Is copyright law about protecting lost revenue? Perhaps the punishment should be based on that.
I'm not saying for a second that we should use the RIAA's 'projected' revenue loss.
If this woman was truly guilty of stealing, then surely any revenue the RIAA would have made was being pocketed by the woman in question. Of course its very likely that there wasn't any revenue exchange.
So maybe punishment should be dictated by the market, I hears $0.79 a song is about the going rate, so a cheque for $17.38 should cover it!
I was at the back of the queue when mod points were given out, but +1 Insightful. Certainly a more interesting comment then the usual "editors can't spell" crowd.
Has anyone ever considered that they are doing it on purpose, just for the laff like. Fished in etc
Disclaimer: I use both Vista and Linux (gentoo is my preferred distribution,) and am not afraid to say that I don't hate either of them, and rather like both of them
I am in a similarly shaped boat. I've come to the belief that if one is not forced to use windows, it doesn't seem quite as bad when you do drop into a vm to perform one of the few remaining 'windows only' tasks. It's taken quite some time for the resentment to wane though.
OTOH as a web developer, I think my the disdain and hatred of IE is here to stay, but that's for another discussion!
I find it particularly ironic considering the trouble one has getting whitelisted by these two organisations in particular, when a couple of smart alec users flag you as spam, and all you have ever sent them is solicited (ie signed up for and requested) e-mail.
I've found turn based to be the only way to keep the 'rpg' thing alive. By that I'm talking about the numerous stat-builder/resource based games where you accumulate turns per 'tick' (say 30 mins) then play them in bunches.
Heck! Why not have a show devoted to developing a new setup for the station. Get the fans of the station involved. Now thats using Open Source!

I like that. I like that a lot!
To your original point:
The biggest problem I have in my day to day dealings with other companies is my inner techie wanting to give them the *best* (imho) solution, instead of just an (in?)adequate solution. The difference being that the best solution often takes a little longer and costs a bit more than the sticking plaster fix. Its sickening but these people would rather pay (say) 5grand a year *every year* than say 10-20grand to see them right for the next 10.
When, oh when, am i gonne finally take the pill that makes me not give a shit about whats best for them....
Too true. I Started on Redhat then tried slack to 'learn linux'. When I found myself continually on the gentoo forums for support I figured these guys must be on to something, I succumbed, I never looked back.
The old cliches (-09 --funroll-everything --finit-maximum-rice etc) are way off the mark - though im sure there are those who would beg to differ, and more power to them!
Gentoo to me is Portage. (+ associated tools such as emerge/eix/equery etc)
With a few changes to/etc/make.conf (largely use flags) and managing stable/unstable through/etc/portage/package.* you have the most precise, and yet easy to use, control over tuning your linux install to contain all the bits you need and none of the bits you don't.
The compile times are most definately a downside, but there are a whole bunch of ways to ease that particular gripe (screen/cron/distcc or maybe even a little patience!).
Its oft said, and oft misunderstood. If you dont like gentoo, dont use it. To start bandying accusations around about how terrible a distro it is makes me start to wonder just exactly what it is thats getting under people's skin so much. The previous comment about the author being a flamebait specialist sounds rather valid.
but why go to a billion when a thousand million is perfectly adequate?
I was going to argue that its more logical for one billion to be a million million, but then i realised that a thousand is ten hundreds and not a hundred hundred.
looks like the decimal number system is more fucked than i thought, thanks for destroying the illusion!
I'm reading this and getting to thinking about google analytics. I understand google and these cows guys aren't in the same league, I generally trust google, but thousands wouldn't.
I see that the code is clearly visible at that URL, so it may not be the same as running on affsite proprietery extension, but it seems to be a bit of a grey area. Were google to turn bad overnight then I'm there would be a some kind of delay before people realised what was up, and with the amount of sites running analytics...
I'm not scaremongering, as I don't beleive this is likely, but its an interesting thought.

Bottom Illustration is a picture of what loooks like 3 giant penises
The link underneath says "penryn's Birth"
Coincidence?
i still think she should go for $17.38

I can't beleive MS are getting such a hard time over being first to market with this..
I mean, nobody else has implemented quantum computing into their spreadsheet app yet.

Such a person would not.
However the parent to whom I was responding claimed to have 400 bookmarks syncing between several machines.
imho this implies a certain level of technical ability - certainly sufficient to set up a single page of static content somewhere on teh internets.
make the index.html non-local ?

I am new to slashdot, you insensative clod!
But what will I do with the fairies? sounds risky to me.
Not all European locales use the comma as the decimal indicator. The UK uses the decimal point (or period if you prefer!) ...

The only other thing would be something like PBeM
:D
its a beauty!
my karma is shot to hell anyway. so here goes
I'm opensourcing access to my r-type jamma board on e-bay right now.
If one of you more-money-than-me types could see yourself clear to opensourcing your paypal account in my general direction i would be much obliged
in the meantime mod away....
Or you could harvest all the e-mails and sell them to .....
KIDDING!
You might, however, put your own life in danger!
I read these articles to feel all smug and warm. (not a mac user - a linux user, so just as 'bad'!)
I dont usually post, as I have nothing to add, but I'll make a special exception - since you asked.

Surely, in this instance it could be called a quantum leap!

I dont know exactly how to go about it off the top of my head, but im sure you could rig something up in .bashrc
Heal. Random Encounter(s). Move Location. Character Build.
FF defines repetition. I wouldn't change it for the world.

For anyone that doesnt know, analytics embeds a call to an offsite script http://www.google-anlaytics.com/urchin.js
