Ha, I bought lunch at Burger King yesterday and couldn't even buy a milkshake for dessert without raising suspicion and an ID check due to running a second transaction too soon after the first. Compared to cash, electronic payment has far more options for preventing theft.
Actually this whole thread sounds *exactly*like what people were saying 14 years ago, how they would NEVER shop on the World Wide Web.
Yes, I've been burned recently by the velocity algorithms w/ my debit card...buy gas at the pump, then go inside the quickymart to buy beer. It's funny that the algorithms I worked on when I worked at an anti-fraud software company a few years ago came back to bite me...
He's wrong about that. You are supposed to have a driver's license with you to drive a car. In most states, if you don't have one you can get cited for that. BUT if you go to the police station later and produce a valid license they will cancel the citation.
As for situations other than driving: in most of the U.S. (a couple of states have some weird exceptions), you do not have to identify yourself to police unless they have probable cause to believe you were involved in a crime. They can ask, but you don't have to comply.
I couldn't imagine leaving the house without some id...whether I'm driving or not.
On the large-scale web application my company has been working on for 3 years, we used Flash for the front end (Flex for some front end parts), and JBoss on the middle tier with EJBs and an Oracle database.
A big, complex system with thousands of moving parts, so to speak..
I still don't see what advantage(s) have Java open-sourced would bring. I've been developing substantial server-side applications in Java since '95 (pretty much my exclusive language since then, except for a brief foray into C and Perl on one project in '02).
I see the utility of and use various open source libraries and applications for Java (JBOSS, Apache Commons, etc), but Java itself?
Internet hunting, eh? Strangest thing I've heard of in a while. I've never quite gotten the appeal of real hunting...always looked boring to me. My folks have always had problems with hunters on their weekend place (250 acres in wooded, hilly eastern Ohio).
Even something like watching football on TV seems more entertaining to me than hunting.
I like S. Florida also..grew up there (Marathon in Monroe County in the Keys to be exact). I've lived in Ohio, Michigan, Arizona, and now Colorado since then. Thinking of moving to California now..
Hilarious...sick and twisted.
I'll admit, though, when I left a large corporate telecom job a few years ago, I disliked my boss so much that I had the urge to go have a big lunch at an Indian buffet then come back and have a firehose diahreea BM all over his cube...:)
I left on good terms though.
I saw a picture somewhere of a 'tuned' case with Type-R badges, a wing on the top, and big tail pipes on the vents...covered with decals...hilarious...perfect thing for the kid with the loud 'tuner' Civic..
I live in Denver... I'm not sure when or if I would use public WiFi though..it's not like I walk around with my laptop all the time... I use a computer at work and at home.
I did the cheap car thing in college, but in recent years have treated myself to nicer cars...a $45k BMW, a $30k Jeep, and a Mustang I've had since high school are currently depreciating in my garage..
I thought the same thing..that is the only context I know of N-guage from. I'm not a train guy, but understand scales and guage in the modeling context (being a car model builder/collector, mostly 1:24th and 1:25th scale kits, but also 1:43, 1:64, 1:18th etc diecast).
Mass transit just wouldn't work for me..I commute from the Denver suburbs into the city (just outside of downtown). From my neighborhood, I'd have to drive to a park-and-ride to catch a bus. Not practical.
Commuting in my cars or my SUV is just more practical for me.
Wouldn't work, I would think..if you reside in Ca you would need to register your cars in Ca.
I've been looking at moving to So Cal from Colorado, and I would need to register my 3 cars there (Jeep, Mustang, BMW), unless I keep my condo in Denver as a vacation residence maybe..

Heck, I've never even done that..never had a compelling reason to...and I'm a techie..
Cool....so this will be classified as a Class M planet, I believe?
Yes... and worse than gas is SHD...spontaneous human diarreha.. I get it too frequently, esp. after eating spicy curries...

We have a lot of them here in Colorado...a very scary group...I think some of them view Bush second only to Jesus in their hero-worship.
Probably been done before, but a compact fridge with a computer inside (and some lager) would be both practical and interesting...

I wouldn't trust the '00 or '04 Florida results..remember hanging chads? I assume both of those elections were rigged, what with Jeb being the gov..

I take my passport with me anytime I go outside the US now, so why should it be any different with Canada?

I learned long ago to regard anything that conservatives believe with suspicion. They are dangerous, esp. the religious ones.

The nice thing about history is it's all in the past.
Well, I live in Colorado but own a 150 acre farm in the hills of eastern Ohio... so I'm ready..
As with spamming, certain kinds of malicious hacking probably should warrant the death penality....
Maybe similar in interior size, but the new Prius is a much smaller and lighter car than the Camry.
