Its not like we are cutting off a public utility to the lower class. All this would do is cut off their free entertainment until they saved up $150 for a new television.
Broadcasting analog video over the airwaves is wasteful and stupid in this day and age. The only reason we have been putting up with 1950's technology for so long is because of the huge installed base.
Dircect downloads shouldn't be the next big thing. There is nothing futuristic about this concept. Bandwidth is cheap enough now that highspeed connections are not much more expensive than dialup isp accounts. I am sure the bandwidth used for video would be much cheaper than mailing dvds around the country.
If it takes 20 years for the infrastructure of entertainment industry to catch up, the United States will most certainally lose its worldwide monolopy on entertainment.
The one of the main reasons that the America is "The Great Satan" to the Islamic Fundamentalists is because of our domination of the worldwide entertainment industry and how this spreads American culture throughout the world.
Now we are supposed to believe that these same people are distributing American entertainment to those that otherwise can't afford it or wouldn't buy it?
Back in 1985 a man named Dowling was prosecuted for the Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property for selling infringing copies of Elvis records. U.S. Supreme Court in DOWLING v. UNITED STATES, 473 U.S. 207 (1985) http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?n avby=search&court=US&case=/us/473/207.html struck this down because copyright infringement is not theft.
You have to deprive your victim of the item in order to steal it from them. Making copies doesn't deprive anyone of what it being copied, therefore its not theft.
I don't believe this exploit will alow old widget files to be written over so this will stop the ability to trick users into opening them. If I open my Dashboard and I see a strange new widget that I never installed, I am sure as hell not going to open it.
I am sure Apple will release a security update in a day or two.
I am glad I decied to show up for the Time Travelers' Convention a week early. I have been spending the last few hours reading the news. Apparently George W. Bush is the President of the United States and over 90% the home computers in the world are run by Microsoft operating systems. This demonstrates the dangers of time travel. I hope all the 'geniuses' at M.I.T. are proud of themselves. Anyway, I am off to try try and fix things. You people can keep this strange altrernate reality.
I think the problem is more the lack of games on Macs. For most high school kids, a computer is nothing more than an expensive video game system.

If you hate the Dashboard and want to get rid of it, just throw Dashboard.app into the Trash and it will never launch again.

Now parents that want to see the movie have an excuse they can tell their employers when asking for May 19th off.
