3 billion? So what? Linux as an embedded OS has only gained popularity in the last few years. What about all the other embedded RTOS's and OS's that have been around for years? They undoubtedly hold much more share.
To each his own I guess. I always thought they were a bit over-rated. I'd take a mediocre Dilbert cartoon over a "good" User Friendly any day of the week.
I've been a Yahoo chat user for years (5 or 6?). They have it, but not all the way back to 96. I think that feature came into Yahoo messenger only a couple years ago.
ICUII had the feature where you could see the typing of the person you were talking to. I hated it though since all your typing mistakes and erasures can be seen. I think that simply notifying someone when the other person is typing is sufficient.
Similar situation here. I write at work but it is all block-print(all caps). I can't write script anymore to save my life. My checks are practically unreadable.
I remember going to take the GRE. We had to write out this long paragraph that basically stated we wouldn't cheat. I swear that must have been the hardest part of the exam! It looked like total scribble. Somewhat embarrasing actually.
The gov't isn't ALWAYS slow. Look at how quickly they passed legislation for the do-not-call list. If 50 million people sent letters/emails to their congressmen and told them to overturn the DMCA it would be history!
Is it just me or is the use of SPEC INT2000 a little odd? They claim they use t because it is the most CPU instensive as opposed to other benchmarks that are more IO intensive. Real apps are a mix of both. Wouldn't you want to include IO performance?
How likely is it that we are going to see WinCE/.NET on small devices? These still typically use 8/16-bit micros. I would imagine WinCE requires a 32-bit micro.
Sure, prices are dropping but the smaller micros will always be cheaper. Let's face it, they're good enough for a microwave or toaster or...
Why does synchronous here imply that the up and down-stream be the same speed? I'm not a telecom guy but 256kbps and 1.8Mbps could still be synchronous to the same clock.
Not hiring SCO employees? This BS with SCO is most likely the VPs and legal staff doing. Don't blame the regular employees for any of this. It's like saying you are not going to hire MS employees because of what their leadership has done to the software world.
You might say that the SCO employees should go find other jobs in response to what their company is doing but lets not forget the economic reality right now. There aren't a million jobs out there for them to get.
Yes, that SEC filing was pretty interesting. Here is a quote:
"Due to a lack of historical experience and the uncertainties related to SCOsource licensing revenue, we are unable to estimate the amount and timing of future licensing revenue, if any. If we do receive revenue from this source, it may be sporadic and fluctuate from quarter to quarter. SCOsource licensing revenue is unlikely to produce stable, predictable revenue for the foreseeable future. "
Because they have the money to fund the studies. Now, whether or not that implies the studies are biased I can't say because I don't know the authors of these studies.
BTW, if Microsoft funded a study that concluded that Windows wasn't superior for a certain task do you think they would allow it to be published? I think not. Because of that all Microsoft funded studies (that we read) will always conclude Windows is the best.
I think what the parent was saying is what if they had someone contribute some code, but do it under an alias name or something. It would then be possible for microsoft to come back at a later time, "find" the code and then mount a lawsuit claiming that linux has it's own code/ip in it.
In the US we are allowing our manufacturing jobs to go overseas to countries with lower pay. what makes you think we won't allow robots to take fast-food restaurant jobs?
It would be amazing if their stock was at $100, since that would mean a $20 hike. But since their stock was only about $10 a share, it's not a big deal.
He gives the story of Watson vs Sherlock. But what if sherlock was someone's open source/free project. What is the difference from the viewpoint of the "sharecropper" between having the rug pulled out from under you by a new piece of software that gets added to windows and a free version that someone develops. To the end user, they both look free (as in beer of course.)
Oh, I wasn't joking. I also have a female friend that I swear must also be addicted to the news. Although her addiction centers around watching CNN at every available moment. She's not into "news for nerds" but I guess we all have our favorite brand of news.
The argument for lowering the double-taxation of dividends is that more and more often the middle class (ie most of us here) are investing our money in the stock market. It's far from true anmymore that only a handful of people can take advantage of something like this.
I don't know what world you live in but in mine when someone says something is almost finished it most certainly implies a time element. You don't go to your boss and tell him something is almost finished then take another decade to actually finish.
I think people consider the review worthless because there was no information contained in it that has not been covered elsewhere. In short, it was too short. Mentioning that you like the way the menus are arranged does not a review make.
That review was about as informative as the book reports I used to write in grade school that were entirely based off the summary printed on the back cover.

People trying to get on your good side, then backstabbing you. By far.
It's much better to know your enemies. I wonder if we could call this network terrorism? Someone call ASScroft!

Is my childhood memory fading? I don't remember silly puddy as being "bouncy."

There is a huge market of devices that need low data rate and low power. Especially the area I am in: implantable medical devices.

So that is why I feel the urge to load Slashdot every 15 minutes! Come on, I KNOW I'm not the only one! ;)

"In 1991, GNU was mostly finished, lacking only a kernel."
ALMOST FINISHED? That's a laugh, it's STILL not finished. How in the world can he say it was almost finished in 1991?
