    I've kicked caffeine cold turkey for specified periods of time - e.g. exam term, when I needed to sleep well. I only had withdrawal symptoms the first time. So yes, if I wanted to I could quit it again.

    Sure, but the question has always been whether shrinkwrap EULAs are contracts, given that their model of offer-and-acceptance differs hugely from that of all other contracts.

    You didn't point out one of the cons with the British system of first past the post and parliamentary election: a party can win a solid majority of seats even though a different party won a solid majority of votes. (The winning party can then look silly by claiming to have a mandate to rule - some mandate!)

    The bytecode does work. It's only the class version number which doesn't. Every new version of Java has incremented the major version number of the class files produced by javac, and has provided -target to allow you to compile to an older version number.

    You're misunderstanding "backwards compatibility", by the way. It means that old class files work with 1.5 without recompilation.

    If you want to compile for older VMs, you have to use the -target compiler option. This isn't new.

    Christianity should not be politicized.
    If by this you mean that Christianity should not be treated as solely political, I agree. But it undeniably makes political statements - that's what was behind some of the earliest persecutions: witness Thessalonica. And although social action isn't the most important function of the church, it is a responsibility of the church, and it does lead into politics: where, after all, does one draw the line between the two?

    It's certainly annoying, but sometimes necessary. I dictated part of my dissertation to ViaVoice because serious RSI prevented my from typing it. Dictating LaTeX to ViaVoice is slow, but not as slow as dictating it to a typical person.
