremely loose and it is easy to form bad habits early. But, if you are disciplined, you can rapidly produce good, reusable code.

Second, learn some database theory - especially normalization. A great book that I still refer to is "Database Systems: A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation, and Management" by Thomas Connolly and Carolyn Begg.

So, ultimately, the best advice to a person just starting with PHP/MySQL is to get a good foundation in the fundamentals of programming and database systems.

Once you have that, it doesn't matter what language or DBMS you use.

I, too, have had similar problems with a few of my posts. I tend to agree with the Liberatarian philosophy more than anything else - which means I get attacked by both Conservatives (who see me as liberal) and Liberals (who see me as conservative), depending on the issue. It is very frustrating to have a post that is +3 insightful, informative one moment, then the next is flooded with flamebait and overrated mod points until it disappears completely.

It's too bad, really. *I* make an effort to read opposing viewpoints, and if they make some good observations then they get my mod points. It doesn't mean that I have to agree with them. I guess I'm a rare case.

Getting back more on topic with the OP, I suppose that if you want to have a moderation system you have to trust the moderators. Hey, that's not such a bad idea, actually... A trust-based moderation system. People can moderate posts as they see fit. However, people whose moderation you trust have a greater impact for you than everyone else.

I suppose that SlashDot has this to a degree, in that trusted moderators are choosen on a community scale; ie, moderators that is meta-moderated as appropriate are more likely to get moderation points, and as such, they have a greater capability to affect future moderation.

The more I think about the moderation system here the more I realize that it is pretty good. Open to abuse, sure - like my experience above - but pretty good. I'm guessing that the people who Troll-modded my posts will get their meta-moderated karma backlash in good time.

Let's say that is does. Is this a bad thing? I feel that buying a game directly from the game company, say through Steam or one of those download services, is GREAT. The company that makes the game gets more money for what they worked for, instead of the publisher taking a big ass cut. Sounds good to me.

He also seems to feel, somehow, that game companies are all going to be releasing their new games under a GameTap subscription service, only getting a marginal amount of money from the monthly subscription fee. That's a bit insane. What company would release, say, Doom 3 under a subscription service like GameTap when they can make a buttload more money selling it as a single product?

When demand falls and they're not making much THEN they might move their product to a subscription service.

This whole article, AFAIC, is a bunch of FUD.
